Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

New Binky the Doormat:

All The Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople
Today's I need to listen to more of them. I was familiar with Mott The Hopple, but since this is the 2nd sound that got my attention and wasn't already in my library I think they warrant a deeper dive. I suspect my never vetting Cream is mainly an Eric Clapton is a tool sorta thing, but I've never let douche bags get in the way of listening to their music.

higgins:

Secret World (from Secret World Live) - Peter Gabriel
Hov34:

Do I Wanna Know? – Arctic Monkeys
Today's so that's what those sounds are. Good ones at that.

Manster:

Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Today's winner. Great description of the song too. It resonated with me since I'm not a huge Radiohead fan, but love this song.

Ilov80s:

The Modern Leper - Frightened Rabbit
They got squeezed on my list, but I'm glad they made someone's cut.

Chaos34:

War Pigs - Black Sabbath
Today's 2nd best song and while I appreciate the music that it led to I just can't stand Ozzy. Never have.

Oliver Humanzee:

Rid Of Me – PJ Harvey
Banger - love PJ. In a list of favorites I could see convincing myself putting this above Paranoid Android. I can listen to this over and over again...and may have done just that last night.

Cream is as much about Jack Bruce, if not more, than Clapton, which to me is a good thing. Clearly Clayton’s guitar work is outstanding (as is Ginger Baker’s fierce drum work), but Clapton has a more secondary role on vocals. He’s better as a complementary piece, which is why I don’t like his solo stuff all that much.

My Idiots #23

Scooter

Lola – The Kinks

Doug
Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd

Jeb
The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys - Traffic

Chap
My Sweet Lord – George Harrison
Oh cool, Scorchy gets to hear My Sweet Lord for a SECOND time!

@zamboni No need to regret missing out on Low Spark. That one IS ineligible for our countdown due to Ric Grech, Jim Gordon and Rebop Kwakubaah.
Does no one read post #3?

Oh wait, I guess not.

I love the Derek and the Dominoes album and I think it helps that Bobby Whitlock was about as much of a creative force behind it as Clapton was.

My Sweet Lord

Is that the one they sing around the campfire in the movie Glory?

Edit: Nope. I do recognize it, but not by name. I just don't really have a thing for things Beatle.

Yes - my guys were not willing to deal with the level of minutia that we're doing here. They were more about the "spirit" of being British. For the most part it worked itself out.

I let a few things slide - but I actually did put my foot down this morning when Scooter tried to list a Derek and the Dominoes song in at #8.

Yeah, a band that's 3/4 or 4/5 American (depending on whether you consider Duane Allman a full-time member) is taking it too far.

I still think "where was the band based" would have been an easier way to determine eligibility, but luckily we have a lawyer running things who loves doing research. And doesn't sleep. ;)

Also, at least he didn't try to list Sixpence None the Richer.

I think I’ve learned from these two drafts that I strongly prefer British rock but overall American music fits my tastes more. The lack of Black artists really hurts the UK. There’s no Aretha, Marvin or Andre 3000.

Same for me about rock, although rock is my main listening genre so I'm fairly certain I will ultimately like the British list better than the American one.

All of the above, clearly, as we see in his solo work, which consists of roughly three-and-a-half good songs, one of which is a rip-off of Sunshine of Your Love.

I think if you took my total catalog/catalogue of favorites/favourites it'd skew about 50/50 in terms of U.S. versus Other regions.

But I think my top favorites/favourites skew Other.

Duran Duran wrote a pretty cool song around an extremely dumb title that's true to both the band's and the Bond sound.
A View to a Kill is my favorite Bond song, and I agree it is very true to the Bond sound. Shirley Bassey does my second favorite Bond song, but since she is Welsh I won't mention it since it may be on someone's list.

There’s a pretty good documentary named The Sound of 007 on Amazon.

Sorry about replying to myself but I went back and rewatched this last night - so freaking good if you are a Bond fan. Love it and highly recommend. There are also some cool musical composition parts in there for music geeks that you would probably enjoy even if you are not a Bond fan. Several artists from our countdown here that are prominently featured and interviewed.

Yeah, I can count on one finger the number Eric Clapton solo songs I like.

WE DID IT! Finally.

Two movie theme songs today and another version of a song recorded specifically for a movie. Hmmmm.

My special shout-out goes to simey's choice of "Linger" by the Cranberries. "Zombie" seems to be the song of choice around here, but "Linger" has always been my favorite. Also, Ilov80s chose one of my two favorite Kate Bush songs.

Not a lot of new-to-me listening today, but I'm excited to hear the few I don't know.

My top 10 from the 9 point round, excluding my own selection:
  1. Doug : Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
  2. @Yankee23Fan : Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
  3. Scooter : Lola – The Kinks
  4. @falguy : Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
  5. @Zegras11 : Pride (In The Name Of Love) (live in Tulsa) - U2
  6. @Mt. Man : Madness – Muse
  7. @DrIanMalcolm : Hysteria - Def Leppard
  8. @jwb : Cruel Summer - Bananarama
  9. @AAABatteries : Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
  10. @Mister CIA : Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Another awesome round!

I very strongly considered including Lloyd Cole in my top 36 (though I would have chosen a different song), but he was just edged out. Glad to see he made someone's list.

I love Zombie, Dreams and Linger equally. Just depends on my mood for the day. I had a a heck of a time picking one. Linger is a wonderful song. Dolores' voice was so unique and beautiful. :sadbanana:

I love the way she sings "You know I'm such a fool ferr you"

Almost too many to list but I'll do it anyway. Love the Dog Days and St. Elmo's picks. Nice to final see LZ even though we knew it was coming.

But I can't express how great Eephus' pick is - very jealous.

zamboni:

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (instrumental) – The Dream Academy
(new artist)

Morrissey minus Morrissey! Nice!
A little context for this pick. It's from the museum scene (filmed at the fantastic Art Institute of Chicago) in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Such a terrific, powerful scene juxtaposed in an otherwise fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. This scene showing the sadness/pain in Cameron's face resonated with me back when in high school - everyone wanted to be Ferris, but I could totally relate to Cameron. Not to mention it's a gorgeous song. I went with the instrumental, but Dream Academy also did a version with vocals. And as much as I like the Smiths, I think DA topped their original.

shuke:

There's No Way Out Of Here - David Gilmour
(duplicate – second vote)

This was definitely not on my list of songs I thought were going to get two votes (even one, to be honest). What a pleasant surprise.
scorchy:

The Concept - Teenage Fanclub
(new artist)

I wish I could have made room for them, especially since I didn't have any Scottish acts (unless you count Rod Stewart, who was born in London but is of Scottish descent.) This is their 1A or 1B for me depending on the day.
Sullie:

The Politics Of Dancing - Re-Flex
(new artist)

Long-ago memories of this from MTV occasionally surface in my mind -- it's got quite the memorable chorus.
Andy Dufresne:

Sanctify Yourself - Simple Minds
(new song)

My favorite of their hits.

Chaos34:

The Card Cheat - The Clash
(new song)

Deep cut I was not expecting to see.

Mrs. Eephus:

The Changingman - Paul Weller
(new artist)
Paul Weller
The Stanley Road album was massive in the UK, and this was one of its biggest hits there. Here, it was relegated to occasional play on "modern rock" stations.

The Politics Of Dancing - Re-Flex
(new artist)

Okay, I didn't include links, 100% my fault as I was in a hurry (as usual) and I wanted to apologize for not including the links. I didn't intend to be so lazy, I'm mostly forgetful. Anyway, I clicked on the link above and I was somewhat shocked and horrified to see that video, I've never seen that before. The video I was thinking of here which was the weird MTV video which I kind of remembered. And, I went back and watched that MTV video and upon further review it's 80's cheesy bad but not quite as boy band cringe worthy as the above but it just further cements my bizarre taste of weird music at times. I absolutely love so much weird 80's music, takes me back to my teenage years when all I could think about was how awesome life would be when I wasn't a teenager any more. :)

Pip’s Invitation:

Rolling In The Deep - Adele
(duplicate – second vote)

This was a massive hit all over the world and was overplayed to death everywhere. I don't care. It captivates me with every listen. The yearning in Adele's vocal gives me the feels.
I did not recognize the title, so I fired it up, and I've heard it inadvertently.....my wife likes Adele. I had no idea she was British.

Really good list of songs today.

I think I like Sanctify Yourself as much as Alive and Kicking, so I'm glad both are out there now.

I don't forget about many songs, but had forgotten about The Politics of Dancing. Kinda like that one.

Interestingly, the only song from Hysteria that hasn't been overplayed is...Hysteria. I like this version by Matt Nathanson.

The story behind Linger is something to the effect of Dolores met a guy on the dance floor of a club that snogged her to weakness in the knees. They didn't hook up but the next time she ran into him at the club, he didn't give her the time of day. She was asking him why he let the kiss linger like he did. After the song came out, she said he tried to contact her as he "knew the song was about him". She blew him off.
