Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Mrs. Eephus with a crucial and bold pick of "Autonomy" for her Buzzcocks song, assuming that's the only one she selects.

It's a great pick, IMO.

I love the track. It's an instant earworm just seeing it in print.

It's a thing that's worth having
Yes, I would
Buys you your life, sir
If it could
I, I want you
Autonomy
It leaves us all wondering
And it should
This awkward something
For the good

My memory is for Schmidt these days … but going by memory, is “Take Me Out” the runaway Ace right now?

Going by the Googlesheet, "Take Me Out" is indeed the leader in the Ace clubhouse right now.

EDIT: It looks like "There She Goes" was actually slightly in the Ace lead until yesterday' picks.

No, Mark Ronson is in the lead for the Ace Award.

I don't like it, either.
Well ... "Take Me Out" just made up more than half the lead that "Valerie" had over it.

Coming down to the wire? We shall see!

From The Beginning – Emerson, Lake & Palmer
(new artist)
This was the band I was talking about as to being surprised we hadn’t seen anything by them yet.
Coulda sworn they were taken at least once, but no. I guess some of the talk about Greg Lake played tricks on my memory.
I sideswiped them by drafting very early King Crimson awhile back (also selected by Pip yesterday), but ELP I guess slipped through so far.

Don Quixote:

I Can’t Control Myself - The Troggs
(new artist)

I’m surprised that my pick here is the first Troggs song to show up. “From Nowhere” is one of my favorite 60s albums; their other albums a bit more uneven, but still lots of songs that I like on those.

I think The Troggs get written off as not much more than Wild Thing and Love is All Around, but I prefer this song (and some other Troggs songs) to those two. I don’t think it did as well commercially because it got banned from the BBC and other radio stations because lyrics like “Your slacks are low, and your hips are showing” were way too scandalous (think of the children). In addition to the great lyrics, it’s also got a propulsive beat to it that keeps it going.

The song was also influential to a lot of punk bands, with covers by The Ramones and The Buzzcocks, for example.

Train In Vain (Stand By Me) - The Clash
(duplicate – third vote)
I must have missed this the first two times through because I AAA Batteried it on today's spin. I know this song...but from where. Per usual thank you Silicon Valley for the quick reply - NCAA Football 2006. For 3 minutes I was back in various college houses playing round robin tournaments at all hours of a weekday night because I was smart enough to not schedule any classes before 11. Ahh, when time's were simpler...

Spreadsheet now current as of today's selections. Interesting that the Beatles are now leading the artist category with only 1 song in the top 20 (and it's at #20). Getting contributions from all over the place.

I'm also surprised (but happy) to see zombie continues to hang around at the top of the song leader board. For now, at least. Lots of points to come to shake things up.

Shine A Light - The Rolling Stones
(new song)

So Pip, when seeing my list, noted that I had opted for two of the more ragged Stones tunes, both of them off the glorious "Exile on Main St," (the other was "All Down the Line,") and I could have easily chosen two other picks or what-have-you from this one. This one is one of the more soulful numbers on this particular album or in their entire discography, with that great church-style organ that comes in a few seconds after Mick's first couple of lines of the song. On another day, would I have made this my top Stones tune (spoiler - last one I picked)? Probably not. I was just feelin' it, y'know?

But I tended to always sorta prefer the more ragged Stones than anything else - I tend to think the last four tracks on this album are the best ones, even with Happy, Sweet Virginia, Tumblin' Dice and Rocks Off being the more well-known songs. But anytime they threw in the organ and the great piano in the mix it just sings. It's a bit sloppy in the middle, purposefully, of course, but then it just builds to that great crescendo with the backup singers coming in, and the guitar and the piano and organ all dueling at once as they jam. Boy, it's just fantastic.

This one's masterful, and really in keeping with what I think of as the greatness of the Stones.

Job news! Today I accepted an offer for...well, my existing job. I just remembered that, in this department of the company that will now officially be my employer, new hires choose a "superhero" to represent them. Is anyone confused about why I got out of the corporate world? Anyway, there will be an announcement of my coming on board that gives a bio, then three "fun facts" about me, and an indication of who my superhero will be.

Taking nominations for superheroes. I suppose for fun facts, too - I guess the Beatles stuff will be one. "Runs countdowns of favorite songs of internet middle-aged dummies" won't be. ;)
Congrats! And I know you have sort of settled on Rocket but I think Squirrel Girl is pretty awesome as well. I think the expert communicator fits very well.

Squirrel Powers: Squirrel Girl is a mutate with several traits that are similar to or usually associated with squirrels. Squirrel Girl possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and reflexes.[39] She possesses the proportional abilities of a squirrel scaled up to human size.[40]

Abilities

  • Computer Science Expert: Doreen is an expert in computer science.[40]
  • Expert Communicator: Doreen has "defeated" multiple foes through speechcraft alone, from Hippo to Galactus. During her time as an incidental ambassador between the 76 Worlds Alliance, Squirrel Girl assisted in negotiating and resolving grievances of 70 worlds. This was likely done with visual aids produced by Silver Surfer.[42]
  • Medium Awareness: Squirrel Girl has routinely broken the fourth wall and directly addressed the audience.[

This one is already taken, too.

Nice to see David Essex make an appearance. "Rock On" is such a wonderful and strange sounding record. Hard to believe in retrospect that it was such a huge global hit.
I first heard the Michael Damien version of Rock On that was a hit in the '80s. Later when I heard the Essex version, I remember thinking how weird it sounded.

Been awhile since I commented here. It's been a heckofa week, longer. I have been visiting the thread. Way behind on playlists but they're forever, right?

Rock On

I like to think this song spawned the expression rock on. I can't argue that it isn't strange sounding but at the same time I find it very cool. That prominent bass on delay, so good. In 74 my prize possession was a $10 set of Koss headphones. The house would get quiet at night, and I'd dial in KLOS. Hey, did ya rock and roll? Yeah, I did. In the midst of all the heavy rock, this song was soothing for me. Oooh my soul. It was different from everything they played but fit right in. A needed break.

Essex wrote the song on his bass for the movie That'll Be The Day starring him and Ringo. Keith Moon had a minor role. It's worth a watch. In the studio the bass work was done by Herbie Flowers, a heavily used studio musician who toured with T. Rex. In the studio he plays on three Elton albums, three George's, two Bowie's, one Ringo, a Roger Daltry, a Cat Stevens, a Bryan Ferry, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton-John; and more, including his most famous bassline on Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side. Reading about him caused me to re-watch The Wrecking Crew last night and listen to his 2012 jazz album.

Rock on.

Oh, just be Harley Quinn like you always were going to be and get it over with. ;)

In all seriousness, were Blossom or Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls taken? Would that count?

I don't see Harley Quinn on the list, so I guess she's available. I'll have to read about her. Superheroes are not my forte.

Looks like Buttercup is taken, but Blossom is available due to a recent departure from the company. Maybe I could figure out a way to get the "Rocket Raccoon" or "Squirrel Girl" people fired.

Magneto for Magneto and Titanium Man?

Pip’s Invitation:

Baby Blue -- Badfinger
(duplicate – fourth vote)

Another perfect power pop song. The guitar lines have a "winding effect" to them that propels the song in a different way than some of the other touchstone songs of the genre. Even though this was a hit, for whatever reason, by the time I started listening in the '80s, the FM stations in Philly were playing No Matter What, Day After Day and Come and Get It, but not this. So I hadn't heard it a whole lot when it was used in the final scene of Breaking Bad, one of the best song/TV scene combos ever devised. "Guess I got what I deserved," indeed.

Bonus points for being produced by Todd Rundgren, which inspired this hilarious story told by Rick Springfield at his 2016-2017 shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esbUBOcNnk0

Magneto for Magneto and Titanium Man?

I did look him up. Started as an anti-hero but became a hero...he's a possibility. Feels a little odd for me to choose a Holocaust survivor, but the whole thing is odd.

What's the game again? What type of hero are you looking for. I have a few suggestions based off my comic collection days (late 80's).

It's sooooo dumb. I'll find the original post about this and bump it.

@Andy Dufresne

Most people seem to select based on particular skills or powers that the superhero might have, or based on cultural connections (like a Black person taking a Black superhero). I don't care about any of that so much, but just want a cool superhero. Don't care if it's male or female, but if female I'd prefer not one of the ones that's all boobs.

My selection of Into the Void is from the album Master of Reality, which has become my favorite Sabbath album over time. I won't say too much about the other tracks in case someone else has selected them. Into the Void is iommi at his best.....heavy as a planet.....thick, and sludgy. The rythm section of Ward, and Butler is perfection. I like Ozzys vocals as well. Some people don't, but his voice is perfect for Sabbath....there's a song on Reality where Ozzy's voice is actually kinda beautiful.

Bringin the riffage today!
@New Binky the Doormat Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!! Such a great track.

@Mrs. Rannous .....I think I got the correct Rannous? Another vote for War Pigs......it never gets old.

@Sullie Glad to see The Nile Song. Always been a favorite of mine. Rockin Floyd for sure.

@KarmaPolice The first lines in the Trooper always get me. Nice selection.

You'll take my life, but I'll take yours too!
You'll fire your musket, but I'll run you through!

The Nile Song - Pink Floyd
(new song)

This is one of the most WTF moments you'll ever come across when listening to an album in its entirety. Most of the More soundtrack is mellow, atmospheric stuff, and then there's this and Ibiza Bar, which are the loudest and hardest-rocking songs Floyd ever recorded. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know if this was on purpose. But those two songs really stick out. Not surprisingly, both have been covered by alternative and grunge bands.

higgins:

From The Beginning – Emerson, Lake & Palmer
(new artist)

Keith Emerson is generally too much for me, but his synth solo caps this song off quite gracefully.

Mt. Man:

Hold On Tight - Electric Light Orchestra
(new song)

Here is where ELO stopped trying to replicate the Beatles. Time is a synth-heavy concept album, and I don't think most of its songs have aged well. But this one is, er, timeless. (I believe it was added at the last minute because the record company didn't see much commercial appeal in the other songs.)
Ilov80s:

Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
(duplicate – sixth vote)

Val Rannous:

War Pigs - Black Sabbath
(duplicate – sixth vote)

Hey, it's the male-vocal equivalents of Valerie and Son of a Preacher Man...

krista4:

Rocket Man – Elton John
(new song)

The mondegreens on this one are extensive.

That last line definitely rules out Power Girl, lol

Can't remember if it was in a book or from an interview but when first presented with Into the Void Ozzy said there is no F'n way I'm singing that.
