Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (21 Viewers)

Actually with this group I could see Bowie over both of those. I could also see Radiohead up there as well.

I like the idea of the contest being list who you think will come in spots 6-10 on the countdown.

I like it, except I’d go #4 through whatever (10?). Despite some of you weirdos, I fully expect the Big Three to be the big three. After that it’s anyone’s game. Floyd, Who, U2, Morrison, Radiohead, and others seem like they’d have a good shot.

I haven't paid attention at all to the lists so far, other than vetting eligibility and logging the first two lists, so I'm basing this only on my impressions pre-countdown. I'd think Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Rolling Stones in that order for the first three consensus overall. I could turn out to be wrong! Maybe I should enter the contests.

Jim Morrison was British? ;)

I like this idea, since last night people's guesses were already different as we got to 5-6 anyay. IMO one of the contests should be guess the bands in order who show up as #4-#10. I think it should go that many for tie breakers, and I think there could also be a surprise or two in the top 10 that might make us want those 8, 9, 10 guesses in the mix.

Another fun one, since we seemed to decide that Stones, Beatles, and LZ are the locks to be at the top. Maybe a contest to name what we think the top song from each of them will be?

If I had to guess - since we're discussing so openly - we're looking at an order like this: Beatles, Zeppelin, the Stones, U2, Bowie, Elton John, the Who, Floyd, Radiohead, and then it's anyone's guess, but I'm thinking Dire Straits has a couple of perfect ones that may hit a lot of lists. Not sure where this group falls with the likes of the Cure.

I won't have the 17/13 male-to-female split like I did with the last list, but I know I'll have several.

I most definitely have paid no attention to her career. As you might recall, I'm not really into female singers (other than Aimee Mann). Couldn't name a single one of her songs. But just lumped her incorrectly with a bunch of other female singers!

My list will almost certainly have fewer women than the American one. The ineligibility of Sade and Joan Armatrading removes two sure things.
My Brit list has more women than my American one, mainly because it would be very difficult to have less.

The Kinks should be around there too.

I could have just come out and said it too. I assumed this was one that rock was talking about.

Mine is the opposite - where my US list had several solo females and others in bands, my UK list has scant few so far.

On that note Kiki Dee (when the song/album is credited to the Kiki Dee Band) = ineligible. She's ok without her named band.

Funny, in the American list the top was dominated by solo artists. Here, according to most of the discussion so far, we seemingly have no solo guys in contention for the top 5 even.

Who is the top solo artist? That might be a good contest.

Off hand I'd say Elton but I don't have a good feel for what people enjoy so maybe he's the EU's Eagles to many

On one hand I'm betting it's more Billy Joel than Eagles, but on the other hand is that because of my perception of the 3?

Leo Sayer down?

I fully expect the Big Three
I honestly am not sure who the 3rd is? I could make a case for Zeppelin, U2, Floyd or even the Who - assuming Beatles and Stones as Top 2.
I was thinking Beatles/Stones/Zep, as we also had separate countdowns for each, but could be wrong.

To me that's the big 3 as well. All 3 represent a cornerstone of the classic rock era. You could argue that for Floyd as well, unless you think they suck, which I do.

Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms being ineligible will hurt them a little.

The first few albums have enough classics that should get them in, but perhaps not a top 10 group.

Elton John, I think, will be all over this list - but given my list and Pip's (got a sneak preview), I do wonder if he's the rare instance in which one particular song may outcrowd all the others, whereas I can see the Beatles with any one of 20 songs easily.

I agree for many of the big artists, it’s hard to single out one song, and thus they may not appear in my 31.

Shoot -- I'm having this problem for some not-very-big-at-all artists.

I'm guessing this one will have a lot more concentration in terms of artists, but more variety in # of songs from those artists.

For solo artists, they are the only one who matters, even if they have guest artists on a song in question,

I want to triple check here so I don't get publicly raked over the coals.
Are you saying that any Ozzy Osbourne album is eligible if it's just "Ozzy Osbourne"? Regardless of who was in his band?

You betcha. Anything that is credited to his long solo career is good. Thanks for confirming.
 I considered his solo career wholly ineligible because the band wasn't a touring band or session musicians. My list now has to be re-evaluated. ****.

Yeah, well, it's a shot in the dark. One step away from you.

wait... why is Whitesnake in 1987 not eligible?

American drummers from 1987 to present

ETA: I almost pulled a muscle trying not to be all snarky
Whitesnake (the album) was released in 1987 and should be 100% eligible. All UK-based musicians. Aynsley Dunbar was born in the UK. As of 1989 and the Slip of the Tongue Album, there were 4 non-UK born musicians and that begins the ineligible time period.

Have some time to work on my list today finally.

Would save me (and maybe others?) if someone could tell me which albums are OK/Not OK for Yes and The Cure. TIA

For Yes:

Relayer (1974), 90125 (1983), Big Generator (1987), Union (1991), and Talk (1994) are ineligible. I know that after Talk, Trevor Rabin left the group and the next albums (1997's Keys to Ascension and Keys to Ascension 2) are eligible. After that, you're on your own.

I'm glad we're not talking about Charley Charles anymore. I apologize for causing that ruckus.

My list in this event will be much chalkier than the American list. Basically, all of the artists mentioned in the lists of most likely are represented on my list. Maybe not all the songs will be chalky, but the artists will be.

Thanks. I dropped in for some camaraderie and diversion. I doubt I made more than 30-40 posts this year and I'm tired tired of spending way too much time on stressful things..This format sounds fun.
Its not at all what I expected when I joined, assuming it was my mental image of a FFA draft. I'm just not used to hardly coming to the FFA anymore and keeping up on anything. I think it might enhance my life if I started hanging out again. Still lots of good people still hang around.
I imagine I can find what I need to know in the first few pages to get his done in a day or two, if that's not too late.
Lots of you have my phone, so feel free to text or call (lol) if I need shepherding herding..
Yeah we would love to have you join. The last one was a ton of fun and a nice non-stressful format (at least for those not running the show) and there was a ton of good music selected.

I'm sure this has been talked about already, but what's be best way to vet a band? Is there a good site for this? I've just been going to bands' official website and can find most of what I'm looking for, but not always

Always thought of Pink Floyd as kind of a niche band loved by the stoners I knew.
Do you not like any Floyd? or you just saying you wouldn't have expected it that high in the countdown because of that?

Neither, really. I was making a generalized statement that I don't entirely believe just to stir controversy. I do associate Floyd with stoners as the people I know who like them all are, including a boyfriend 20 years ago who was a complete stoner and loved them, but I know that they have mainstream popularity, too. I neither love nor hate their music personally.

Bump for those who weren't sure of the three artists I was referring to.

For Yes, all the good albums are eligible.
That narrows it down a lot.

I believe he'll have a pretty good spread, too.

Me, too. I've no idea what the "one particular song" would be.

I'll see if I'm right. I'll restate to say that of the ones that seem to be the consensus top picks (Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, Bowie, U2, Elton John), he's the one i can see with one song that sits above the rest of his catalog.

I think one of our charity polls should be a guess on how many different Beatles/Stones/Zeppelin songs there will be.
