Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Three more lists in so far today, two of which have been vetted and are complete. REMINDER: Post #3 is there for your convenience. While it's not exhaustive, it covers most of the less-obscure artists about which you might have questions. Several people have contributed a lot of thoughtful input into the list. Take advantage of that!

See, this is what I don't get. Why do we need a ruling on Fatboy Slim?

In what world could Fatboy Slim make the top 31 British songs ever? I can understand liking him personally but...

It is liking him personally though. It's 31 favorite songs, not top 31 ever. Feel free to cut out the classics (or bands/artists) you think "should" be there.

ETA - for me, it's also going to be a more "here's what I'd like on the playlist today". This means some beloved classics that maybe I heard one too many times may not make it, replaced by a <much lesser artist> song. I did that a little in the US one but I'm doing it more here.

that's where I'm at jwb, I have bands I like more that didn't make the list, but I really liked a particular song.

and yeah, only 31 songs make it tough

NOTE: I messed up and forgot an important band/artist, but I'll hang with the omission. I don't want to remove anything I have - lol!

I've collated data from three lists (it's taking forever for each one right now), and there are two songs that are on all three. For some reason, I'm really surprised by that.
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer?

Only one vote!

I just scanned the 11 I have vetted. One of the two songs shows up four times total and the other five times. That one with five votes might be an early leader.

Always lots of pages to keep up with! Often fun reading when I get home.

For a point of data (mmm, data) on my tastes, let's take this list of Pretty Big Nine {tm}
Beatles, Zeppelin, the Stones, U2, Bowie, Elton John, the Who, Floyd, Radiohead
4 Definitely on my list. Possibly all Top 10, but I haven't nailed down over half my list let alone firmly ranked anything. So grain of salt and all that.
2 Probably on my list. Still debating on which song for those two, which could lead to a lower ranking. See also previous caveat.
3 Definite maybes. I think 1 will make top 36 and 2 won't, but that's 100% TBD.

That's just me though. About 10 songs firm, a dozen artists likely in, and far too many others on a "short" list before I start digging for possible hidden gems. Fortunately I have over 3 weeks to figure out as much of that as I can.

One of the bigger surprises for me as I am going through and listening for research is how meh I've been going through Led Zeppelin's songs, and how high an artist that I didn't really listen to at all until last year is climbing higher and higher and I'm having trouble picking a song.

I need to submit this thing soon so I can stop obsessing. Like others, I am afraid of the Krista wrath and 0 chance I make a change after pressing send. ;)

I allowed everyone to change to their hearts' content last time. I might have made voodoo dolls of a couple of people due to the number of changes, but I will accept them if anyone has "buyer's remorse"! The way I'm keeping the data this time should make it easier for me to process later changes.

11 different #1 songs from nine different artists.
Sounds a lot like last time...

Yeah, it was like that for a while last time, though near the end "Like a Rolling Stone" came out of nowhere to snag a couple of firsts. The first one to hit two #1s in that exercise was "Whipping Post."

I have 13 lists now and see we still don't have a duplicate at #1. :)

ANNOUNCE: I have a new favorite poster, who is the one who just sent me a list for which they answered my "three questions" in advance! It's the first time that has happened.

As a reminder, if you send a list, I will automatically send you a response along the lines of the following (if any of the questions have obviously been answered in your list, I'll note that as well):

"Before I vet (which I still will do), I'm asking everyone to attest to this first:

1. Have you or anyone you know checked your list against the ineligibles and partial ineligibles listed in post #3 PLUS checked any other bands not listed there? If not, please do so before returning to this PM.
If yes to #1:
2. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure it is in song title then artist name format?
If yes to #2:
3. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure that your your favorite of the 31 songs is at the top of your list, and the songs are in descending order of preference from there?"

It's not required, but if you wish to save a step, you can answer these questions when you send the list. :)

hey great job ...bud!!

Just to show that OH doesn't know all he thinks he does.

Me: I'm surprised so many people are choosing Yes songs.
OH: People love Yes, man.
Me: I'm not sure I could name a Yes song. Do I know any Yes songs?
OH: Yeah, "25 or 6 to 4"
Me: :lmao: That's Chicago!
OH: [doesn't believe me, googles it]
OH: I meant "[spoiler song name redacted that sounds nothing at all like that Chicago song]"

The one he named second is a song I knew. I had forgotten about it. (I don't like it.)

Now this is ****ing weird... Right after I posted that, I turned on the TV to watch the end of Jeopardy. One of the answers had "25 or 6 to 4" in it, but before that, two of the answers were other songs (eligible for this countdown) that we had named in the last hour or so. I mean, we hadn't been talking about songs much at all, so it was reallllllly freaky. I understand my phone and computer listen to me, but Jeopardy was, presumably, not. Spooky!

This is clearly not his lane. It's like asking me to discuss Norwegian hip-hop.

Have some time to work on my list today finally.

Would save me (and maybe others?) if someone could tell me which albums are OK/Not OK for Yes and The Cure. TIA

For Yes, all the good albums are eligible.
You don’t like Relayer? It’s the favorite Yes album of a LOT of Phish fans I know.

I was half joking. I do like all the preceding albums better.

Wow, Phish fans like an album with only 3 songs?

heh, yea now let's hope I didn't miss anything. I thought I vetted my US list too and I got a demerit.

No, you're good. And as I've told a few people, it's not getting something wrong or missing an ineligible that's an issue. Not a problem at all! It's not even putting in any effort and expecting someone else to do it for you that irritates me greatly.

was there a "tooth" involved???

hmm? Hmmmm??

Also, why aren't you submitting a list? We miss you. Or at least I do.
Aw shucks. Work has been a beast of burden lately. But I'm off next week and I'm pretty good at submitting lists. Accepting tl;dr pointers for creating my list.
Read post #1 and post #3 on the first page of this thread. Commit them to memory. Then make your list and send it to Krista. If you do that, you should be good to go.
