My Idiots #6

Scooter
Eminence Front – The Who
The one song from It's Hard that fits in with The Who's prior sound. It's also one of their best tracks regardless of era.
Maybe from a lyrical perspective, but this sounds way more New Wave-y & less bombastic than their previous muscle-rock to me ("Who Are You" may as well have come from a different band). Might be because of Pete's singing, but even the arrangement sounds more contemporary. It's also early-80s funky as hell.

To me it sounds like an update for the early '80s of the big songs from Who's Next.

We have to take as a given that anything without Keith Moon on drums is going to sound appreciably different from anything with Keith Moon on drums, because no one else played like him.

Pip’s Invitation:

Firth Of Fifth - Genesis
(new song)

I don't think I can give a better take on this than I did when I took it in the This Is Their Best Song draft.

Round 6:

Firth of Fifth -- Genesis

This was one of the major "classic rock" bands that I was surprised was still on the board, though they are not for everyone. I am going with this now because they -- and this very song -- have a chance of being sniped by Yo Mama.

Like Fleetwood Mac, Genesis is really several bands in one. They changed drastically not only from beginning to end, but with almost every album. Early Gabriel and late Gabriel bear little resemblance to each other, as do early early Collins and late early Collins and early late Collins and late late Collins (I'm gonna block out the stuff they did with that other singer.) The constant was their striving to make major musical statements. Even the poppiest Collins-fronted albums have material of stunning sweep. Gluing it all together was Tony Banks, who IMO is one of the greatest keyboardists in rock history.

Selling England by the Pound, their penultimate album with Gabriel, is the quintessential Genesis work IMO. Here, the ambition of their earliest work remains, but the production quality was significantly better and the band tried more complex arrangements and long instrumental passages than before. If someone who knew nothing about prog asked what it sounds like, as good as response as any would be to play them the best songs from this album.

To me, its greatest track, and the greatest track of their entire career, is Firth of Fifth. Banks' performance on piano and organ and Steve Hackett's on guitar are breathtaking. It's got all kinds of crazy time signatures going on, but never devolves into wankery for its own sake. This is what I turn to when I want to hear experimental music that's easy on the ears.

I hear ya, and you have a better ear for these things than I do. Sounds more like one of Pete's solo records to me.

It wouldn't have been out of place on Empty Glass or All the Best Cowboys... But I think it makes sense as a Who song as well.

Yeah, thank you. I knew this going in. I tried to pick "20th Century Boy" for the playlist as a substitute, but it got too confusing to explain what I was trying to do and I just wanted to make everything easier on the people doing the actual work for this thing, so the live version it is. "Cadillac" was definitely the song I was looking for, and I posted links to two different (and better) versions online for anybody interested. Just be forewarned that the mix isn't going to sound that great around song number twenty-nine and duly note my apologies for that.

Will you use this for The Cure's Charlotte Sometimes? I have no idea who that is that you have on the playlist. Thanks.
Done. Not sure why that happened...I've noticed that if I type out the whole song title it takes a second or two and the song list changes order, went to click the right song and it re-ordered right before I clicked. The desktop app isn't as nice as the mobile version.

Weird Spotify things happen to me all the time. I looked at the playlist, and I noticed that Charlotte Sometimes was by some band called The Cure is Us. I thought WTH is that? I clicked on it, and it was not a good experience. Have you made a playlist yet where you put a song from an album on the list, and then all of a sudden that whole album is on the playlist, and sometimes more than once? That happened to me sometimes when doing a Genrepalooza playlist. Anyway, thanks for correcting it.

The 6s playlist

Note no studio version of Cadillac by T-Rex so I picked one of the live versions and zero version of You Can Leave Your Hat On by Tom Jones or Leave Your Hat on :kicksrock:
There is a Joe Cocker cover of You Can Leave Your Hat On, but I assume Krista would prefer it not appear on the playlist.
It’s a Randy Newman song. Also why the hate for Joe Cocker? I love Joe Cocker.
That's a question for Krista.

I picked Helter Skelter as my representative song from the Beatles today because I figured it would get overlooked, I like the song and I was watching this interview of Sir Paul. In the interview he mentions it's been said to be the pre-cursor to heavy metal and the genesis for the song came from an interview he read about The Who. In the interview he read The Who had recorded a track where Pete Townshend said ". . . we just made the dirtiest, loudest, filthiest song evAr. . ." So, Paul reads that and he said "so I was kinda jealous, I didn't hear the song, still don't know which it is but after he read that, he goes into the studio and he said "guys, we've got to a do a song that's dirtier, filthier and louder than The Who!" And I have to tell you, I absolutely LOVE that, that is awesome to me that a guy from the biggest, most popular band on the planet could STILL get fired up by another band's song. Love it!

"Lay Me Down" by the Frames was absolutely lovely. The harmony vocals couldn't have been simpler, the two singers mostly kept the same intervals throughout, but the effect was breathtaking as was the coda by the string section.

Lay Me Down -- The Frames (Krista4). Lovely. This may only make sense in my head, but it reminds me of some of the White Album acoustic ballads.

It makes me so happy to read these. And I kinda get what you're saying, Pip.

I'm just now catching up on yesterday's posts and also listening to yesterday's playlist. The cats are very angry that there wasn't a warning about the beginning of "Plug In Baby." I'm almost all the way through the song and they're still looking pissed.

That's a cool story! I didn't know that.....I wish The Beatles would've made more heavy stuff!

Actually the Crue version is pretty good too ...

Looking at the spreadsheet, I noticed there is an artist listed as Ozzy Osbourne and an artist listed as Ozzy Osborne (with 19 points, so probably just one selection misspelled). That should be an easy fix, but I didn't know if anyone was aware.

Also, Dire Straits is in 41st place among artists, which is shockingly low to me. They are behind Duran Duran. Also, John Lennon is very low, although I could see him getting multiple high picks from one song in the next few rounds.

I'm surprised by how high ELO, Peter Gabriel and Def Leppard are in the rankings.

Zombie - The Cranberries
(duplicate – eighth vote)
I thought this song might be one of the few I had that was not selected by any others. Certainly not 7. What do I know. Happy to see this song, and the group in general, get lots of love. I had about 5 Cranberries songs that I was choosing from but settled on this one over Linger in the end. Both are fantastic, IMO.

Thanks. I'll correct that now. I've noticed a few similar instances and made corrections but had not seen this one.

Edit; Ironically it was me who misspelled it! :excited:

You all really love that Amy Winehouse, don't you?

I know where I got crossed up not realizing "Valerie" was going to be the Ace:

It's because it's going to be Marc Ronson's Ace award ... for an 'Amy Winehouse' song.
Yeah, it should have clicked for a guess as I was looking for songs of his and only Valerie kept popping up as an option. I wasn't thinking it through, I guess.

I'm not a massive cranberries fan, but this one, and Linger were huge on the radio when I was in high school. Love both songs. Went with Zombie because I think it's unique, and it rocks.

A lot of Dire Straits' catalog was ineligible, which I think accounts for their ranking.

I was surprised at how well ELO was doing as I took in the lists, but even more surprised about Def Leppard. One of the questions on the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111 was going to be about Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, but I subbed in Def Leppard when it became clear that they were killing Judas Priest in the rankings.

I completely forgot that much of the Dire Straits stuff was ineligible. Makes more sense now.

Three songs from yesterday made my new-to-me playlist: "Remember You" by The Zombies (which wasn't new to me but I had forgotten entirely), "Master of the Universe" by Hawkwind, and "Down with the Trumpets" by Rizzle Kicks. That's a diverse group of three. I have no idea what I was listening to with Hawkwind, but I liked it, whatever it was.

I also really liked "Jeepster" by T. Rex and "The Seeker" by The Who.

I went on a couple dates with this lady about 15-20 years ago. Things were going pretty well and she invited me over to her good friend's house for dinner. They were this older, hip couple. At some point early in the evening the host asked if we wanted to listen to some music and I said sure, whatever. He said, how about The Stone Roses and I replied that I didn't really know much about them. Total blind spot for me at the time. He acted surprised and said something hyperbolic like they were the best thing since The Beatles. Sure, buddy. He put it on and I thought, hey this is pretty good. Six or seven songs in I "woke up" and realized that I had been totally spaced out just completely lost in the album. I was giving autopilot "yeahs" and "uh-huhs" but had no idea what anyone had been talking about. Got awkward/weird and couldn't get out of my head and it turned out to be a bummer of a night. I think maybe we went out once or twice after that, but the damage had been done. Still an overall win: I got The Stone Roses out of it.

My favorite of theirs has changed over the years; I Am The Resurrection is in the lead at the moment. That chorus absolutely soars. I used to not really be into the jammy part at the end, but now I love it and look forward to it. So good.

Did he follow it up with Second Coming?

That’s a great story. I also had a tough time picking my one favorite song from that album.

The hell with that. I loooaaathe Joe Cocker. Maybe more than Krista. Randy Newman can stand in if necessary. The song is on the soundtrack for The Full Monty.

Live version here.

Joe Cocker is about as sexy as mouldy bread.

Feel free to throw panties and Y-fronts now.

I was happy to see it again. The Stone Roses are still a blindspot for me but I will rectify that. This is pretty easily my favorite new to me song. That chorus is great but as Eeph and I noted after he took it... those drums tho. Whew, I seek out awesome-to-me groovin' rhythmy percussions and bass. Prolly because tinnitus and losing higher register audio are an unfortunate reality. Great song.

I, for one, love love love today's list.

Also, I thought Madman Across The Water had already made a list??
