Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

I have no idea what I was listening to with Hawkwind, but I liked it, whatever it was.
I like this comment from the youtube video:

In 1972 I took my new and very beautiful 16 year old girlfriend to a Hawkwind gig in Brighton. She turned up in a perfect clean light blue dress, looking like a blonde angel. The gig was full of long haired tripping scruffy hippies, choking joss stick and hash smoke. There was a naked woman throwing herself around on stage and this earsplitting noise, well you couldnt call it music. She made me leave after 15 minutes and take her home. Never saw her again but I have seen Hawkwind many times since.

I went on a couple dates with this lady about 15-20 years ago. Things were going pretty well and she invited me over to her good friend's house for dinner. They were this older, hip couple. At some point early in the evening the host asked if we wanted to listen to some music and I said sure, whatever. He said, how about The Stone Roses and I replied that I didn't really know much about them. Total blind spot for me at the time. He acted surprised and said something hyperbolic like they were the best thing since The Beatles. Sure, buddy. He put in on and I thought, hey this is pretty good. Six or seven songs in I "woke up" and realized that I had been totally spaced out just completely lost in the album. I was giving autopilot "yeahs" and "uh-huhs" but had no idea what anyone had been talking about. Got awkward/weird and couldn't get out of my head and it turned out to be a bummer of a night. I think maybe we went out once or twice after that, but the damage had been done. Still an overall win: I got The Stone Roses out of it.

My favorite of theirs has changed over the years; I Am The Resurrection is in the lead at the moment. That chorus absolutely soars. I used to not really be into the jammy part at the end, but now I love it and look forward to it. So good.
Did he follow it up with Second Coming?

That’s a great story. I also had a tough time picking my one favorite song from that album.
Can't say I recall, I did my best to pay less attention the music the rest of the night, haha.

Yeah, it's such a great record. Way, way up there for me.

I like them all, but a few new song favorites (as in not repeats) from playlist 6 are:

The Village Green Preservation Society
Half A Person
Driver's Seat
Cadillac - basing this on the studio version yeah wooo
Helter Skelter
Madman Across the Water

Two new to me favorites that I dig:

Still Got the Blues
Delicate

I was happy to see it again. The Stone Roses are still a blindspot for me but I will rectify that. This is pretty easily my favorite new to me song. That chorus is great but as Eeph and I noted after he took it... those drums tho. Whew, I seek out awesome-to-me groovin' rhythmy percussions and bass. Prolly because tinnitus and losing higher register audio are an unfortunate reality. Great song.

I, for one, love love love today's list.

Also, I thought Madman Across The Water had already made a list??
Yeah, the rhythm section is fantastic. Tight but not stiff. They really shine on this one.

Looking at the spreadsheet, I noticed there is an artist listed as Ozzy Osbourne and an artist listed as Ozzy Osborne (with 19 points, so probably just one selection misspelled). That should be an easy fix, but I didn't know if anyone was aware.

Also, Dire Straits is in 41st place among artists, which is shockingly low to me. They are behind Duran Duran. Also, John Lennon is very low, although I could see him getting multiple high picks from one song in the next few rounds.

I'm surprised by how high ELO, Peter Gabriel and Def Leppard are in the rankings.

A lot of Dire Straits' catalog was ineligible, which I think accounts for their ranking.

I was surprised at how well ELO was doing as I took in the lists, but even more surprised about Def Leppard. One of the questions on the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111 was going to be about Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, but I subbed in Def Leppard when it became clear that they were killing Judas Priest in the rankings.
So you can say that Judas Priest had another thing coming?

I own the song I chose today, "Delicate" by Damien Rice, because, for the second day in a row, I chose an artist that no one else selected. :kicksrock: This is the last song I'll own, though.

Didn't put The Frames and Damien Rice together on purpose, but I'll state for the record that it is still one of my life goals to go to Dublin on Christmas Eve to seeing Glen Hansard and Damien Rice busking together. They did this for many years, and I don't even know if they still do, but I'm not going to check because I still want to think it's possible that I'll be there for it one of these years.

Choosing one Damien Rice song was as difficult for me as for any other artist. His vocal is, to me, one of the best out there these days, and most other days, and his phrasing just kills. Together as a package I find his performances breath-taking. The build is many of his songs, including "Delicate," is incredible, too.

Like The Frames, I find it tragic that he isn't more well known in the US, though part of that might be his own doing as he took a very long break between his second and third albums due to having gone insane after a breakup with his partner Lisa Hannigan. The only song I recall getting any play here at all, and another I had under serious consideration, was "The Blower's Daughter," which was in the Mike Nichols movie Closer. Another of my favorites is "9 Crimes," heavily featuring Ms. Hannigan, and which I probably should have taken in order to increase the female representation on my list.

One of Doc Oc's idiot friends took it for their exercise.

As far as the Stone Roses, they only have two albums so there's not much "research" to do. The first is great all the way through and the second is not as consistent but has a lot of high points (warning: the first song is 11 minutes long and starts with about 4 minutes of sound effects. I think it's great but others may not.) There are a few non-album singles and B-sides but otherwise that's it.

Did the cats like it?

They didn't seem to mind this one! I'm not sure they've recovered from the intro to that Muse song, though. Probably PMing simey to see if they can come live with her.
They did PM and asked what type of music is played at my household, and I told them, and I haven't heard back from them since.
Updating notebook: Krista's cats don't like Sturgill Simpson.

The Village Green Preservation Society

Considering you got me into Muswell Hillbillies, I have a hard time imagining this is new to you. Am I mistaken or were you just saying "new song favorites" and then proceeding to list old ones?
They are songs that haven't been repeats. They aren't new to me. The new to me songs are the songs that I said are "new to me favorites." 😵‍💫 It's definitely confusing how I wrote it. *I fixed it, but it still sounds a bit off.

Well, I didn't know he qualified. Not that I would have chosen a song top 31, but I do like his music. Maybe my favorite part of my daughter's musical journey was seeing her go off on her own. Avoiding my dad rock and pop culture to curate a couple playlists on Spotify that I ended up just loving. One was modern indie folk. I insisted that be a genre in an old genre based draft here. So much good stuff my 11-12 yr old introduced me to. The other was chill beach music. Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter... and quite a few Damien Rice's. It's a lovely song (y)

Run Runaway - Slade
(new song)
Fun song - another one I remember as much from the video as anything else. Mostly Noddy Holder and his goofy up-close facial expressions.
I fell in love with this one night watching Friday Night Videos - I had been out that evening, and set a VHS tape to record because the ads had said that there was going to be a new ZZTop video shown that night. Got home and watched the tape at like 3:00 AM, and the very last video on the tape was Run Runaway. When that incredible drum opening started I was hooked - I swear I think my hair stood on end. One of the few times in my life I tried the very next day to go shopping and find a copy of an album to purchase (and of a band that I knew virtually nothing of at that point). Struck out (try asking a small town Texas mall clerk for the latest Slade album and see how far you get), but at least I had the VHS tape to tide me over until I managed to score a copy. I've been a Slade fan ever since - and I find still it impossible to NOT air drum to this song.

It's a big part of the reason i love this playlist so much. Yeah, them drums. It's a song I know quite well but had forgotten. How is that a thing? Thanks for giving it back to me.

See chameleon lying there in the sun

I can see it being a little cheeky for some, but I'm the dummy who got Little Willy stuck in his head. Now this.

It's because it's going to be Marc Ronson's Ace award ... for an 'Amy Winehouse' song.
I know I'm being a bit pedantic , but it's actually a Zuton's song. Amy Winehouse was appearing on Mark Ronson's covers album and she selected Valerie to record with Ronson and the Dap Kings. A second version they recorded that day later showed up as a bonus track on the deluxe re-issue of Back to Black.

So good.
You should put that in a letter and send it to the couple. It will make his day.

I'm sure I should know what this means. Yet I don't.

You actually shouldn't. I'm sorry. I was talking a bit past you. It's my placeholder prediction for who wins the Ace award. We will see when it is revealed if I was correct or not. And I won't change stories or fib; I'll self-report whether or not I got it right.

I've seen him around a couple times since then. I think they live near the place moved into last year. Maybe I'll say something one day...

The Only Living Boy In New Cross - Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine (titusbramble) - Damn titus, never expected to see Carter USM. For a brief period in the mid-90s, I was grebo all the way down to my bad attempt at short dreads - looked like I could have been a member of Carter or Pop Will Eat Itself.

Charlotte Sometimes - The Cure (simey) - so happy (sad?) to see the gothy verson of the Cure make such a strong showing on this list.

The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks (timscochet) - I used to kind-of like this song but fatguyinalittlecoat ruined it for me. Pre-pandemic, we went to a regular trivia night and our team name had the word "society" in it. Unbeknownst to the rest of us, fatguy picked Village Green... as our theme song, which would get played whenever we won - and we won a lot. Talk about something that brought down the mood of a victorious Tuesday night. So after a few weeks, I went to the host and changed it to Hey Ladies by The Beastie Boys ("ladies" was also in our team name). Fatguy whined about it for eons. Everyone else in the crowd was thankful.

One Tree Hill – U2 (karmapolice) - Love this. Simey described the vibe perfectly yesterday, so I can't really add anything.

Something About You - Level 42 (Doug B.) - For me, this will always be the roller-skating limbo song. My first job when I was 14 was as a DJ at Skateland. There were certain songs that the manager insisted be played at certain times (Billy Ocean's Caribbean Queen was for backwards skate) and the 12" dance remix of Something About You was mandated for Saturday and Sunday afternoon limbo. Crossing the manager (Leo) meant putting your measly $3.35/hour at risk.

Supernaut - Black Sabbath (Oliver Humanzee) - The perfect opportunity to post my favorite Ministry side project's(1000 Homo DJs) cover, complete with Art Linkletter's fearmongering anti-drug message for the intro.

Yeah, I really hate that Mark Ronson will win the Ace Award for that song (and I realize this is spoiler-y, but it seems obvious to everyone already). I'm going to award a second Ace Award to the runner-up, which I'm sure the artist in question will be thrilled to hear.
Both Mark Ronson and Mick Ronson well represented here - seems appropriate.
Kim Deal and Kelley Deal say hi in their general direction.

My first job when I was 14 was as a DJ at Skateland.

For a second there i did a double take, then realized there were probably a thousand "Skatelands" at that time.

Everyone clear the floor by the nearest exit, please.
Next up is couples. Any combination of two people holding hands. Couples...
Reverse skate always separated the haves and the have nots.
I'd forgotten how damn fast I was around the rink. Pretty sure it was the unbuttoned flannel shirt aerodynamics.

The switchblade comb in the back pocket was a bit weighty though.

I haven't been reporting on the next day's double-ups and the like because, omitting just a few people, collectively we only voted for about six artists, so there are just sooooo many. I know we have at least one quadruple-up tomorrow. Tomorrow will also feature two Deja Votes, which also don't seem quite as special in this countdown. The most interesting thing I see on tomorrow's list is that we have an artist that has not been previously selected and will also not be selected again...but tomorrow they have two votes for two different songs.

I see that the favorite artists and favorite songs are starting to look a little more like the end result, but only a little. Particularly in the songs there will still be a lot of shuffling. But at least some early leaders like Sweet or Joe Jackson aren't at the top anymore.

Nah, I was rolling with this back in those days.

A little reflection on some of my last few selections. When I put my list together (using the ranking tool), I thought it was really odd that none of my six favorite British Isles bands had a song in my top five. Five of the six though showed up in spota 6-11.

Half A Person - The Smiths: “Call me morbid, call me pale.” I can identify with this. The Smiths are my all-time favorite band and I never even knew about them till a month-or-so after they broke up. Shame that Morrissey is such a knob. There’s a local Smiths cover band that does one show per year - it’s such an overwhelmingly positive experience that my one friend scheduled his wedding around the show. Would likely rather see them than an actual reunited Smiths.

Fascination Street - The Cure - the only imperfect thing about Fascination Street is that I’m dying for another verse. For me, the Cure were never quite the same after this.

Darklands - The Jesus and Mary Chain - my first favorite “cool” band. First heard them on 120 Minutes (won’t name the song just in case) and I was instantly hooked. Rode my bike to the mall the next day and found Barbed Wire Kisses (which I didn’t even realize was a B-sides compilation) on cassette. I had the bad luck of seeing them play a show at the Troc in Philly in October 1998. After maybe 10 minutes, Jim and William got into a fist fight on stage and that was that. JaMC didn’t perform live again for a decade. Darklands is my favorite album of theirs, and the title track is gorgeous, especially the bridge.

Stand By Me (MTV Unplugged) - Liam Gallagher: when Be Here Now got released in 1997, all the critics told me I was supposed to hate it - overwrought, self-indulgent, cluttered - a “cocaine record.” Stand by Me, with all the strings and harmonies, exemplified this, but I loved it anyway. Oasis pretty much stopped playing Stand by Me live after touring for the album. Liam brought it back for the first time at an Unplugged performance in 2020, and the orchestra and chorus double-down on everything the original critics hated.

Transmission - Joy Division - I was oblivious to New Order until the Pretty in Pink soundtrack and probably didn’t learn about their origins until a couple of years later. Once I finally heard Joy Division, I fell hard.

Depeche Mode were my sixth band but they mysteriously missed the cut.
