Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

Guessing game: will more points come in from people who...
- are trying to be cool and edgy (Elvis Costello)
OR
-went to college (The Smiths)

Apologies to anyone who doesn't get the in-jokes. Maybe someone could explain.

Definitely "went to college". I know this because I went to college, and I fully expect that most other middle aged dummies participating here went to college.

Seven years down the drain

Seven years down the drain

Five here. Five spent without the classics. Saving grace was political theory professors, eventually.

When I was young, younger than before
I never saw the truth hanging from the door
And now I'm older, see it face to face
And now I'm older, gotta get up, clean the place

What's more "college".....being into The Smiths or having a Bob Marley poster on ur wall? A coexist bumper sticker on ur Subie?

I went to college as well, but I must've missed The Smiths 101 class.

I just read an article about Morrissey from a few years back. Seems like the typical complicated "lead singer" kinda guy.

The “college” thing is based on something some one said once. Honestly I like The Smiths now - but never listened to them in college and not really until they were already done as a band. I’ve actually probably listened to them more in the last three years then I did during the entire 1980s.

I don't even remember the whole conversation now, but the college thing was when a poster here claimed - and wouldn't budge from the stance - that The Smiths were an obscure band unless you went to college on the East Coast.

This is turning out to be a lot harder for me than the US one. I'm on the verge of just throwing in two songs from 15 different artists...and one from Ringo.
I have 6 from one artist, 4 each form 2 other artists and I think I have 3 from two other artists. It's ok. Everyone will be ok.

I keep running into artists that I wish I would have taken - for both US and this one ...

Spirit - they had some great stuff ...:kicksrock:

big whiff on the UK one here - but I'm not going to change (so that isn't coming your way @krista4 )

West coast version the Cure?

I guess around here, we met in the middle -- plenty of Smiths and Cure love in the N.O. goth clubs circa 1990. The Cure -- with a deeper catalog -- seemed to get spun more, though.

I kind of associate The Smiths with high school because of one guy (one of my football teammates -- against type, a defensive lineman!) that wore the same "The Queen Is Dead" t-shirt to school at least once a week. I don't recall actually hearing any of their songs until I started going to bars/clubs, though.

The Cure is also associated with another high school memory: Another one of my teammates (another lineman) impressed our junior year English teacher during group discussion one day of Camus' The Stranger. If the you know the book and The Cure song, you'll know the tie-in.

Um, I don't think it's true that only people in college on the East Coast listened to the Smiths. That's why we still joke about it. :)

Said poster ruined the This Is Their Best Song draft thread with that stance and I ended up putting them on ignore. But it did lead to “you only like The Smiths if you went to college” shtick in every subsequent music thread.

The troll’s full argument was: The Smiths made little impact on the US charts, therefore barely anyone here was listening at the time. When a bunch of people responded with: I (or a bunch of people I knew) listened to them in college all the time, that’s when the shtick took off.

I graduated before they formed up. I'm guessing Zevon is my college equivalent. He was on the jukebox in the student union.

Thanks for the full story. That person probably went on a ton of ignore lists due to that thread.

Well that sounds like an argument you make while using your banana slicer.

So we're supposed to have someone vet our list? I have one. Should be pretty easy...

Send to me if the answers to the following three questions are "yes."

1. Have you or anyone you know checked your list against the ineligibles and partial ineligibles listed in post #3 PLUS checked any other bands not listed there?
2. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure it is in song title then artist name format?
3. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure that your your favorite of the 31 songs is at the top of your list, and the songs are in descending order of preference from there?

The answer is yes to all three for You/Me. I was just going to bounce it off someone else.

But WTH...I'll just send it to you.

You don't have to have someone do another vetting, though I appreciate that you were going to! I'm working through another list at the moment and will get to yours a little later. At this point the vetting is going more quickly because many artists have been fully vetted.

I’ll stop the world and vet with you

I had to re-ignore after the board migrated to the new system.

If anyone wants help with vetting, send me a PM. I've gone through a bunch of acts in forming my own long list so far. And if it's a band I haven't done, I've got a quick-enough vetting system down pat.

I might run a few by you in a week or so. I also have developed a pretty quick system, but a few band members on potential list makers are so obscure.... see what you come up with if I use them. Give k4 a swing at it too.

I had a change of heart over the past few days, so my list that was at 31 is now back to... 43.

I've noticed something about a lot of lists. In the 1-3 point range are a lot of bands I've never heard of, I'm assuming more obscure (like the Smiths) personal favorites. In the 4-6 point category there seem to be a lot of 80s/90s bands that might be considered guilty pleasures at this point. Not everyone, and maybe not even a majority, choose those "guilty pleasures," but if they do they seem to show up there.

This could change as more lists come in, but it's a little bit of a pattern so far.

I know I had to extend my ignore list as somebody managed to ruin a music draft with their postings. Anybody unchill enough to not vibe in a music draft is not worthy of my eyeballs.

Reminder: Not at all required, but if you'd like to submit a "last five out," I'm accepting those, too. Please let me know if you sent to me and I've accidentally omitted you from the following "received" list: Pip's Invitation; New Binky the Doormat; worrierking; Just Win Baby; Don Quixote; simey; DrIanMalcolm; Dr. Octopus; KarmaPolice; scorchy.

I commented once that you notice a similar pattern in our music draft. Usually first round or two is a sure fire song that's on everybody's radar, then its a few rounds of more personal picks, then after that more of a "oh ****, these songs are still undrafted??" round or two as people get more top songs.

I did exactly what you are describing here as well. My a couple of my first picks were purposely more obscure, and I moved down some big names to my also-rans to fit them in.

I have 20 lists in and vetted, so that means tomorrow is update time!

In the meantime, let's discuss again the ideas for contests this time. I think favorite artist and favorite song combined would still be a good one, as we did last time. I also like the idea of guessing the top 10 excluding the Big Three. Another good idea was top song from each of the Big Three, though maybe that's too duplicative of the first one. Am I forgetting any? I'm willing to fund charitable contributions for the favorite artist/song combo and one more, whichever we decide on as a group.

A fun, but maybe overly complicated one might be something on the lines of submitting a list of guesses for 5 fellow drafters. For each one, you have a band and song that you think will be on their playlist. Maybe for ease, the song has to be for the band you guess?

I think @krista4 might appreciate this one. My kiddo has a list we titled her Happy Playlist that has about 60 songs on it. We usually put it on shuffle, but she gets to pick the song she wants first/most. Tonight:

Me: alright, goofball what are we starting with?
Her: Birdhouse in Your Soul!
Me: Oh, good one! [goes to hit play]
Her: No, no Dad... Sir Duuuuke!!!

Both favorites of mine! The kid has great taste.
