Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

Speaking of formatting, another request... I learned that in order for falguy to work his spreadsheet magic, it would be really helpful to have all capitalization the same. Therefore I'm now going through and changing all capitalization to be consistent on every entry (fun!). To make my job less strenuous on future lists, please just initial cap each word of your song titles, whether or not that looks "wrong" (and it does to me, often). No all caps, no complete absence of caps, no random caps. It's not required and I won't send lists back to you if you don't do it, but initial cap everything would be really, really great.

This post lands at random and is not targeted to anyone in particular, but the last few pages seem to be getting close to spoiler-y. Guesses at what the group might like are welcomed and encouraged, but specifics about your own list, including songs or artists that didn't make it, should generally be avoided, in my opinion.

I just put in a long productive day working on my house project and listening to qualified music. The plan was to get enough done by now to sit down with hot bowl of stew and enjoy some Thursday Night Football. Um, Lakers Heat will have to do. Doh. At least I didn't miss trash day which I have been annoyed about since morning.

please just initial cap each word of your song titles,
I guess IDLES is ineligible then

Band names are band names, and I'll have to correct those all manually since some people include "The" and others don't, etc. Initial caps request only applies to song titles. And I'll still have to adjust some for consistency anyway, but at least I'd have to do less.

Should We Include The When It Is Correct, Or Is Skipping It Easier For You?

If it's correct, by all means put it in. I'm going to try to make them "correct" as well as consistent, though sometimes "correct" is difficult to discern.

How are you all verifying eligibility. I'm trying to use allmusic.com, and I'm running into this: https://www.allmusic.com/album/fishermans-blues-mw0000198387/credits

I go to the Wikipedia page for the album with the track. Often you can just hover over the band member's name in the sidebar and it will tell you where he/she was born. If it doesn't, I cut and paste that name into google with "band birthplace" like this. It's been solid and fast. If still no info that page often articles yada yada to check out.

And if you put in that much effort already and can't find anything, just assume they're OK.

ETA: Should add, assume they're OK if you have done all that and checked post #3.

I do not have any kazoo bands on my list.

I put out my recycling bin last night (Tuesday). Recycling pickup is Thursday.

Yep, Jay Lee Daugherty is the issue there.

Mister CIA is OK here -- Daugherty was a session player. The Waterboys did not have a drummer in the core band by that point.

By 1988's Fisherman's Blues, The Waterboys were a trio that recorded with lots of hired guns, most of whom only appeared on a few tracks. For instance, they used five drummers on Fisherman's Blues' thirteen tracks.

If it matters, Daugherty did not play on Mister CIA's chosen track.

EDIT: Posted this before I read your response, Mister CIA. All good.

You, sir, are a fact-checking pitbull.

As to the bold, it does not and never has. The rule regarding a member of the band making an album ineligible has always been the same. And this particular album and Mr. Daugherty were discussed early on in the thread. The album was ruled out as a result and will continue to be for consistency, whether or not anyone wants to change that now.

Moving on!

Allmusic "Credits" listings are kind of janky. Its list of Credits for Fisherman's Blues is a good example.

It combines songwriting credits, musician credits, and production/engineering credits all together in one list. Accordingly, Van Morrison and the long-dead poet William Butler Yeats were not members of The Waterboys. Neither was "Traditional" -- though Trad (as his friends called him) did compose one of the tracks.

There is another flub -- "Trev Hutchinson" and "Trevor Hutchinson" are the same person, but listed twice on their Credits list.

One more before moving on: this Wiki list is what we've been using and will continue to do so. It's been noted on post #3 forever.

I don’t see John Lennon on the first page — I thought some of his material was ineligible — did I miss a ruling?

Ah, I see. Accumulating members is kind of The Waterboys' shtick. If THEY say all those passing-through players are members, who am I to argue?

On a related note, The Foo Fighters should adopt that scheme. They could claim Justin Timberlake, David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Slash, Lemmy, Paul Stanley, Zakk Wylde, Jack Black, Norah Jones, Rick Nielsen, Billy Idol, John Paul Jones, Bob Mould, Paul McCartney, Brian May, Joe Walsh, Fred Schneider ... and Rick Astley.

Plastic Ono Band stuff is listed there. If something is attributed to "John Lennon and Yoko Ono," it's not on the first page because...well, it seems pretty obvious? If it's attributed only to John Lennon, as several albums are, then it's good to go.

Trad Rocker is the name of my fictitious air guitar band.

I've run across this phenomenon with the North Mississippi All-Stars. Probably why, whenever the question is asked, who is the most talented band, NMAS and Los Lobos are always the first to that come to mind.

ETA: Three-hour live show, if you're into that sort of thing.
Edit Part Deux: best part (...if Duane Allman and Dickey Betts made a baby)

Random comment that may only be interesting to me - Glass Onion the movie was better than the song. And I love the song.
Krista's reaction

I saw "Knives Out" on a plane and was underwhelmed. Is this one considered to be better? The original was really well received, though, so I guess that was just me.
Watched both of em back to back not long ago. I prefered the first one. I thought both were enjoyable though. Daniel Craig was really good.

I turned to my wife after and commented exactly that. I appreciated the timeliness of the storyline, but much more than that was Janelle Monae's performance. That was what differentiated it from the original for me, but I also enjoyed that so this may not be for you.

Maybe I and only a few others will like it, but I thought maybe another of the guessing contests could have to do with Hard rock/Metal artists?
In general, I am going to try to be more involved in the guessing games, and selecting faves from each round. And you know I def dig the idea of a rock/metal one. 🤘
When thinking about it, IMO there is the core 3 for metal in this one. If others are in agreement about that, we could do similar to our general guesses- top point getter song for each of those 3, and/or what the next 3 or artists will be for the genre as far as total points.

Metal may do surprisingly well. I hope so - I like Metal a lot. Especially 70's/80's.

Who is better, Mick Ronson or Adrian Belew?

For this thread, songs with Ronno will dominate. Fripp and Earl Slick will follow with SRV possibly sneaking in a few licks. I love Lodger more than most but I don't think Belew will be represented; nor will Reeves Gabrels and David Torn.

Actually Carlos Alomar will probably finish second but he's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing.
