Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I will say I'm somewhat speculating on the Stones - I'm basing that on what people say around here. They would be the one in the big 3 that I would expect to get dropped.

The other thing I didn't consider until just now is the number of people limiting an artist to one song. If we could somehow magically force people to submit their 31 favorites even with duplicates artists then I would strongly expect Beatles and LZ to lap the field and with the depth of their catalog probably the Stones too. The couple of artists I'm thinking of that could compete with that don't seem to have that same level of depth (IMO).

I mentioned to Krista when i submitted my list that I think the Stones run away with this. To my ears, out of all these "big" bands we're talking about (and I'll include Floyd and The Who), the Stones sound fresher. I'm not as quick to "skip" their songs on a playlist as I am with Zep or the others, who just sound tired to me.

I'm probably biased but I don't see any way that the Beatles aren't #1. I think even I had forgotten how loaded the LZ catalog is until we did the Anarchy countdown. I like the Stones but they have more misses than both those other two combined for me.

You are probly right.....early, and late stones, meh. Although I feel that way about early Beatles, and late Zep kinda too.

For me though, the best of the Stones is hard to beat......there are a lot of iconic rock songs in their catalog. I would imagine the top 10ish Stones songs will rank very high.

Led Zeppelin is almost as annoying as Rush.
I feel the same way about U2. I don't get it. Their guitar player calls himself "the edge", yet they are a huge yawn fest, imo......and Bono.....I agree with Southparks take.

PS......I like Rush
I can see that. Their apex was clearly Joshua Tree. Boy was also excellent. But the rest is verrrry hit or miss.
Achtung Baby is brilliant. Anyway, there's a whole other thread/countdown about that.

Did we discuss Sade? I would have thought we did, but I can't find it. Anyway, she's eligible (British mom who moved to Nigeria for a bit). I'm putting her on the A-OK list.

Noooooo! I had her on the banned list (I swear we talked about her as not being eligible) Her father was not from the British Isles. I have my 31 (just trying to put them in order) now I have to bump someone... I just don't think I can do it this late.

I most definitely have paid no attention to her career. As you might recall, I'm not really into female singers (other than Aimee Mann). Couldn't name a single one of her songs. But just lumped her incorrectly with a bunch of other female singers!

My list will almost certainly have fewer women than the American one. The ineligibility of Sade and Joan Armatrading removes two sure things.

@Hov34 Found it! You were right. I didn't look into her at the time above and just assumed she was an "obvious" ineligible, which is also why I wouldn't have put her on post #3. Someone who was very careful with their research pointed it out to me when sending their list.

I didn't want to get into this detail if not necessary, and I won't now, but having one British parent at birth generally would have made her a citizen by birth. One parent is enough in the UK, as opposed to the US. This is why I've always listed "parentage" in the A-OK list in post #3 instead of "both parents."

If anyone who has already submitted a list would like to sub in Sade, please let me know and I will make the changes. Also, I think we should make her eligible for the "catch-all" draft, too, in case people want to honor her but had written her off for this one.

Obviously a lot of people like U2. They just never did anything for me. So i take jabs when it feels right, just like Mr Dufresne does with Zep.

Its funny I have a couple buddies who don't like Zep either, but like rock music in general....kinda blows my mind a bit.....one of em likes Sammy Hagar too. I told him his opinion doesn't matter.....sorry, those are the rules.

Also, surprised at the reveal that Led Zeppelin is a top-3 heavyweight. I'd would have guesed that they were in tier 2 along with about four other contenders.

Respectfully... :ROFLMAO:
Alright, I get it. Without knowing the current totals, there's one artist I'd expect to finish very close to Zeppelin, if not outright own third place, and I'll bet everyone participating can guess who it is - not because I'm a honk for said person, but because of their artistic and musical talent.

EDIT: After catching up on the thread I surprised I'm thinking of someone's whose name has not been dropped recently.

I would have figured the The Kinks or The Who would be part of the Big Three. I'm not sure why it's obvious that Led Zeppelin, a blues-derivative band, would be among the Big Three. I certainly wouldn't have them there.
I'm thinking of someone else for third place, not The Kinks or the Who (though I think those two will be highly regarded. There are three individuals not mentioned here I think are show-ins for a top-10 finish, one head and shoulders above the other two.

Except that my last update post gave very specific information for how far the Big Three were outpacing the others at the time, as well as how close the top two were, but I can see now who read that and who didn't.

Our #2 and #3 artists switched yet again, and though #1 has hung in at that spot for a while, it is extremely close. This is likely the only time I'll give specific point-values, but our #1 and #2 are separated by only 12 points, 566-554. That's just how close it is going to be. Your vote counts. One of our Big Three has appeared on 19 of 20 lists.

While our Big Three each have more than 500 total points, no other artist has garnered 400 points yet, and in fact only three other artists have broken the 300-point mark, so this Big Three really is shaping up to be distantly ahead of the others. One of the three artists with 300+ points seems to have the most fervent fans, as they are averaging over 24 points per vote received. No one outside of the Big Three is coming close to that average.

I hesitated to bump this in case anyone wanted to take Dr. O up on his bet, but it looks like no one was going to. I suppose it could change as we were less than halfway through at the time, but based on what I'd already told you guys, at the time there was a wide gap between these three and the others, and the top choice was very much up for grabs and not clearly going to be the Beatles or whoever people were saying.

I can not read better than anyone, ever.

Yes, I do remember you saying that and was surprised (especially by a “wide gap”). I’d still be willing to honor the bet - heck I said it. The money is going to charity.

ETA: if no on takes the bet you can just add my $100 to the main prize or a secondary contest.

My list of 31 songs and my contest entries are in as well. So this is all just discussion.

Once again I put very little thought into my choice for the top song, but at least this time I took a song that I listed high at least unlike last contest.

Did you use the same list that you are using with the original idiots? And how is that countdown going?

Yes, same list. It’s actually going well and has been fun so far.
I’ll post their #31 when you post ours.

Oh, you tattled on yourself. Luckily, we're all hear to face the music.
You spotlighted me to the Thread Master, Mister RAT. I still don't know what the bet is.
Gooses and ganders, and all that.

I think the bet DocOc put on the table is $100 (to charity) that when all is said and done, The Beatles, Stones, and Zeppelin will not all hold down the top 3. Says the guy who does not read

One day, British Rock will rise to the level of Canadian Rock.

For the record, I both love this song and laugh my *** off every time I play it. Don't think I can say this about any other song.

That's awesome of you. And you could still win!
Not sure if you responded before I edited:

Oh, no, I had responded before that. Even better. Thank you!

Just realized that Bryan Adams appears to be eligible due to British parentage. Update your British Isles music lists accordingly.

@krista4 is this ***official?

Interesting. From what I can tell, even if they then held dual Canadian and British citizenship, he would have had a claim for British citizenship. I guess he's eligible. If anyone truly cares.

Surprisingly enough, I do care. :bag: This and the Sade news are list shattering.
