Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Respectfully... :ROFLMAO:

I would have figured the The Kinks or The Who would be part of the Big Three. I'm not sure why it's obvious that Led Zeppelin, a blues-derivative band, would be among the Big Three. I certainly wouldn't have them there.
I was one of the people who weren’t sure who the third band was in the “big three” (and even asked) - so it wasn’t very obvious to me either.

Stop it, both of you.

RE-RE-ANNOUNCE:

For the ***OFFICIAL*** contest, please send to @Val Rannous your list of the following:

1. Seven (7) artists that you believe will round out the top 10 along with Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Rolling Stones.
2. The artist that you believe will receive the most points overall, including the Big Three.
3. The song that you believe will receive the most points, other than songs from the Big Three.

You will receive one (1) point for each correct answer in #1 and #2 above and two (2) points for a correct answer to #3. If there is a tie, then the person whose choices in #1 above score the most cumulative points will win. If we need another tiebreaker after that, it will be arbitrarily and capriciously decided by me.

Deadline is 11:59 EST on Sunday, January 15.

Winner gets a donation to charity of his/her choice in an amount to be determined by me based on whether I have a job at the time, but in no case less than $250.
Not sure if it already is there, but can you put this (or the final version) in post 2 (3?) for future refence?

Did we discuss Sade? I would have thought we did, but I can't find it. Anyway, she's eligible (British mom who moved to Nigeria for a bit). I'm putting her on the A-OK list.

Noooooo! I had her on the banned list (I swear we talked about her as not being eligible) Her father was not from the British Isles. I have my 31 (just trying to put them in order) now I have to bump someone... I just don't think I can do it this late.
Some smooth operator you are.

It’s in post #1.

Willing to accept any changes to submitted lists to include Sade or Bryan Adams, if any of you wish.
I will take you up on this offer.

I just remembered two other artists that should have been on my list. But i won't open that Pandora's Box.

I've been to six concerts in my life - two of them were Bryan Adams (back in the early 90's). They were very good shows.

If we're talking about popularity among US Gen-Xers (which almost all of us are), Zep is absolutely on par with the Beatles and the Stones. I know you don't listen to "classic rock" radio, but if you did, it would make sense easily.

Coming from a similar position - Northeast, friend of Pip, lots of classic rock listening time - some of our frame of reference may also be coming from the annual Firecracker 500 or similar such countdowns. And in those, the Big 3 were always the ones with the most songs; The Beatles would have probably two dozen, the Stones and Zep ranging from 16-20 or so each. Then it would drop down a notch to a group including Floyd, Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen in the 12-16 song range, and then the next tier down were a big mish-mosh that would rope in Skynyrd, the Allmans, U2 (now, not back then), the Who, CCR and perhaps Neil Young and a few others I'm missing.

I honestly don’t think Bryan Adams should be eligible for this countdown (and not just because I don’t want to listen to him ;) ) - does anyone really think of him as British?

He’s Canadian.

Maybe this is more “spirit” of the rule v the literal rule but it jusT doesn’t seem right to me.

Obviously I’m not standing on a table here - and if he’s in, he’s in. Just saying….

The decade comparison is as such - my songs from the UK list are much more concentrated in three decades. Nothing older than the 60s, but whereas the 90s-today accounted for 9 of my Us list, they're just 6 of my UK list.

I mean the Canadian government did apologize for his infiltration of our airwaves, and ear holes, on several occasions.

Yeah, I had tongue planted in cheek when I posted about him having British parentage. (Sorry for causing a stir.)

If I was picking one of his songs, I’d probably include him in the catch-all rather than this one personally, since there is option is to include him in either, and I associate him about immeasurably more with Other/Canada than British Isles.

But uniform application of the parentage rule would seem to make him eligible and folks can do what they want.

If it makes you feel any better he’s not eligible for my list due to him sucking.

@krista4 Your world and mine collided on SiriusXM this morning. The Beatles Channel played James McCartney’s version of Neil Young’s Old Man.

(Followed by Dear Boy from Ram. Guess it was a theme.)

Oh wow, I’ve never heard that. How was it?
Not bad. He was singing in a pretty high register and I thought it was a woman until I looked at the display.

The only way he may make one of my Top 31 song lists would be if we do only songs by artists named "Bryan" (and it must be spelled that way) and even then I'd probably go with 31 Bryan Ferry songs.
I like some of Bryan Adams songs. I like his voice. He obviously has his haters, but he found his audience since he is one of the best selling music artists of all-time.

His early stuff, which was competent early-80s AOR, is fine. When he started becoming a cheesy ballad magnate, I was out.

I agree. Let’s nix Bryan and put him in another countdown. It just doesn’t “feel” right. All the others are thought of and identify as hyphenates. He didn’t grow up in the British Isles, and by the time he was born both his parents had Canadian citizenship (though presumably keeping their British as well).

@Andy Dufresne and @Eephus , you can save him for later.

Let us never speak of this again.

That's the other thing.....Bryan with a y....reason #27 that he's lame.

I'm Brian.....my good buddy is Bryan......we like to bust balls so as you can imagine we each prefer the spelling bestowed upon us by our loving parents.....the other spelling is obviously wrong.

There was a huge black tomcat belonging to my neighbor at my last house who would come over and hurl himself at our slider door presumably trying to murder our wimpy cats. We referred to him as The Terrorist. Then one day we heard the neighbor calling for him to come in for the night: “Bryan, it’s bedtime!” We were :lmao: that the fear-provoking cat we’d called The Terrorist for a year was named the decidedly un-terroristic “Bryan.” And it actually was with a “y,” as it turned out.

Good ruling. I think that’s what Brian Boitano would do.

When he was in the Alps fighting grizzly bears he used his magical fire breath and saved the maiden's fair.

I did attend a taping of the Letterman show and Adams was the musical guest. He played a song I don’t really like (from Robin Hood) but it was a good performance and was interesting to see in that setting.

When I was in high school, a mother of one of my good friends worked at the box office at the coliseum, and she could always get us good seats. I can't remember if she got a discount, but I don't think so. Anyway, we went to the Foreigner 4 concert in the early 80s, and Bryan Adams opened for them. I didn't know who he was, but I thought he was entertaining. A year or two later his Cuts Like A Knife album came out. I've always liked his rocking duet with Tina Turner, and I heard it just the other day in the grocery store.
