Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

Job news! Today I accepted an offer for...well, my existing job. I just remembered that, in this department of the company that will now officially be my employer, new hires choose a "superhero" to represent them. Is anyone confused about why I got out of the corporate world? Anyway, there will be an announcement of my coming on board that gives a bio, then three "fun facts" about me, and an indication of who my superhero will be.

Taking nominations for superheroes. I suppose for fun facts, too - I guess the Beatles stuff will be one. "Runs countdowns of favorite songs of internet middle-aged dummies" won't be. ;)
Congrats! And I know you have sort of settled on Rocket but I think Squirrel Girl is pretty awesome as well. I think the expert communicator fits very well.

Squirrel Powers: Squirrel Girl is a mutate with several traits that are similar to or usually associated with squirrels. Squirrel Girl possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and reflexes.[39] She possesses the proportional abilities of a squirrel scaled up to human size.[40]

Abilities

  • Computer Science Expert: Doreen is an expert in computer science.[40]
  • Expert Communicator: Doreen has "defeated" multiple foes through speechcraft alone, from Hippo to Galactus. During her time as an incidental ambassador between the 76 Worlds Alliance, Squirrel Girl assisted in negotiating and resolving grievances of 70 worlds. This was likely done with visual aids produced by Silver Surfer.[42]
  • Medium Awareness: Squirrel Girl has routinely broken the fourth wall and directly addressed the audience.[
Good backup within the small furry mammals willing to eat trash genre.

I'm abbreviating everyone on the lists I'm keeping, and Just Win Baby's list came in before yours, so I made him "JWB." Then realized it was going to wreak havoc with my search feature. Luckily I gave everyone a number this time, too, so I just do the searches that way. :)

For a minute before I had my coffee this morning I thought UH referred to Uncle Humana which would have been a Xmas miracle
That was my first thought too 😂

I miss Humana and T-bone (and ACP, Tufnel, et.al.).

And why isn’t @El Floppo participating in these threads?
I've been awol. started a new job in July... it suuuuuuuucks. no time energy for pretty much anything.... including new music.

hope you've been well though, gb marco... and the rest of you good people.

ok... and wtf was this draft?

It's not a draft. We are submitting lists of 31 ranked songs to krista. In a week or so she will release our picks semi-daily based on how we ranked them. So all our #31s will make a playlist and so on. The first time they did this (I missed it) the songs were limited to American artists only. That's the catch. This one is artists from Britain, Ireland, Scotland and Wales only. Lots of info atop page one. The deadline for a list is the 13th. I'd love to see your list. We have a lot of love for very similar 80s stuff. Hope you have the time. It's a much lower commitment than a serpentine draft. The 31 eclectic playlists are kinda neat.

Nobody goes there. It's too crowded.

ANNOUNCE:

As previously mentioned in a post no one read, for the first time in middle-aged dummy history, in addition to our regular contest, we are going to have a Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111. The winner of the Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111 will not only get a $400 donation to charity, but will also receive a personalized gift to enjoy for themselves. The gift will depend upon who the winner is and what I can come up with, and can also, at winner's option, involve additional charitable or personal donations to anyone you choose, or just some fun ****.

The 15 multiple-choice questions and tiebreaker for the Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111 are below. Please submit your answers to me, @krista4 , no later than 11:59 PST on Sunday, January 15.

Which of the following Rolling Stones songs will be their second-most popular: (a) Can't You Hear Me Knocking; (b) Dead Flowers; (c) Gimme Shelter; (d) Loving Cup; or (e) Paint It, Black?

4. You Owe Me 21 Cents:

Which of the following female-dominated artists will score the highest (Binky: which man will score the lowest): (a) The Cranberries; (b) The Eurythmics; (c) PJ Harvey; (d) Dusty Springfield; or (e) Amy Winehouse?

13. No Gray/Grey Areas (with apologies to David Gray - eligible!):

Which will represent more total points: (a) the cumulative total of all songs and artists with "white" in their name, whether stand-alone word or a portion of the word; or (b) the cumulative total of the following four songs: Back to Black (Amy Winehouse), Black Dog (Led Zeppelin), Black Star (Radiohead), and Blackbird (The Beatles)?

If no one gets it right, we will go to the next eligible artist (i,e, only one song selected). If no one selects an artist that is eligible for the award (i.e., does not have exactly one song selected), then the winner is the person who selects the artist with most points and only two songs selected, then three songs, etc.

I've been to six concerts in my life

Not to pile on, but just curious, do you not like concerts?

I went to 18 this year.
Not really, no. Can't explain really, why. I do like live albums, generally.
When I was a young adult I lived with dudes who were waaaay into concerts. So I ended up goin to quite a few. While I did enjoy aspects of the shows, I really don't like crowds......my aversion to crowds has gotten stronger as I've gotten older. So I don't really go to shows anymore.

How many of your top 31 UK artists have you middle aged dummies seen in concert?

Me, despite the fact I’m 55 and my list is dominated by the 80’s and 90’s, only 13.

Looking back at my US list, only 14. ☹️

I need to get out more often.

I don't think that seems like too few. Assuming you're a middle-aged such-and-such, even if you had a bunch of 80s, you would have been pretty young to be going out to concerts on your own at that point. I suspect you're at or above the average with your number.

On my US list, I had only seen five artists: Stevie Wonder (once), Lyle Lovett (six times and counting), Prince (once - at the Super Bowl!), Bob Dylan (once), and The Flaming Lips (once).

I changed question #1 slightly above. Please note. I've decided to omit A Day in the Life and Abbey Road Medley entirely since they were so collaborative.

10. 33% less than the 15 on my US list.

I have way more ‘70s stuff on this list than the US one, and thus more artists who broke up or died before I was old enough to go to concerts.

So in terms of those I've seen in concert (and I've seen a good deal of concerts, I think, but not sure how many...Pip would outrank me by about a factor of 9, but that's not really a fair comparison).

UK List: 4 (several were broken up/dead before I could get to them)
US List: Also 4!
Concerts I attended before the pandemic, if you count my friends' bands playing in bars: More than 1,000.
Concerts I've attended since the pandemic: 1 (a friend's band playing at a BBQ joint).

I’ve seen zero of the US and UK artists but that’s because I’ve never gone to a concert that I wanted to attend. I think I’ve been to maybe 2 concerts total in my life. I have zero interest.

I try and get to 2-3 concerts a year. It used to be more than that but I got old and all "no they aren't worth getting home at 2am". I did go see Maiden about 2 months ago in Greensboro NC (which kinda of shocked me that they played there. They were awesome) and I saw Graham Nash in spring 2022 (another great show - dude really brought it and sounded great at 80 years old).

Got nothing on the horizon though - I need to fix that.

I never consider The Funnels (college band with a friend in it) as concerts I saw, but I've seen them in bars/clubs/parties around 100 times. I even drove the bus and ran the mixing board a couple dozen times. Just got off the phone with that friend (sax guy). We've been buds since before kindergarten. :)

Legit, buy-a-ticket concerts? I dunno. Well over 150, possibly 200. 13 of them on my current still unfinished list. Since the pandemic? Counting LA Philharmonic who I've seen twice (ooh Mahler's 9th coming up) - 4. I'm tempted to see Social D in Anaheim this week, but I'm pretty busy and it's alot of driving. Two other old Chico buddies are going.

G-d, I've never even tried to count how many. A swift-and-dirty "off the top of my head" not including places where a bar band was playing (where the concert was the draw) brings me to somewhere in the range of 60, but I know that's a few light. I'm going to throw it in the 70 range, but I'm guessing that's about 40 between 1991-2001, a handful in the next few years, almost none in the "my kids are throwing up again" stage, and then another 10-15 in the last 3 or so years.
