You probably didn’t know their was a “new” Jersey
Yes, that6 where the Amboy Dukes were from.

I thought they were from the center of the mind
I think I was the windmills of the mind

Are you 8 miles high?

Sunshine of Your Love -- Cream
Gimme Some Lovin' -- The Spencer Davis Group
Knives Out -- Radiohead
Time of the Season -- The Zombies
Both Ends Burning -- Roxy Music

Sunshine of Your Love has been a favorite since high school and was one of my picks in a Desert Island Draft I did on another board. The main riff is just monumental and I never get tired of it. Gimme Some Lovin' is infectious and Steve Winwood delivers some of the best soul singing you'll ever hear, regardless of race, gender, nationality or (most importantly) age. Knives Out is a top Radiohead song for me for reasons that are hard to describe, but I think it most has to do with the interplay between the flinging and flanging of the guitars and Thom Yorke's vocal. Time of the Season has been another favorite since high school for its gorgeous melody and breathtaking production. Both Ends Burning pulls off the rare feat of being exquisite and bumpin'. But it really takes off in its final minute, where Bryan Ferry's voice and Phil Manzanera's guitar achieve fantastic crescendos.

Oh, and since I always comment on a song when making another post, I just had another Mrs. R moment when I realized that this Alarm song (Rain in the Summertime) is one I knew and already loved.
The worst we ever had for this was when we were watching American Idol. People were all excited about some song called Baba O'Riley. We had no idea what that was.

We do now.

I suppose if people don't check the link provided, which includes twenty-five songs and is more comprehensive and a cool mix, I'll list my last five out just so people can see it.

rockaction's last five out:

Jack The Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots - Black Sabbath
Revolution - Spacemen 3
Where Am I - Duffy Power
Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant
My Angel Rocks Back And Forth - Four Tet

I guess I'll do an explanation also. "Fairies Wear Boots" is one that I used to listen to in my twenties. I don't know why, but I just dug Ozzy's voice and the chord progression that goes along with the song. It sort of predates sludge or stoner metal, and I dug it, because I was a stoner.

"Revolution," by the Spacemen 3, was a song I heard Mudhoney cover back in the early nineties. Always liked the song. I would rediscover it years later and listen to the original, which was a lot more sonic/Stooges-esque. It's quite mesmerizing and trance-like.

"Where Am I" is a song I heard as bumper music for NPR's This American Life in an episode about NFTs, I think. It's blue-eyed soul, haunting and with full orchestra. It's sturm and drang for relationships. Duffy Power is in fine vocal form throughout.

"Goody Two Shoes" just has that beat and Adam Ant's vocal mugging is appealing. I've loved the song since I was a pre-pubescent youth.

"My Angel Rocks Back And Forth" has a long backstory behind it, but what I wanted to do, once upon a time, was construct a music/jewelry box that would play the piano riff when you opened it. It's very precious and ethereal, with a modern trip hop beat. I thought it would be perfect for its intended recipient.

Some thoughts on a few Last 5 Outs from others:

Oh Well-Fleetwood Mac

Not only is this a hell of a groove, it's a huge part of Fleetwood Mac history. It is the only song from the Peter Green era that has been played in their sets throughout their entire history. After Green left, it was sung on stage by, in turn, Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham, Billy Burnette, Buckingham again, and Mike Campbell. I have seen this performed live -- by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (which included Mike Campbell).

I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You-The Alan Parsons Project

I, Robot, the second APP album, has become a favorite in recent years. I genuinely think it may be the closest anyone has come to capturing the vibe of Dark Side of the Moon on a non-Floyd record, which makes sense given that Parsons was the engineer on DSOTM. If you are not familiar with it, I strongly suggest putting it on at night with headphones and your favorite weed, wine or whatever. I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You is its most successful single, but every track is a gem.

Stayin’ Alive - Bee Gees

This was my favorite song when I was 7.

Morning Train - Sheena Easton

Another one I was a big fan of before I became a teenager and decided it wasn't cool to like pop music.

Downtown Train - Rod Stewart

Exhibit A when I tell people I prefer to hear Tom Waits songs sung by other people.

Small Faces - Tin Soldier

Great melodic rocker with fantastic vocal by Steve Marriott. Should be better known on our shores than it is. I wonder if it will be on Binky's list since Todd Rundgren covered it.

"Baker Street", Gerry Rafferty

I am shocked this didn't make Doug's 31. Are we getting Right Down the Line instead?

Fairport Convention - Come All Ye

A band I really should have made room for, though I would have picked a different song. This one is as good an example of their appeal as any, though.

That’s Entertainment – The Jam

Paul Weller doesn't play too many Jam songs in his solo sets, but he did perform this one at the show I caught. It was lovely.

A Trick Of The Tail - Genesis

Shiveringly good. And yet, not the Genesis song I picked. Though on another day maybe I would have.

It Don't Come Easy-Ringo Starr

Not only is this my #1 solo Ringo, on some days it competes for my #1 solo Beatles.

Blackest Eyes-Porcupine Tree

Didn't know this one but have started listening to KP's playlist and it came up early. I have heard a few live shows but otherwise am not too familiar with them. I associate them with prog, but this song was surprisingly melodic and restrained. Need to investigate more.

Parsons really should get about half the royalties for DSOM.

"I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" is my favorite APP cut. It sounds almost like something Exile or ARS would have made. It's got a little Muscle Shoals in it.

Squonk and Ripples generally get more love than the title track, but that trick track does it for me. Me and a college bud would often leave town ridiculously early, like 4am, for our secret fishing hole on the Feather River. Soon as we left Lake Oroville and headed into the canyon, we'd play this album loud. It made for a surreal road trip many many times. Slightly hungover, seriously stoned, that scenery, that road - not another vehicle on it. This music and the long sunrise eventually lighting the way. It was leaving earth. They got no horns and they got no tails became something I've said in certain situations ever since. Whenever huge crowds of humans seem like a different species. Could be a Costco at Christmas, a traffic jam or a ballgame. Recently when Vegas opened up too soon and herds of unmasked humans flooded the Strip. My big bro's place has a view of that madness. We were in the backyard looking down on it after seeing local news celebrating the crowds. I said, "They got no horns and they got no tails." He said, "They don't even know of our existence." We high fived.

My original list was so proggy and my final answer just a touch. Feels like a regret here at midnight.

You had good taste as a youngster.

The groove in this is freaking awesome. I can understand what most of the classic falsetto singers (if you can't understand the lyrics Russell Tompkins is singing, you may want to get a hearing test) are singing, but I've heard this record 1,000s of times and I still don't know some of what Barry's lyrics are when he sings high.

It is good. I've largely lost my stomach for booze in the last 4-5 years, and feel like a lightweight when I struggle to finish a pint.

If I have 2+ I usually feel like dog **** the next morning.

I got the 411 from one of my wife's friends that the closest for cheap weed is the U.P., and oi hadn't considered that. Looking at it, i think it shaves off 2 hours from the round trip. Still 7 hours just for the drive though. I am leaning towards trying it on the 23rd though.
Glad it was at least enjoyable even if you aren't drinking much.

That sucks Wisconsin doesn't have recreational yet. Just ridiculous in 2023.
1 of the last 13 states holding strong with no form of legal MJ!! :<_<:

Before anyone takes a long drive to buy legal weed, check out the selling states laws in terms of limits. You also may have to pay in cash, as the ones in Michigan are not allowed to take credit or debit.

It's worth it only because MI let's me buy a lot, like a normal state. IL I can only buy 250mg of edibles a visit, for example.

I really liked the Belle and Sebastian song a lot
(It was new to me) - I’ve heard of the band but not sure I’ve ever listened as this was not what I expected. Thought they were more ethereal but this song was more rocking along the lines of Velvet Underground.

There's definitely a "shuffle" to it that you don't usually hear in the more cerebral forms of Brit rock.

Squonk and aTotT were my two favorites from that album as a kid, but the whole record is amazing. Even more remarkable since it came after a year of auditioning new lead singers and being satisfied with none of them before "promoting" Phil Collins to the job.

They get typecast as wussy because of that scene in High Fidelity, but that's not really accurate.

"Isn't it Time" - The Babys

A. I loved this song as a kid. Remember it vividly from the car radio.

B. My son's guitar teacher's brother-in-law replaced John Waite in The Babys in 2013 (his wife, guitar teacher's sister, joined at the same time as one of their backup singers, The Babettes). When they were younger, guitar teacher would tell him that he looked like John Waite, to which he would say "don't be ridiculous." And now here we are. Interestingly, the current version of The Babys (which has the original drummer and lead guitarist) includes some Waite solo songs in their set even though Waite isn't with them anymore. Also interestingly, the brother-in-law last year replaced Mark Andes in Firefall (which has the original lead guitarist but no one else from the '70s); he can do both because The Babys aren't touring as much as they had been.

That’s the spirit.

Seriously though, that’s a pretty cool story. I picked this one as my last 5 - very well orchestrated with the added horn section. Very underrated band in general IMO.

Always liked Lenny Zakatek’s vocals - wish we had heard more of him over the years (also on APP’s later hit “Games People Play”).

They used multiple lead singers on every album, by design. Parsons and his writing/producing partner Eric Wolfson envisioned their albums like movies, where the producer/director was the auteur and the singers were playing different roles.

Zakatek is the singer most identified with APP, though, along with Wolfson himself.

Yeah they liked to diversify singers, somewhat similar to Santana.

:lmao:

The Badfinger album cover still cracks me up.

Great song though, and one of the many that hadn't occurred to me for the draft. If i had thought of it, The Hollies tune would have made my list. Love it.

I didn't take many notes, but I will try to be better tomorrow on with the specific kudos on songs. Long story short, even this bloated playlist with 150 or so songs had very few songs that didn't click with me or I skipped. Much more common was a reaction of really digging the songs or being jealous I hadn't thought of it.

Great start to this adventure, all!!
