Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Query, as I succumbed to the clicking of the bait and read with great anticipation I found myself reviewing the musings of an effort to overinflate the value of a particular receiver who sets wide and find myself wondering, on a truly metaphysical level, what, in fact, did I just peruse?
Who do you think you are? Jack Kerouac?

Straight to No. 1 by Touch and Go was new to me and really liked it. It was fresh but classic at the same time.

Well Mrs R chose a more musical "mix" which doesn't have my raunchy sax. This version is the original and on my playlist...

I like the jive beat the mix has. I do also like the original.

Yup. I kinda hoped you picked it up from me when I drafted it some years ago, but when I clicked the link I knew it was something else. HBO. I really enjoyed the remix you picked. More musical, maybe not quite as oolala, but more than enough to feel like you scored upon listening. :)

New-to-me favorites from #31:

This is a Low -- Blur (Marco). I know Blur was very important to the UK music scene in the '90s, but all I knew before today was Song 2 and Girls and Boys. I was very impressed by this song's melody, arrangement and instrumentation, and it was less overly-British than what I was expecting (their other song from this round, also very good, was more in line with that.)
Woke Up This Morning (Chosen One Mix) -- Alabama 3 (Val Rannous). Captivating blend of funk, electronica and other genres. For some reason the vocal reminds me of Oh Mercy-era Bob Dylan; that's probably just a me thing.
Neat Neat Neat -- The Damned (Mt. Man). I'm also not greatly knowledgeable about the first strains of British punk, aside from some of its biggest songs and artists. I loved the energy of and guitar playing on this one.
God Put a Smile on Your Face -- Coldplay (Just Win Baby). As I said earlier, this was a pleasant surprise. More guitar-focused and forthright than the other stuff I'd heard from them.

One-Point Selections:

Yankee23Fan:

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

Mister CIA:

Pictures Of Matchstick Men – Status Quo

Mt. Man:

Neat Neat Neat - The Damned

landrys hat:

All Day And All Of The Night - The Kinks

Westerberg:

There She Goes - The La's

Hov34/krista4

Is She Really Going Out With Him? – Joe Jackson

zamboni:

I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses
Of the songs I already knew, these were my favorites.

My favorite new-to-me songs were by The Broken Family Band, The Hitchers and Blossoms.
I also liked the song by Robert Palmer and was surprised I'd never heard it before.

So many songs on these playlists now, it's hard to shout-out all the good ones. I am going to TRY to narrow down my favorites to 5 new to me or great surprises each time. Just know that there are very few skips for me in these, I generally like everything the rest of you are putting in there, and even narrowing it down to 5 was tough.

THIS IS A LOW - BLUR @Dreaded Marco (huh, he didn't come up either) I haven't been a fan of Blur, but this one was a very nice surprise!

This Is A Low is not typically the first song that comes to mind for Blur but it's my favorite from them by quite a bit for this reason.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the well-wishes and worried speculation. I'm back and fine. I'll have to play Mister CIA's dedicated rockers.

Some thoughts about today’s picks: I don't know why but “Touch and Go” reminds of a fairly sophisticated Lords of Acid or My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult.
I'm larfing as I'm listening to this. I could totally see myself screwing up even this interlude as the desired (possible) paramour.

Her: Let's go straight to number one
Me: (laughing) Point it out to me on the map, please. I just want to make sure it's straight. Speaking of which, are you straight? I mean, metaphorically speaking, of course.

Her: Go straight to number one
Me: And what exactly, tell me, is number one? I just want to hear you say it. I do love hearing things explained to me in detail.

Her: Straight to number one
Me:

You get the picture here.

Other, less personal thoughts.

@KarmaPolice, you weren't hearing things. Brian James could be the best punk guitarist ever. He lasted an album or two with The Damned before he got bored and left. The band was never quite the same, though they had another smash of an album after he left. But his riffage and leads held together a band in a different way than most punk guitarists did or could. I've personally never played but can hear it in his stylings that he's one of the best. Others have commented. You aren't alone on an island.

And Pip noticed it, too. I was typing this before he posted that.

As for the new ones, I need to listen to Mott, by Mott The Hoople. Easily my favorite new one of the ones I hadn't heard before, and I liked generally everything I've heard from their glam era, a style of music I particularly like for some reason. I've heard singles, but never the proper album. I also really need to sit with the Stone Roses, a band that, in my youth, I dismissed because they're an eighties British act, and I tend to not be so into that. Both wonderful songs.

There were a bunch of known-to-me songs that I love, too. Too many to list, really. There were some that made my list and rated quite highly, but we have been instructed not to say which or why, so I'll respect that part of the process.

I think he's imitating me, especially my tendency to have a William F. Buckley, Jr. tone in the PSF. But Yankee does Buckley better than I do. I'm all horse scraps and pigdin, really, just sometimes with an expansive vocabulary (I've been told so and criticized for using it, so that's not a boast).

Spot on, @Yankee23Fan. Well done.

:lmao:

Bring it on. I am Sesquipedalia Girl.

So NOFX didn't write this song about you?

eta* My vocabulary isn't all that expansive, actually. Just comparatively to your average person. But not to readers or people that appreciate the English language and revel in it, really.

Speaking of vocabulary, Merriam-Webster decided to tweet out the definition of the word "yips" tonight. Its definition?

yips | noun | a state of nervous tension affecting an athlete in the performance of a crucial action

Brett Maher, you were receiving national attention for that. Oof. That stinks for him. Your bad day at work is broadcast to a global audience and even the word-crazy, who should be watching Jeopardy! and doing crossword puzzles, have noticed your foibles there, fella. That's tough.

Steve Sax had it for years.

So did Tom Watson.

I walked up to Mr R and one of our friends and they looked up at me and asked what the yips were. It was befuddling without context; but yes, I knew.

And Chuck Knoblauch. The worst/most painful IMO was New York Mets catcher Mackey Sasser, who couldn’t even throw the ball back to the pitcher for awhile:

IMO the NFL is already a fairly poor product to watch now, and that only adds to it.
Link? (Other than Brady)
Just my opinion. I can't get through an NFL game anymore. I can't remember the last full game I watched - probably the ATL/NE Super Bowl? I find it mostly dull as I get bombarded with commercials, replays, and long stretches between plays.
Commercials are when you can check this thread.

That's fair. It's partly the commercials, but the pace the game has become more noticeable in my old age as well. I just feel like I am watching something, often for near 3 1/2 hours, that has about 20mins of actual gameplay.

Thinking more, it also seems like I am really only "into" a couple sports at a time. Long ago it was hockey and NFL, now it seems it's MLB and soccer.

Yes, this is how I get through single game watching, or the game thread itself. 🏈

Yes, I get the irony of complaining about the pace of play in NFL and listing MLB as one of the sports I consume now. In general I don't watch a ton of games of anything. If I watch something, often it's EPL on Saturday morning. I am into MLB mostly because of the stats, DFS, etc.. I buy the MLB package and will have on a Mariners game or two a week, but often it's while I am reading or don't something else since it's often so late at night for me. I also don't feel like the reputation of MLB and NFL are the same as far as how they market and present themselves.

I remember this well. My goodness.

The following is copied from my top 1200 thread. This song used to be a fun distraction, but over the years has become a go-to feel good song for me.

Anyone ever listen to Art Bell? I had never heard of him until the mid-90's, when I was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky. Unlike a lot of yahoos I get resumes from these days who received a Master's degree without doing a thesis, I actually had to do work. And I mean a ####-ton of work. Surprisingly enough, a lot of it was tedious labor, preparing pressure-sensitive film and then sealing it so I could later place it into joint spaces. And then a lot of scanning of the films. And then a lot of analysis of the scans. I'm talking thousands and thousands of films. Well, I tended to do a lot of this work through the night, when I could be interrupted and have the lab to myself. That meant playing whatever music I wanted. Or when I wanted to switch it up a bit, I flipped on AM radio. That's when I found the wonderfully weird Art Bell show. I'm not going to go into a big explanation of the weirdness of the show, but I loved his weird guests, the weirder callers, and best of all how Art pretended to take all of it so seriously. Well, what does this have to do with this thread? He had a handful of songs he used for bumper music in and out of commercials, and this was one of them.

Gonna give yesterday's list a full listen right now. 25% into Caravan and loving this music. Those keys sound like a jazz guitar with some added whammy. Good 6:30am music for making coffee and cleaning the kid's midnight munchie mess. By full listen I mean I'll probably skip stuff I am very familiar with, but that doesn't mean I dislike it.

I'm not all the way through yesterday, but it looks like I won't before Krista gets the next batch up. Stereo MC's Connected is the best new to me through the first 20. Had I skipped #1 after 2 minutes I'd be 5 songs further in, but c'est la'vie. Also, thanks for the Mott The Hopple and Colt adds - they each had fallen out of my library, but those omissions have been corrected.
