Pip’s Invitation:

A Tab In The Ocean -- Nektar
(new artist)

Wikkid loved these guys because they never forgot to put the "rock" in prog rock. Their '70s albums to varying degrees mixed prog, hard rock and metal, and each sounds very distinct from the others. I drafted three entire sides of theirs in GP4 -- Remember the Future part 1, Remember the Future part 2 and the suite that takes up side 2 of Recycled -- but here's another side-long effort from them that I haven't showcased before. It's the title track and first side of their second album and it is relentless all the way through. The guitar-and-organ-based attack suggests a grittier Deep Purple, the instrumental passages are always direct and powerful, and the vocal sections have nice little melodic patterns.

Side 2 of this album has a song ("King of Twilight") that was later covered by Iron Maiden.

The band was formed in Germany by a bunch of British-born blokes who all ended up there separately after being inspired by the Beatles' success in Hamburg. They gigged for many years before securing a record contract and by the time they did, they had become skilled enough to pull off the ambitious music they were hearing in their heads.

Perseverance – Terrorvision
(new artist)
Titus promised songs, I've never heard and he's 2-2 now. Liked this one a lot as well and added to me "new" playlist. At times the vocals reminded me of Kurt Cobain but in a more "power pop:" setting.

Yep, one of a few selections I've made based on how good they are live, have got four of my top five bands I've seen live selected in this quite high up (couldn't work out a way to make Daft Punk eligible or I'd put all five in)

For some reason I always thought Bush were American and it was just the lead singer who was British. Every day's a school day I guess

Yeah, looking at my list it's pretty heavily influenced by who I've seen live, my list of top live bands going deep enough to get an eligible top 10 being (ineligible for this in brackets, will spoiler unrevealed picks but list number to go back later):

Unrevealed #1, unrevealed #7, (Daft Punk), unrevealed #10, unrevealed #6, (Queens of the Stone Age), unrevealed #2, (System of a Down), unrevealed #15, New Order (in last 5 out), unrevealed #21, Badly Drawn Boy (unused), Starsailor (unused)

Would be a higher proportion, but only really starting to go to concerts from the 00's means a lot of my list was either retired from touring, or so expensive they may as well have been

Remember the Future part 1
On my not-too-long list -- kind of amazed Nektar wasn't more of a name in the U.S.
Circumstances conspired to make their window of opportunity too brief. Their first three albums weren't promoted over here at all. Remember the Future, the fourth, was, and became a cult hit -- resulting in their US touring debut, at which Wikkid was present. The next two did just as well but didn't really raise their profile any further. By 1976, they had had five straight years of constant recording and touring, and singer/guitarist Roye Albrighton was burned out and left the band, killing any momentum they had. By the time he rejoined in 1980, tastes had shifted and they drew little interest, breaking up for good a couple of years later (until a reunion in the '00s).

I seem to have a lot of unknowns again today, though fewer than yesterday. Just launching the playlist now. Of the knowns, I'll tag onto the ones above. "More Than This" was on my medium list, and "I Will Follow" is one of seven U2 that are tied as my favorite. Since I put that one at #1 in the U2 countdown, I went with a different one this time.

I'll also add "Fairytale of New York" as one of my favorites.

From now forward, just assume every Beatles song is an auto-like from me, since no one took "Taste of Honey."

Everything But the Girl is another band I’ve heard of - without having heard them.

Missing made it to my “British Countdown Finds” playlist, despite maybe being a little too electronic for my taste. Really dig the woman’s voice and the overall feel though.

I have a ton of catching up to do (like someone else mentioned it's going to be impossible to acknowledge everything I like)

But I did want to comment on this song

@Val Rannous Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - The Hollies

It's a great song, and I've noticed it's also everywhere. It's on your classic rock station, it's on your 70's station, it's on your "safe for work" station, it's on your soft rock station, it's on classic vinyl and classic rewind and also on a few of the harder rock stations. It's probably on Yatch Rock. It's on the jukebox at your local bar, where drunk people sing along but mumble half of it because we have no idea what he's doing after he talks about the FBI or what the heck made his temperature rise. Something about the DA man. And of the course the woman - that part we get.

Oops, I omitted "Cindy Incidentally," which is probably my favorite Faces song. Add to my favorites list, please.

EBTG is releasing their first album in twenty years in a couple of months.

On Mrs. Eephus putting Hard-Fi in her last 5 out: Holy ####, another Hard-Fi fan! I think I still have my green Hard-Fi Cash Machine t-shirt stuffed away in guest-room dresser. It would be a little snug right now, unfortunately.

I was a big fan of them and nearly saw them live in 2005. Unfortunately they were supporting the Arctic Monkeys and I was in Sheffield at the time so it was a bit of a hard ticket to get

The Hollies could imitate damned near anyone in those days. This is the best song CCR never did, and would be way near the top of my Creedence ranking if they had done it.

I really shouldn't think so but that M.I.A. song is catchy as can be.

And looking back, it was pretty funny that she flipped off the whole world during that Super Bowl halftime.

We had tickets to see them in 2006 but they cancelled a number of West Coast shows including Coachella because the singer was sick.
