It was also the first song that Phish performed at their very first concert (when they were college students in 1983).I have a ton of catching up to do (like someone else mentioned it's going to be impossible to acknowledge everything I like)
But I did want to comment on this song
@Val Rannous Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - The Hollies
It's a great song, and I've noticed it's also everywhere. It's on your classic rock station, it's on your 70's station, it's on your "safe for work" station, it's on your soft rock station, it's on classic vinyl and classic rewind and also on a few of the harder rock stations. It's probably on Yatch Rock. It's on the jukebox at your local bar, where drunk people sing along but mumble half of it because we have no idea what he's doing after he talks about the FBI or what the heck made his temperature rise. Something about the DA man. And of the course the woman - that part we get.
OMG even Steve Albini does stuff he doesn't like for a paycheck? They were all-in on the grunge bandwagon, so it's not surprising that many assume they are American. I only knew because of reading some of their press coverage during their heyday.+1 no idea Bush was British
And that album was produced by Steve Albini. IIRC, he actually likes them. I mean, the people, not the music. God no, not the music.
Admittedly I thought for a long time that it was still Graham Nash on vocals. The Hollies could imitate damned near anyone in those days. This is the best song CCR never did, and would be way near the top of my Creedence ranking if they had done it.
I'd thought until this countdown that it was a CCR song.![]()

Yes. It used to get played on the FM stations in Philly -- I had no idea until a few years ago when I got on my I Robot kick that Clarke was the singer on it.I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You-The Alan Parsons Project

The same lead singer from "Long Cool Woman" heads up a very nice tune on this same album.
EDIT: Already name-checked -- Allan Clarke
I should have used the Sean Connery from SNL's Celebrity Jeopardy spellingTwo days in a row with that kind of album cover (Robert Palmer's album yesterday)
I bought my copy of that Palmer LP from a used record store where some clever clerk had put a price tag with an arrow pointing directly at the model's butt.

I think that's how most people remember the Hollies, but it was kind of a retcon perpetrated by Jann Wenner (you knew this was coming from me, right?) because Nash was in THAT circle. Whereas the Hollies weren't cool after Willie left (imagine that). Graham's harmonies were sublime, but Clarke was, by far, the most important presence in that band. That I know - always associated the Hollies with Nash.Nash wasn't usually the lead singer, Allan Clarke was. I think I submitted just before the holiday. I was wondering if it was the song you teased that was on a number of early lists, but did not appear in more recently submitted ones.I hope the guys installing my HVAC system are suitably impressed with my varied taste in music, though they're probably wondering why I'm playing a Christmas song.
I agree. They were a pleasant pop/rock band when Nash was there -- and he left because he wanted more than that. Eventually, so did the others, and most of their early and mid 70s records are pretty interesting. 1975's Another Night is an excellent album.I think that's how most people remember the Hollies, but it was kind of a retcon perpetrated by Jann Wenner (you knew this was coming from me, right?) because Nash was in THAT circle. I think most of their best records happened after Nash left.

I actually liked OH's Tubeway Army better than today's.I hope the guys installing my HVAC system are suitably impressed with my varied taste in music, though they're probably wondering why I'm playing a Christmas song.
"Hey, you guys notice she only listens to three minutes of every song?"
I didn't find quite as many gems in my listening today.
Today's Pip epic was more up my alley than yesterday's.
shuke's epic was more up my alley still.
I enjoyed KP's Tubeway Army selection better than OH's from yesterday.
I didn't realize I already knew the Spandau Ballet song, which I like but I can't listen to them without thinking of The Krays.
Think I forgot to mention earlier that I'm a big fan of the Them song that OH selected.
I liked the Skids song but not quite enough to put it on the new-to-me playlist.
Same with the Cat Stevens, and that reminds me to mention that when he is selected in this draft I'm referring to him as Cat Stevens, not for political reasons but because I know how to spell it.
The only three to make the new-to-me playlist today were the Badfinger (@simsarge ), Terrorvision (@titusbramble ), and Records (@Westerberg ) selections, with the last being my big favorite of the day.
We all heard it in church last Sunday.
Bumping this, as it seems the most epic song posted so far in this thread has gone completely ignored.
I actually kind of liked it. More than most "new to me" songs today.

You hadn't heard No Matter What? Despite it being one of their biggest hits? And the band's history with Apple Records and George Harrison? And the fact that it sounds like Paul could have written it?![]()
Am I the only one who feels like I shouldn't join in the discussion about a song when it's on my list but not revealed yet? Like I'm giving something away.
IT'S MINE, DAMMIT!!!

I've probably heard it on the Beatles channel but it didn't stick with me.

Different people have different approaches. In both countdowns, when I've listed my favorite selections, I've included those that are coming up later on my list. Seems like most people don't, though.

Oh, I had been not revealing my future selections but as long as that is kosher with you then I will go ahead and do so.
Being warned about future Mary Poppins songs will be much appreciated by all.You hadn't heard No Matter What? Despite it being one of their biggest hits? And the band's history with Apple Records and George Harrison? And the fact that it sounds like Paul could have written it?![]()

I DON'T REVEAL THEM!!!
I just meant I might list it on my favorites WITHOUT SAYING IT'S ON MY OWN COUNTDOWN LIST.

It made my top 25 in the Zegras/Krista Beatles countdown extravaganza. It’s funny, whenever I think about the Beatles greatest songs, “I Feel Fine” is not one of those that comes to mind. And yet when I listen to it…it’s nearly a perfect pop song. That lead guitar, the vocals- it’s simply magnificent in every way.
