Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (6 Viewers)

New strategy today. I made a playlist of the songs that weren't immediately recognizable to me. 13 songs, just under an hour.

Pip’s Invitation: Child In Time - Deep Purple
I'm sure I heard this before while hanging out in somebody's basement while in high school. The organ solo helped Lou and I up the big hill on 21st.

simey: Planet Queen - T. Rex
I recognized this one when it went to the chorus. Love Bolan.

Don Quixote: Concrete And Clay - Unit 4+2
I recognized this one too about 30 sec. in and now I can't get it out of my head.

MAC_32: This Year's Love - David Gray
He used to get played a lot on the AOR station that I used to listen to at work in the early 2000s. Too bad there aren't stations like that any more. Quality song craft.

Yankee23Fan: Imagine - John Lennon
Never heard of the artist or song. Pretty good, may have a big career.

DrIanMalcolm: Connected - Stereo MC's
ditkaburgers did not have a dance routine for this one.

KarmaPolice: Breakthrough - Atomic Rooster
I always assumed they were more Proggy because of the Carl Palmer connection. This was more mainstream 70s Rock although it did pick up for the keyboard solo near the end.

Andy Dufresne: The Wolf - Mumford & Sons
Enjoyed this quite a bit. I picked a Marcus Mumford the other day in the 2022 song draft so maybe I'm becoming a Mumford finally.

The Dreaded Marco: To Hell With Good Intentions – Mclusky
I must have heard this before on Hoof but wasn't sure. There's a bit of IDLES going on here.

landrys hat: Animal - Def Leppard
Turned it up to listen. Sounds classic and modern at the same time.

rockaction: You Don’t Know Jesus – Mogwai
There's a definite thread from Post-Rock back to to Prog. It's kind of a long thread but this is a long song.

falguy: Alone Again - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Hov34: Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
Doug B: Young Turks - Rod Stewart
Made my long list

Just Win Baby: White Wedding - Billy Idol
zamboni: Blue Highway - Billy Idol
There's a shop owner in our neighborhood who does a Billy Idol impersonator act. Nice guy who sets up a great Xmas window display but he's about 5'5". Never seen his bit.

Chaos34: Lord It’s A Feeling (orchestra version) - London Grammar
The hushed opening got lost in traffic noise on Valencia Street. I was struck by how the long-short-long-short meter of the verse owes a lot to Rap music even though the song is nothing like Hip Hop.

AAABatteries: Whiskey In The Jar - The Dubliners
I'm more familiar with the Thin Lizzy version (Metallica's version is just Lizzy turned up to 11) but liked this. I don't listen to a lot of traditional folk.

Oliver Humanzee: Do They Owe Us A Living? - Crass
Icons of DIY Punk. Back in the early 80s, a lot of SF Punks had their logo spray painted on their clothing. Loved the movement but the song sounds kind of dated.

Mrs. Eephus: The Passion Of Lovers - Bauhaus
Wife's song. 10/10. The beat on the twos and threes is kind of interesting.

ditkaburgers: There She Goes - The La's
Daughter's song. 10/10. Pop perfection. Made my long list.

cosjobs: Teacher - Jethro Tull
Recognized the song immediately from hanging out in the Bober's basement during the 70s.

krista4: Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues (feat. Kirsty MacColl)
So this is Christmas and what have you done? Another year over and a new one just begun

I forgot all about Gilbert O’Sullivan’s song. Not one that would make it here for me, but it’s a really sad and beautiful song.

Take Me Out is growing on me. One more Playlist should do it.

On the other hand while I do really like Ballroom Blitz, I’ll skip it if it comes up again.

Known-to-me favorites from #29:

Valerie -- Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse (Scorchy)
Roundabout -- Yes (Mrs. Rannous)
Take Me Out -- Franz Ferdinand (Hov34)
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out -- The Smiths (Titusbramble)
Fox on the Run -- Sweet (Simsarge)
Siberian Khatru -- Yes (Eephus)
Teacher -- Jethro Tull (Cosjobs)
Love Reign O'er Me -- The Who (Higgins)
Ballroom Blitz -- Sweet (Val Rannous)
Connected -- Stereo MCs (DrIanMalcolm)
Long Distance Runaround -- Yes (Mt. Man)
Pink Moon -- Nick Drake (Westerberg)
Time Passages -- Al Stewart (Worrierking)
Imagine -- John Lennon (Yankee23Fan)
Girls on Film -- Duran Duran (Doc Oc)
White Wedding -- Billy Idol (Just Win Baby)
One More Time -- Joe Jackson (Zegras11)
Careless Whisper -- George Michael (Ilov80s)
There She Goes -- The La's (Ditkaburgers)

I appear to be MUCH better aligned with Scorchy on British acts than on American ones.

Knew 17 today. Moving up in the world.

Kinks (2), Duran Duran (1) and Tears for Fears (2 songs) all just missed making my list.

Seeing the Kinks was one of my favorite concerts ever. Such a great show.

Might have missed it.... Is there a standings link after 3 songs? Would like to see what they are at this moment.

Was thinking about this ...

The Sweet could be a dark horse for the Top 10 in Val's contest. An act doesn't need a wide spread of songs like the Big 3 have -- it just needs a bunch of separate people to pick those same few songs.

Another act was making me think about this earlier, but I've forgotten who it was :bag:

Love is Like Oxygen.
Love is a many splendored thing...Love LIFTS us up where we belong...all you need is love.

(Anyone...? :oldunsure: )
Sigh, yes, and I just saw that annoying director's latest movie, Elvis, which manages to both be an hour too long and gloss over some very important stuff that could have used more in-depth exploration. Pastiche-y, crammed with nonsense, and is it possible that Tom Hanks actually sucks in this movie? Why yes, yes, it is.
Well I can't vouch for anything else he's done but giving us scantily clad peak Nicole Kidman is all right by me.
For me, peak Kidman was about 6 years earlier.

Oh nice, were those 2 your picks? I never look to see who drafted what when I am listening. No bias.

Different strokes and all, but I actually liked this playlist quite a bit. Yesterday, I had 5 on the nose, but today I had to make a couple tough cuts to keep it to 5 for my playlist. Again, I was surprised a bit by who was behind a couple of the picks.

Specifically there were 3-4 songs from bands I groaned a bit when I saw them on my scan because I have negative feelings associated with them, but 2 ended up on my list. That's one of the things that make these adventures great and the reason I start on my song and hit random and don't look at the song on my phone until at least 1/2 way through the song. I am trying to be as honest in my assessments and reactions as possible.

You know what? **** it - why limit it to just 5 and deny shoutouts and more good music added to a playlist. I am guessing as we go on there will be more dupes and maybe some rounds with less than 5 that stick out for my playlist.

DAYBREAK - THE STONE ROSES @Hawks64 This funky sound is not what I associated with this band. Loved it.
THE WOLF - MUMFORD & SONS @Andy Dufresne This is one of the songs from bands I don't think I like for this playlist. Of course, yet another band my wife loves as well and she's probably wanted me to listen more and see a show with her. This had way more of a heavy edge to it than I associate with them.
TO HELL WITH GOOD INTENTIONS - MCKLUSKY @The Dreaded Marco I think I know a couple songs from various drafts, but never explored more.
LORD IT'S A FEELING - LONDON GRAMMAR @Chaos34 Great voice, great bass beat, great pop song.
TEACHER - JETHRO TULL @cosjobs The other song that made the cut from a band I cringed when I saw it on the list. I was jamming on it for a bit, heard that flute, and said to myself - "damn you, FBGer - you just made me love a Jethro Tull tune!!"
ONE OF THE BOYS - MOTT THE HOOPLE @Mister CIA I know a couple of their tunes, but this was new. Loved the guitar sound and solo.
FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK - THE POGUES @krista4 @Don Quixote This was what I meant by I owed don q an apology - I guess I somehow missed it the other day and also was confused by the chatter about a Christmas song with swearing in it. Also, while not a negative association, but when I saw the band I had a quick impression that it's not something that clicks with me. Thanks for proving me wrong.

Yessir. I try to do the same, as well and have little to no bias with who drafted what. Unless I see chatter in the thread, I don't know who drafted the songs I like until I type up the post and comments. That's when I look at krista's link to the post listing who took the songs to add in the @.

As much as I like Sweet I doubt it. I just don't see as many top 15-ish votes for them and you probably need those. I do think the songs we've already seen get continued votes in the 20's then start to tail off. They'll be like BOC in the last one - lots of mentions in the 31-15 range and not as much after.

Edit: Val posted standings periodically in the last one. Hopefully we see one after 5 rounds or so.

A small :hifive: to Hawks64 for my 2nd (acknowledged) crossover! Plus there were two other Yes songs today. Intriguing! I struggled with my choice for this band between a handful of songs. Roundabout was pushed down a tiny bit because of memes. Siberian Khatru is a deeper cut I possibly should’ve considered more. So respect for both Mrs. Rannous and Eephus! But let me look at some other songs from this round:

#29s
Recognized by title alone: 24
Sounded familiar: 4
Didn't know: 16

Selected Favorites:
Child of Time (Pip’s Invitation)
Mad World (shuke) - Another song where I’m so familiar with covers, I tend to forget how the original is so upbeat. In that lyrical dissonance way.
Fox on the Run (simsarge)
Young Turks (Doug B)

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Planet Queen (simey)
Concrete & Clay (Don Quixote)
To Hell With Good Intentions (The Dreaded Marco)
Lord It’s A Feeling (Chaos34)

Totally whiffed on Sweet - made me smile seeing them selected. Ballroom Blitz is a fun song.
I've heard this song before, but before 3 minutes ago couldn't tell you anything beyond that. **heart** By far the best new to me so far.
It was 60/40 picking Ballroom Blitz over their other hit.

Three-Point Selections:

jwb:

Love Is Like Oxygen – Sweet
(new song)

simsarge:

Fox On The Run – Sweet
(new song)

@Mister CIA - which was it? I was thinking Fox but honestly could have gone either way.

ETA - I have further comments but don't want to spoil anything.
Love is Like Oxygen.

Interesting - I would rank those 3: Blitz > Fox >>> Oxygen

opposite complete the go would I, Interesting

The new-to-me three-pointers today, like the already-knowns, were less appealing than the prior two days. I didn't end up adding any of them to my new-to-me playlist, but I did like these:

"Valerie" by Amy Winehouse - oh sorry, Mark Ronson
"To Hell with Good Intentions" by Mclusky
"Fox on the Run" by Sweet - I was sure I would recognize this once it started since I know the other two songs well, but nope
"One More Time" by Joe Jackson
"Do They Owe Us a Living?" by Crass

I hope you're right. One of my Top 10 selections hasn't gotten selected yet, and I'm kind of sweating it :oldunsure:

That's good though. It's total points not total appearances. With a lot of people doing one-per-artist, appearing heavily early isn't all that great.

Somebody didn't own The Dazed and Confused Soundtrack. That's the only place I've heard that song.

This is also why I tried not to take the thinking and guessing too far. Most are doing 1 per it seems, but all it would take is one fan doing 10-20 songs of a band to skew the results.

No, definitely didn't, though I did love the movie!

Just caught it on cable about an hour ago. Have seen it literally well over 100 times and never get tired of it. Not too many more enjoyable movies.

It was hugely popular with my age group in about 6th-9th grade, That along with the Forrest Gump sound track introduced a lot of us to the classic music of the Boomer generation. It was well timed as it was also about the time we were old enough to start developing our own interests, having our own stereos. Pretty much everyone I knew in Middle School has those CDs.

Oddly enough, OH just asked me out of the blue this morning, for no apparent reason, if I saw Dazed and Confused in the theater.

Like @simey, I had the 45 as a kid 👨‍🦳
It was popular on the radio in 1975. My sister and I shared a room until 1977, and we would go to war with who got to play what 45 or album and when. Some stuff we both liked. I know Fox on the Run got on her nerves. She played a 45 by Jigsaw that same year over and over again. I blame her for some of my insomnia. She was scared of the dark, and so the bedroom door had to be open, and the hall light had to be on. She was paranoid that all of her dolls in the closet were watching her at night, and so the closet doors had to be shut. No cracks at all, because the dolls could peep through cracks. She talked in her sleep all the time, and she would have nightmares and wake up with blood curdling screams. I never slept cause I shared a room with a nut.

We also listened to FOTR on this 8-track. Hated those things because it took forever to get back around to the beginning.
