Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

A few more today added to the playlist. I could have sworn I posted something yesterday as it was a round with a lot of new stuff for me, but I didn't see it. Something must have distracted me.

Today:
10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT - THE CURE @rockaction One of the bigger suprises of the draft here. Not that I liked a Cure song, as I like a bunch, but I had never heard this one or this sound from the band before.
HIGH ON A HILL - KATE RUSBY @timschochet I went from "FFS, simey" to loving this one in short order. Her voice pulled me in and kept me entranced. Yes, I know now it wasn't simey's pick but that was my gut reaction that it was her as soon as I heard the banjo kick in
HEAD ON - THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN @Westerberg I love what I've heard of them, including the other pick of their's today. This one was new, and I also loved it. They were also written down on my list as the 3rd to need a deep dive of albums of.
KEEP IN THE DARK - TEMPLES @landrys hat New to me artist and song. Loved it - had a bit of "Spirit in the Sky" on the guitars.
THE LIGHT POURS OUT OF ME - MAGAZINE @Eephus New x2 as well. Great tune.

Random thoughts:

The gee, thanks for proving my wife correct award to @krista4 as I was we were having a discussion that I don't know Snow Patrol and she was adamant that I indeed know them. Chasing Cars is a great tune .

Another dammit, now I want to watch these movies now double award to @falguy and @cosjobs . Your songs took me to Zodiac and Donnie Darko. Ironically, @MAC_32 gave a shoutout to Full Metal Jacket, and I didn't know what he was talking about. These Boots Were Made for Walking is that movie's song for me. Talking Hurdy Gurdy Man and Head Over Heels here.

How about an weird I'm glad I'm of an age where I DGAF what people think of songs I like so I can appreciate songs that @Doug B and @Andy Dufresne (among others) took. Back in the High Life and No One Is To Blame are perfect examples of fantastic songs that I was too metal to admit I probably dug just as much back in the day. (along with Duran Duran).

Magazine was formed by one of the former members of the Buzzcocks. I learned that in @scorchy's awesome post-punk draft from he and Leroy Hoard. I haven't listened to today's selection, so I have no real comment about it, but that's an auspicious beginning, anyway (being a former member of the Buzzcocks and forming a band, that is).

Yeah, I thinking I am totally confusing scorchy with plinko. :wall: WTF is going on??

I think they're pals and populate each others' threads and comments. That's where you're getting screwed up.

But plinko can be totes metal. scorchy is post-punk, rhythm and blues, and a bunch of other tastes.

Songs On My Original List of 75 that Missed the Cut

Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis (DrIanMalcolm) - my feelings on this are already well-documented across the FFA
Head On - The Jesus and Mary Chain (Westerberg) - My favorite JaMC song changes constantly, but this is always among them.
10:15 Saturday Night - The Cure (rockaction)
The Killing Moon - Echo & The Bunnymen (zamboni)

Songs Not On That List But I Still Love Them

October Swimmer - JJ72 (titusbramble) - I think I drafted this in Genrepalooza last summer.
How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths (simey)
Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones (MAC_32)
Brain Damage/Eclipse – Pink Floyd (Yankee 23 Fan)
Happy When It Rains - Jesus and Mary Chain (Chaos34)
Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones (The Dreaded Marco)
How I Wrote Elastic Man - The Fall (Oliver Humanzee)
Connection - Elastica (ditkaburgers) - Fitting position given their love for Mark E. Smith. And who cares if the intro was straight lifted from Wire?

New to Me Songs That I Liked A Bunch

High On a Hill - Kate Rusby (timscochet)
Keep In The Dark - Temples (landry’s hat)

Previously Lauded

In The Meantime - Spacehog (shuke)
Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe (simsarge)

If it helps, plinko=JZilla and possibly ZJilla. Scorchy's only alias was Peabo Bryson, but he dropped it when they made him change it to Peabo Bryson fan. Just to avoid confusion.

10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT - THE CURE @rockaction One of the bigger suprises of the draft here. Not that I liked a Cure song, as I like a bunch, but I had never heard this one or this sound from the band before.

Oooooo, I meant to mention this one, too. Wasn't familiar to me, and I loved it.

Dude, nice call on Budgie!
I was circling around Budgie but couldn’t find one standout to pick. Killer band though.
I had never heard of them until after I heard Metallica versions of their songs. One of those bands that probly gets more cred from other bands, than music fans, which is too bad.
I also got into them only about 10-15 years ago after hearing them on SiriusXM Deep Tracks. Didn’t realize at first that Metallica had covered them. I think Anarchy99 is the resident Budgie superfan in the FFA.

On my top 1200 list:
Pip’s Invitation: Every Picture Tells A Story -- Rod Stewart
New Binky the Doormat: Tuesday Afternoon - The Moody Blues
simey: How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths
DrIanMalcolm: Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
zamboni: The Killing Moon - Echo & The Bunnymen
Val Rannous: In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry
Zegras11: Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
ditkaburgers: Connection - Elastica

Other favorites:
Yankee23Fan: Brain Damage/Eclipse – Pink Floyd
jwb: Flying High Again – Ozzy Osbourne
scorchy: A New England - Billy Bragg
Mrs. Rannous: Rock Of Ages – Def Leppard
The Dreaded Marco: Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
falguy: Head Over Heels - Tears For Fears
Chaz McNulty: Running Up That Hill – Kate Bush
cosjobs: Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan

New to me favorite:
landrys hat: Keep In The Dark - Temples

Great group of songs, as always! Quite a few I knew, plus 2 more (10:15 Saturday Night & Connection) I should’ve recognized by name, but instead got like ten seconds into them.

#25s
Recognized by title alone: 24*
Sounded familiar: 2
Knew from this countdown: 1
Didn't know: 16
*This counts Brain Damage/Eclipse as one song

Selected Favorites:
How Soon is Now? (simey)
Flying High Again (jwb)
Back in the High Life (Andy Dufrense)
Ooh La La (Hov34) - Tough call, but I’m giving this the “biggest whiff by me” award for today.
Connection (ditkaburgers)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
She Does It Right (worrierking)
Always The Sun (Dr. Octopus)
Keep in the Dark (landrys hat)
Happy When It Rains (Chaos34)

Pip’s Invitation:

Every Picture Tells A Story -- Rod Stewart
(new song)

This was the last song that made my list -- before I decided on an order. Looking up and down at what I had chosen, I decided that Rod, and particularly something from Every Picture Tells a Story, needed to be represented. It's one of my favorite albums and every track is immensely compelling. The leadoff title track, probably the most dynamic tune on the record, is my favorite from it at the moment. It simply insists upon itself in a way that I can't resist.

My next three selections have commonalities with each other but not so much with the rest of my list.

Known-to-me favorites from #25, with the exception of my own pick and Cruel to Be Kind, which is known to be on my list:

Gimme Shelter -- The Rolling Stones (Marco)
How Soon Is Now? -- The Smiths (Simey) -- She and I have sniped each other on this in various drafts
Sunday Bloody Sunday -- U2 (Zegras11)
Ooh La La -- Faces (Hov34)
Rock the Casbah -- The Clash (Sullie)
Brain Damage/Eclipse -- Pink Floyd (Yankee23Fan)
Don't Look Back in Anger -- Oasis (DrIanMalcolm)
Running Up That Hill -- Kate Bush (Chaz) -- Call me a sap, but the way this was used in Stranger Things hit me HARD
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds -- Elton John (Hawks64)
Head Over Heels -- Tears for Fears (Falguy)
In the Meantime -- Spacehog (Shuke)
The Killing Moon -- Echo & the Bunnymen (Zamboni)
Paint It, Black -- The Rolling Stones (MAC 32)
Flying High Again -- Ozzy Osbourne (jwb)
No One Is to Blame -- Howard Jones (Doug B)
Rock of Ages -- Def Leppard (Mrs. Rannous)

Tomorrow looks fun! (All the days look fun.) Lots of new-to-me songs and artists. In addition to that, we have:

- Two Deja Votes, including one I would consider highly unexpected. Both Deja Votes are from artists we've already seen.
- Two double-up battles between new artists to the countdown!

Will we also have Led Zeppelin?

What I am slowly realizing is how much my music tastes and loves can be divided into that '87-;97 stretch of MS through college, then the FBGs draft years. So many of these songs and artists I am into because of either somebody taking them and introducing me that way, or I stumbled on them while researching for a pick or theme. Budgie falls into that category as one that I "knew", but not really, just from Crash Course in Brain Surgery cover by Metallica. But I really got into them after stumbling upon them again for a draft. I was also joking with @krista4 that there are specific songs or artists that I associate with specific FBGs. I remember being suprised that the grumpy dude that didn't seem to like much (OH) gave Budgie a big thumbs up and praised the pick. It was this song as well. Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman has alway stuck with me for the bass and the extended awesome guitar solo.

I actually was surprised by it as well. I’m honestly most surprised by the Stones finishing there. Obviously I think they deserve it but based on what I’ve read over the years, a lot of people were not fans - a lot of it due to Mick’s vocals.

I'm catching up here after a long and exhausting but very fun Bar Mitzvah weekend. So a few thoughts.

I think Mick has about the most unique voice of any major rock-and-roll singer. There are a lot of guys who sound like Robert Plant (most of them bad, but still). A lot of Lennon-esque wailers, a lot of supple McCartney sounding types, same with the weird ethereal Pink Floyd type stuff, et cetera. Nobody sounds like Jagger. There are almost no effective covers of Stones tunes, because nobody can replicate the vocals or do something that's interesting enough to make you forget his vocals. The only exception was the very popular "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals, and they didn't do much besides that.

Gonna take this opportunity to post another hilarious scene from Walk Hard.

And you never paid for drugs, Pip. Not once.

I think the US only has the advantage in 90s alternative and hip-hop.

And 70s funk, and R&B, and 60s soul, and blues in general.

Always The Sun - The Stranglers
(new artist)
I admit I really like this one. Did not listen to the rest of the new ones yet.

Go whoever-is-playing-the-Niners!
I grew up in NJ and rooting for the NJ/NY teams (Yankees, Giants, Devils, Nets), but I’ve now been in the DC area for half my life and slowly migrated over to the DC teams (well, except I have not fully adopted the Commanders because eff Dan Snyder).

Yes, I can imagine his toxicity would turn off a lot of people. I still think the team missed an opportunity for naming with "Red Hogs," which would have allowed for a rough razorback-looking logo and paid homage to the silly fans in the pig noses and dresses.

KROQ in Los Angeles used to play “10:15 Saturday Night” every Saturday night at 10:15. That’s how I came to know and love that song.

I knew of it because it was either the second or fourth song off the Staring At The Sea cassette tape compilation I borrowed from a kid at boarding school during my one year there. I listened to "Boys Don't Cry," "10:15 Saturday Night," and "Jumping Someone Else's Train" back-to-back very often, IIRC. Or was it "Killing An Arab"? I don't recall.

As a matter of fact, I sort of picked the wrong Cure song. I was going for the memories of "Jumping Someone Else's Train," which was really the smoother sounding song when all is said and done. The bass line on it grooves, whereas "10:15 Saturday Night" is a lot more acidic in its guitar tones, pacing, and solo. I think the remastered version of "10:15..." really brings that to the forefront, whereas it was a little more muted on the original cassette version. Anyway, I liked the song enough to stick with it, so I still think it's pretty good.

So, on Don't Look Back in Anger:

I only recently realized that this is among the more well-loved songs from Oasis, but I've always loved it, and pegged it all the way back when the What's the Story Morning Glory album was released. Back then, it was Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall that were the two songs nobody could get away from, and I'd always thought this was a comparatively minor track. I know now I'm wrong about that, but the searing vocals and the progression of the song were something I'd always thought amazing.

(Separately shame on me for not realizing the 1975 and Bananarama (!) were British. Might have changed the list!

worrierking: She Does It Right - Dr. Feelgood
Cool little rock 'n roll number. Pub Rock walked so Punk could run. RIP Wilko.

I'm listening to this right now, and I forgot to mention to @worrierking that he would have seen another Dr. Feelgood song join his tomorrow, were it not for the fact that OH made a last-second switch to another artist, but it's another artist that makes worrierking happy!

Dr. Feelgood's She Does is Right is just as Eephus describes it-a cool little pub rock number. It's a favorite of mine because I came to truly appreciate Wilko Johnson as a great guitarist in the last ten years or so. In the mid 70s when all guitarists tried to be Clapton or Page, Wilko was going minimal. He became a hero of the punks for his simple, choppy rhythms and complete lack of page-like solos. He later became somewhat known for his minor role in Game of Thrones as the executioner in the early seasons.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and went on a farewell binge, recording an album with Roger Daltrey and touring with former member of The Blockheads, whom he had joined for a bit in the early 80s. Pancreatic cancer is, of course, a dire diagnosis, so he was going out in style and living while he could. After inexplicably not dying after a year or so, it was discovered that his pancreatic cancer was a rare form that is not nearly as bad as your standard pancreatic cancer and he lived until last year.

@krista4 Some Brit did a Zevon cover? :)

Some new to me favorites

Hurdy Gurdy Man - I didn't know this one by Donovan. It's far out.
I took this in G4 and at least 1 other draft.
DOES NO ONE LISTEN TO MY PICKS??!!
Well, I can't speak for other drafts - but I know damn well you didn't listen to all 178,349* songs taken in GP4 either, bub. ;)

( *yes, made up exaggerated number)

I went with Champagne Supernova yesterday, but I do love Don’t Look Back in Anger too. A handful of songs off Morning Glory that I could have gone with — such a great album.

@Pip's Invitation I was listening to some Maiden after your comment about The Trooper. I THINK you or others that might not know the band but like the song would dig most of Piece of Mind album that it came from. Listening to these playlists and the variety of artists in them made it stand out to me that many of the songs on that album aren't that far removed from bands like Deep Purple, Yes, Priest, Sabbath, and others. The openers extend to 6+ minutes and I was surprised at the hints of prog I was picking up on when listening this time as well.

Says the guy who couldn't remember one of his own picks (Nine Feet Underground).
