Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

I'm going to reveal the answers to a few earlier teasers, those that won't spoil anything still to come:

On December 24, after tabulating 15 lists, I posted that "there are two songs that have been selected that feature a current top 10 artist covering a song by another current top 10 artist." You can now see above that one of those songs was Elton John's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." The other was "Pinball Wizard," also the Elton John version, but that person later replaced that selection with another song.

I also posted that day, "Lists #11-15 had a very different feel than #1-10, with a lot more hard rock and heavy metal. Some bands I had been surprised not to see earlier finally showed up, and even did very well, as mentioned yesterday. One artist that had struck out suddenly found itself with seven votes for 154 points, while another went from zero to 117 points, and a third gained a total of 100 points from four lists." I won't identify which was which, but these three artists were Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden. One of these three was also the artist about which I had posted the prior day: "Wow. We have an artist that had zero points through lists #1-9. Just by inputting lists #10-12, this artist has garnered 132 points (yes, some people don't limit to one per artist) and leapt into 9th place."

I was tempted to fire up an alias and submit a list of 31 songs by a band (who I will not spotlight because surely some poor sap selected one of their songs in earnest).

Round 25

Every Picture Tells a Story - I love most all of Rod's 70s stuff
Tuesday Afternoon - Second favorite Moody Blues song.
Brain Damage/Eclipse - My third favorite PF song. I sang this at Karaoke once on a dare when quite intoxicated, and a foreign fella came up to me later and said in a thick Middle Eastern accent, "Thank you for singing the Pink Floyd."
Flying High Again - My favorite Ozzy solo song.
Gimme Shelter - This rotates with two others as my favorite Stones song. I like Paint it Black too, although it frightened me as a child.
Rock of Ages - Günter glieben glauchen globen
A New England - It's always good to hear Billy Bragg
Long Tall Glasses - I didn't realize that Leo sings this. Watching the video reminds me I need to get back to working on my bead necklaces.

More to come...

My daughter was listening to Chasing Cars one day and I spontaneously spit out some alternative lyrics that fit perfectly. She laughed.

"If I lay here, in the middle of traffic, would you lie with me and...get run over too?"

Rick Beato on why Head Over Heels is a great song.

Some very early teasers and answers. I'm posting these mostly because some of you made guesses at them, either publicly or via PM to me. I'm not going to post your guesses in order to protect your pride. ;) Again, these are extremely early so are not spoilers as a lot changed between the first five lists and the total of 45.

From December 21 (partial list - I'm withholding a couple of the questions as they would be spoilers):

- In addition to the Big Three, there are six additional artists that have been listed four times each. One of those was, IIRC, not listed in the guesses for top choices. This artist is currently at #5 and has three votes for the same song, which is currently the second-ranked song in the countdown.
Answers: David Bowie, The Clash, Elton John, The Who, The Smiths, Elvis Costello
The Clash – London Calling

- The current "we like you, but we don't like like you" artist has four votes accounting for only 50 total points. In contrast, the highest number of points right now (also with four votes) is 109.
Answers: Elvis Costello (50), The Beatles (109)

- On the other hand, the "when we love you, we really love you" award goes to an artist with 80 points but only three votes.
Answer: Pink Floyd

Later, from December 23, with ten lists tabulated (again, very early and would change):

- Our Big Three each have made nine of 10 lists. We have another artist that also has made nine of 10 lists – and has moved into the #4 slot as a result (The Who) - and another that has shown up on eight but is lagging in 8th place (David Bowie).

- The “when we love them we really love them” artist previously mentioned still has only shown up on five ballots, but with enough support to sit in fifth place. (Pink Floyd)

- There is a second tier forming now of seven artists currently holding 122-197 points (The Who, Pink Floyd, Elton John, The Clash, David Bowie, The Kinks, Radiohead). The next artist down from there has fewer than 100 points, including one surprising underachiever (U2).

- There is a new leader for our Ace Award (most points for an artist with only one song taken), but I expect this artist to get more songs selected. (Romeo and Juliet – Dire Straits) Then again, I would have said the same for Cheap Trick.

Mid-votes teaser and answer from January 7:

I'm just calculating again and realized we have an artist that showed up on four of the first five lists (you go, girl/guy/them!), but then only four of the next 21 lists thereafter. Did something happen a couple of weeks ago that made everyone hate them? (Elvis Costello)

Round 25

Head Over Heals - I love their singing on this song.
10:15 Saturday Night - I like the drumming on this song. I like Friday I'm in Love too. It's a fun bouncy song, which is not a common theme with The Cure. I saw them on their Disintegration tour, and I wasn't expecting their music to translate as good live, but they sounded fantastic.
Streams of Whiskey - They are a fun band
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) - What's not to like? ☮️
Head On - I love their sound.
Don't Bang the Drum - I originally had a Waterboys song listed, but it wasn't eligible. I love the instruments they use in their songs.
Ooh La La - This song reminds me of FM radio in the 70s and early 80s. I remember they would play entire albums at night.
Happy When it Rains - Again, I love their sound.

....

Some new to me favorites

Hurdy Gurdy Man - I didn't know this one by Donovan. It's far out.
Chasing Cars - I don't much about Snow Patrol. I like this, and my favorite part is the build up at the end (not when it is over).
Keep in the Dark - This song is right up my alley. I love it.
Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman - Fancy instrumentation in there. At one point I can't tell if it is a guitar or a voice or both.
Always the Sun - I think I've heard this before. I like it.
October Swimmer - Same as above.
Crystalised - Cool duet
Connection - the lead singer sorta reminds me of the singer of Romeo Void. I like this!

Songs I forgot to mention
Sunday Bloody Sunday - Great song. I love the drums in it.
I like both of the Oasis songs.
I like everything. I'm just tired of typing.

I don’t like all these new Elvis Costello fans, thinking that they’re edgy and cool. You’re not edgy or cool. Those of us who listened to the man back in the day, we’re the cool ones. You guys are just lemmings.
Not everyone of those new fans have to be a lemming.

Personally, I’m a 17-yr old China-man that had never heard of Elvis C prior to these drafts. Now, having heard him, I don’t feel like a lemming. I strut — like a Travolta-esque strut — I, sir, am not a lemming.

Maybe you think so. But you’ll never be one of us. You’ll never be a member of the club.

Seven-Point Selections:

New Binky the Doormat:

Tuesday Afternoon - The Moody Blues
(new artist)
I love this song too.

The Moodys were one of my dad’s favorite bands and therefore I also loved them.

Their’s was the only concert that I ever saw with my dad. He was 40-something and I was in high school.
I had a similar experience except it was Arlo Guthrie
(and it was awesome, he did a whole one man band thing)
(sorry, not British)

I think these are two of the more likable teams and fan bases but I am also riding with Joe.

I grew up a Bengals fan (and survived) but am rooting for the Bills the past couple of years. If the Bengals win, I'll still be happy, though. As you said, both very likable teams, as are the Chiefs.
My cocksucking* internet went out in the 85th minute of the Arsenal-Man U game, tied 2-2, so I didn’t get to see that finish.

And it’s still out so I’ve missed the first half of the Bills-Bengals game.

Really hope it’s back for the Cowboys-9’ers game.

Twelve unfamiliar songs today among a lot of great old favorites.

worrierking: She Does It Right - Dr. Feelgood
Cool little rock 'n roll number. Pub Rock walked so Punk could run. RIP Wilko.

titusbramble: October Swimmer - JJ72
Enjoyed this one a lot. Never heard of the band before. I'd definitely like to hear more from them.

timschochet: High On a Hill - Kate Rusby
A rare appearance of a banjo in this thread. There's a thread from English Folk to American Bluegrass and Country. A thoroughly lovely song with harmonies that reminded me of Richard & Linda Thompson a bit. The horns that entered toward the end took things up a notch.

jwb: Flying High Again – Ozzy Osbourne
Not sure if I've heard this before so I'll err on the side of caution. Great guitar song.

Dr. Octopus: Always The Sun - The Stranglers
This one sounded vaguely familiar but never would have guessed the Stranglers. They were another band who inconveniently got associated with Punk at the time. RIP Jet Black

KarmaPolice: Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman - Budgie
Budgie was big in Milwaukee during the early 70s for some reason. Cool song with a classic Hard Rock sound.

Mt. Man: Comedown – Bush
Used to play the album a lot so I knew the song but not the title. I normally really like Albini's live production sound but I've always preferred Bush's debut Sixteen Stone to the Albini produced follow-up. Langer & Winstanley added a little sweetness to the guitar and vocal sound that flattered the band.

landrys hat: Keep In The Dark - Temples
This was one of my favorite albums in 2014 and it was nice to hear them again. The band dropped most of the psychedelic retroisms on the records that followed which was a shame.

Doug B: No One Is To Blame – Howard Jones
Hey, I remembered the tune from earlier in the thread but apparently haven't quite gotten the title down yet.

Chaos34: Happy When It Rains - The Jesus And Mary Chain
I've always admired JAMC's ability to fuse Pop melodies and noisy guitars. Great band, great song.

Oliver Humanzee: How I Wrote Elastic Man - The Fall
I recognized the song from BBC6 where the guitar player Marc Riley is now a DJ. Liked the song as I have with other songs by the artist but they're another band with an intimidatingly huge discography.

Family outing on a Sunday

Mrs. Eephus: Don't Bang The Drum - The Waterboys
When I asked her why she picked this particular Waterboys song, Mrs. E said it took her back to a concert we went to together back in 1985. She remembered how the band and audience fed off the same energy and how much she danced. She's much better than I am at conjuring memories--she never really smoked weed and my dominant left brain is full up with statistics and trivia. I remembered it as being a great show but that was about it so I fell down an Internet rabbit hole that led me to a bunch of photos taken at the show.

Don't Bang the Drum was the opening number but what I found really interesting is that the band's best loved song (no spotlighting but it has over 100M more Spotify streams than Mrs. E's song) wasn't in the setlist that night even though it appeared on the album they were promoting.

@ditkaburgers: Connection - Elastica
This was another one that 3-year old ditkaburgers choreographed moves for. I remember her steps for the chorus involved windmilling her arms and getting down on one knee. It was really cute; you should have been there.

We were talking about the band a few weeks ago which led us to wondering whatever happened to Justine Frischmann. It turns out she's a visual artist (not a surprise) married a Meteorology professor at UC-Davis (big surprise). Well as the old song goes, I don't understand how the last card is played/But somehow the vital connection is made.

Eephus: The Light Pours Out Of Me – Magazine
Post-Punk is probably my favorite sub-genre of Rock music. Power Pop may give it a run for it's money but I definitely am drawn to music beginning with P. Post-Punk broke in the UK when I was 18. Global trends didn't travel as fast in those days so I was 19 by the time it reached Madison, Wisconsin.

Magazine's debut album is one of the seminal works of the genre. There are songs on the record that are more-or-less standard Punk but you can feel the band pushing against the boundaries and exploring other musical possibilities. Even today, "The Light Pours Out of Me" has a singlar sound. The pulse of the rhythm section combines with Howard Devoto's menacing vocal and the broken shards of guitar from the great Post-Punk guitarist John McGeoch.

worrierking: She Does It Right - Dr. Feelgood
Cool little rock 'n roll number. Pub Rock walked so Punk could run. RIP Wilko.

I'm listening to this right now, and I forgot to mention to @worrierking that he would have seen another Dr. Feelgood song join his tomorrow, were it not for the fact that OH made a last-second switch to another artist, but it's another artist that makes worrierking happy!
