Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Is there any other resource you guys are using other than Wiki and Google to vet these? I've tried for a couple groups to find information on members but can't find anything.
I think @Dr. Octopus had another resource, but that's all I've used.
I've only used Wiki and then google searches based on names from there that weren't hyperlinked. Sorry.

Luckily the lists posted already are great starts. @Eephus linked liner notes for Dire Straits earlier. There may be a site for that - or maybe that was a simple search as well.

Discogs has a lot of credits information
That's the one I recalled.
More happy news: Mumford & Sons' Marcus Mumford was born in the US, but to English parents.
Indeed happy news when I found that yesterday, unhappy news, I thought it was already known. Could have sworn I read they were A-Ok in the thread.

I just did a search for "Mumford" in this thread, and they had not been previously mentioned. Perhaps you're mixing us up with another 31 songs from the British Isles selected by middle-aged dummies thread.
Well, my memory sucks :lmao: But glad they are eligible.
It may have been in the American thread. At one point there was a lot of talk about eligibility for this list.

I don't want to pick on anyone, but here's an example of something that is extremely unhelpful to me.

As I mentioned, when your list comes in, I'll ask you the following questions:

1. Have you or anyone you know checked your list against the ineligibles and partial ineligibles listed in post #3 PLUS checked any other bands not listed there? If not, please do so before returning to this PM.
If yes to #1:
2. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure it is in song title then artist name format?
If yes to #2:
3. Have you or anyone you know checked your list to ensure that your your favorite of the 31 songs is at the top of your list, and the songs are in descending order of preference from there?

I don't care who you are or how much I "trust" that you have vetted, I'm still going to ask those questions.

When the answer to the first question is "I checked [names of two bands] and I don't think there's anything else even questionable," then that's neither the "yes" answer I requested nor is it useful.

And it's even less helpful when I scan down your list and immediately find one that is ineligible. Like, not even "what about Charley Charles" ineligible but "literally every member is an American" ineligible.
GTFO. All right people, fess up who sent this!!

Yikes! It was me. And the band in question was Sixpence None the Richer. I totally screwed up on that one, I just assumed they were British, never even bothered to check. What a doofus.

I wouldn't have outed you! :lmao: But thanks for fessing up. It must have been the "sixpence" part.

 what was my thought when I read that.
Good on you for admitting it, Tim. Too funny, and exactly the thing I fear doing.

There are entire scenes where the Brits have little to no presence, which makes the winnowing process a little easier IMO. But still hard.
Yeah, there is that. The major artists have such a high concentration that it's hard to chop them down a lot, but on the other hand, the jazz, funk, R&B and hip hop scenes are completely out of the picture here, much to their detriment.

Hot Chocolate jumped to mind. I love Every 1's a Winner. Ineligible though - singer was born in Jamaica.
Technically, isn't Jamaica a British Isle?

As discussed ad nauseam here and in the prior thread, we're not including colonies or protectorates. See post #1.
Do I need to read all that stuff?

I'm informed that Clive Chaman of the second iteration of Jeff Beck Group (1971-73) was born in Trinidad and Tobago, making the band partially ineligible. I have been unable to find information on his parentage.

(makes note to add “We’re An American Band” and “God Bless The USA” to my British Isles playlist )

You people and your residency rules can pry Bananarama from my warm lotioned hands!
This reminds me: Annabella Lwin, I believe, makes Bow Wow Wow ineligible. Born in Burma, Burmese father & English mother. It has to be both parents British for overseas births, correct?

Well, I sorta didn't want to get into this, but for British citizenship, one parent is enough, so I've been looking at it that way unofficially hoping it wouldn't come up officially. Now I'll make it official - one British parent is enough.

How about a dad who left one coutrry run by the British to go to another country run by the British who had a kid with weird teeth and 4 octave range?

I couldn't help it with the time of the year and all ... and it's legitimately a nostalgic favorite British track for me:

Is Band Aid ineligible because Jody Watley and 'Kool' Bell (from Kool & The Gang) are part of the backing chorus? :D

Omg, that's a weird one to evaluate. Let's say it's eligible. It's Christmastime after all, as everyone may or may not know.
It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time
Fun facts -- the first lines were written for David Bowie, but he couldn't make the sessions due to other commitments, so who-dat Paul Young got to lead things off

There are people around here who get super triggered by some parts of this song but I think it's good clean family fun

The 45 of this had a little greeting track by everybody, on the B side, now available to stream https://open.spotify.com/track/4MRIP0K2cnN48gnp71VIKs?si=f9ae7c1145b44d92

I missed this earlier, sorry… thanks for the invite but I just don’t have the time lately to commit to these big fellas.. fun to keep an eye on!

Hey @Gr00vus , you've been hanging out here. You in? I know I strong-armed you into the U2 countdown and would be happy to do that here.
I'm thinking about it, seems like a daunting task. Also I have a suspicion my list might devolve down to my 31 favorite Bowie songs. Pretty sure he'll qualify for residency. I'll let my subconscious chew on it and see if it formulates anything to regurgitate in your direction. What's the cut off date?

We had a snowstorm here today, which is crazy. Until a few years ago, Seattle area rarely had any snow or went below freezing temps, but the past few years we've had 1-2 big* snows every year.

Our house is at the top of a very steep hill, and our street is closed just to the West of our house, at the point where it starts to lead into the big dropoff. Unfortunately for OH, his workplace is right at the bottom of that hill, and unlike many who live farther away, he really has no excuse not to make it in. So he snowshoed down to work this morning.

*4-5" would qualify as "big" here. The Chicago in me scoffs at that, but there it is.

I will be on autopick. This is not the typical "by the seat of my pants" draft I am accustomed to.
It’s actually not a draft. You PM your 31 picks to Krista and she unveils them.
Thanks. I dropped in for some camaraderie and diversion. I doubt I made more than 30-40 posts this year and I'm tired tired of spending way too much time on stressful things..This format sounds fun.
Its not at all what I expected when I joined, assuming it was my mental image of a FFA draft. I'm just not used to hardly coming to the FFA anymore and keeping up on anything. I think it might enhance my life if I started hanging out again. Still lots of good people still hang around.
I imagine I can find what I need to know in the first few pages to get his done in a day or two, if that's not too late.
Lots of you have my phone, so feel free to text or call (lol) if I need shepherding herding..

You have plenty of time, my dear friend. Our deadline is January 13. If you need anything, text/email/PM me.

There's a Freddie Mercury museum in Stone Town, Tanzania

It's the 19th ranked attraction in Stone Town according to Tripadvisor

Oh wow, not a good showing. I understand why "Cheetah Island" would be #1, but to lose to "Prison Island" is rough.

Lest anyone think I look down on anyone for not knowing where people are from, I learned in this endeavo(u)r that PJ Harvey is English. :bag:
