Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

What's everyone's traditional New Year's menu?

Mine is black-eyed peas, cornbread, and greens (it doesn't matter what kind, but it'll be spinach this year). BE peas are done and I'll make the cornbread/greens later.
Black-eyed peas, collards, corn bread, and pork.
I couldn't find collards. Is there a shortage? For pork, I fried up some bacon and threw that in with the BE peas.

I had someone else look for them last week (maybe Thursday?) - had Covid and didn't go out myself. She said she couldn't find them in any grocery store.
Maybe the recent deep freeze killed the latest harvest from your local farmers.

2010s neo-grunge band Yuck is ineligible because the bass player was born in Japan. I drafted this song in a 2000s song draft many moons ago.

Foals, another 2000s band on my long list is ineligible because the singer was born in Greece.

One you can add to post #3 is Scritti Politti -- their classic lineup was a trio featuring two Americans and British singer Green Gartside.

Just to confirm, are the first two above wholly ineligible and the third is partially ineligible? Once I have the info, I'll add to post #3. Thanks!

Since everyone is picking their favorite Queen song I'll play.....Don't Stop Me Now. Shaun of the Dead is one of favorite movies and the scene with this song is great.

I don't know much from Queen and should listen more some day. The song you named is my favorite, though.

simey and I were just talking about this a little bit yesterday. That sounds like a proper Southern New Year's. Where I grew up, we have pork and sauerkraut, with a dime in the sauerkraut, which I think was supposed to bring good luck? Some German tradition or whatnot.

Black-eyed peas, collards, corn bread, and pork.

8lb pork butt roasted with 6 jars bottled sauerkraut,

real mashed potatoes

fresh baked bread

The countdown with my idiots started today. I’m not going to list results until we start here and then I’ll just give their four from each corresponding day.

No shocking picks and Chap is playing it straight (so far). We have another text chain member, Glenn, give a “Glenny” award for his favorite of the five. Doug got off to a fast start in the Glenny Chase.

Are they playing by the same vetting rules?

We’re not quite as diligent - last time Van Halen and a few others got through - but same “rule”.

Black-eyed peas and collards for Mrs. Eephus' heritage. Pickled herring and mochi (not together) for my father and mother's side respectively.

I didn’t dig all that deep into Scritti Politti’s ouvre. The band has gone through many members since the 1980s, and I’m not sure if they ever had an all-Brits line-up. Have to check later.

I'll just put them in partially ineligible and note that people should check. No need for you to put a ton of time into this if no one is planning to take them outside of their "classic" lineup.

Hold on! Scritti Politti was already in my post #3! Apparently I also do not read my posts.

Huh, I was unaware of these traditional southern New Year's foods. Mom was Italian as can be and a wonderful cook. New Year's Eve was usually her putting out pizzas laced with a Sunday gravy that finished cuts of pork and her meatballs. New Year's day was finger foods, nuts, crackers, chips, dips, charcuterie, antipasto, mini meatball sandwiches, parades and bowl games. I'd give anything to take a fork and stab a cold meatball from that sauce in the fridge and eat it like a popsicle.

It's been six months since wikkid/Dale died, and I'm texting with his sister today. She told me that they're doing ok, but they "miss him and do not laugh as much." That really hit me. 💔
Tell her that none of us do.

But on the positive side of that, he was a bright spot to a lot of people he didn't even know...even if we didn't understand half of what he was talking about!

This is our tradition, but my wife also prepares spatzle and applesauce from scratch. We go the KISS route with the kraut, but add chopped bacon. I also prepare a salad for myself to help push through the devoured charcuterie board from the night before.

What about the Highlander soundtrack? I love the movie and Queen doing the soundtrack is like icing on the cake
Hence my recommendation of A Kind of Magic. The songs from Highlander are on there.
I did not realize this! I like Queen, but I've never had their albums except maybe a greatest hits CD.....Thank you!
If you haven't seen Queen at Live Aid, you should. No one wants to follow this.

While it could never compare to Queen’s performance, Extreme’s performance at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was pretty amazing.

Hoppin' John is a traditional New Years dish, so good on ya.

I was doing a gigantic fried chicken thing every NYD, but since we moved, haven't done it the last two years. So today, it was bagels. Great, amazing, fresh, NYC bagels.

I was perusing my Neil countdown thread to find recommendations for turnjose7, and I came across this post from wikkid, which was very ... him.

Congratulations on a lovely job, Pip. Neil Young is the kind of musician i would like personally, but i find his music either heartbreaking beautiful or dentist-drill annoying with heavy emphasis on the latter. Plus, my i'll put my people-who-don't-like-Neil vocal imitation of him up against anybody's. A girl once broke up with me in the 80s (literally kicked me out of her car on the Palisades Parkway) because i'd sing along like Neil Young to every Journey song that came on the radio. In addition, my best friend has been in a weekend band for 20 yrs with a topflight alcoholic guitar player (as crunchy on an SG as anyone i've ever heard) who, once he gets hammered, makes EVERY song - from the Beatles to Counting Crows - sound like a Neil Young jam. So i'm too comfortable being desultory to your favorite artist to have kept from making my participation a ridicule loop. But' i've audited your course here and learned a lot and will refer back and learn more. Thank you.

Missed getting to do this as my MIL came down with Covid. She always does what you have listed as her "lucky" meal. She's a great cook and adds in other stuff so hate we missed it but thankfully (and more importantly) she's on the mend.

I've only received one list in the last seven days, though that's understandable due to holidays. With fewer than 50% in so far, I'm starting to fear a blitz at the last minute! It'll be fine in any case - the more the merrier. This is the ***OFFICIAL*** reminder that you have 10 more days to submit your list. You don't want OH's kazoo bands dominating the countdown! :)

Nobody is going to read this. Better quote it...

I've begun the great cull of my long list which has grown to an unwieldy 134 songs. ditkaburgers asked me yesterday what the deadline was. Mrs. Eephus was interested before the holidays but I'd put her down as questionable now.

ANNOUNCE:

For the first time in middle-aged dummy history, in addition to a regular contest (TBD) that @Val Rannous has kindly agreed to compile again, I am going to run a Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111. The Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111 will comprise 10 multiple-choice questions, so not much thinking involved. You could even get your dog or cat or parrot or ferret or your stupid kid to choose for you! (video encouraged)

Also for the first time in middle-aged dummy history, the winner of the Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111 will get not only a significant donation to charity, but will also receive a personalized gift to enjoy themselves. The gift will depend upon who the winner is and what I can come up with, and can also, at winner's option, involve additional charitable or personal donations to anyone you choose, or just some fun ****.

The questions for the Super-Awesome-Mega-Contest!!!111 will be posted later tonight or, depending upon my mood and how much wine I've had, tomorrow. I did have some questions in mind a week ago and have forgotten them. Hope to get the creative juices going again tonight.

Please let me know of any questions in the meantime, or as soon as @jwb bumps this post.

Aw bummer, I was really hoping for Mrs. Ee to be in. What can we do to get her to "probable"?

:lmao: Brilliant!

I'm hoping to have my list in the next few days. I'm most of the way there, and have a lot of free time Wednesday through Saturday.
We'll see if my plans succeed or gang agley, though.

1. This sounds awesome.
2. That last bolded means that you need to do it tonight if wine is involved. ;)

For the "regular" contest, I'm thinking favorite band and favorite song are going to be too narrow, since we have a Big Three that will make the artist bit a little too easy. Instead I'd propose that it be to name the other seven artists to fill out the top 10. Any objections?

That's fine, as long as there aren't any gosh darn kazoo bands.

I was listening to my playlist the other day, and I had to do a double take and wonder if one of my selections something that OH was listening to. :scared:

All right, three votes are good enough for me.

For the ***OFFICIAL*** contest, please send to @Val Rannous your list of the seven (7) artists that you believe will round out the top 10 along with Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Rolling Stones. Also include the song that you believe will receive the most points, other than songs from the Big Three. The winner will be the one who guesses the highest number of artists correctly. TO COME The tiebreaker will be the person whose seven choices score the most total points. If we need another tiebreaker after that, it will be arbitrarily and capriciously decided by me.

Deadline is 11:59 EST on Sunday, January 15.

Winner gets a donation to charity of his/her choice in an amount to be determined by me based on whether I have a job at the time, but in no case less than $250.

I'm on the job now. Just gonna format my list for you.
