This is my favorite of Winehouse's because of how well it swings. Most of her other hits have a heaviness to the beat that isn't as conducive to movement as this one is. I also love the horn arrangement.

I'm surprised we came this far without these guys. And I imagine I won't be the last. I just find I like this one a bit more than the title track of what is an otherwise ridiculous soundtrack. Very few movies hit the moment dead on the nose, but this one did, and you just can't forget the Bee Gees after this, even though on the first listen - and maybe the 30th - it's hard to understand half of what the hell Barry is saying. The production on this is so damned smooth, and lovely, and boy it's just amazing. The strings, that wah-wah sound of the guitar that comes in about a minute in, and that really clean drum beat that comes in there is just fantastic. Disco remains one of the most maligned musical genres.

Plus, it helps if you like to dance, and I love to dance. Travolta fills me with such envy, man. (As for the movie, one downside is its really nasty treatment of women, which is pretty tough to take - it was then, and even more so now.)

This was the first one I thought I had to pre-emptively comment on; this group is pretty enlightened and doesn't reflexively hate too much, so I'm not concerned about that.

Grew up in Central Jersey (but back when there were 2 area codes, I was 201, so, N Jersey).

Somewhere in this thread I said changes were made to my list because I felt obligated to certain songs/bands that I was leaving out. Black Sabbath was one. I have a story. Briefly as I can. My bro is 69. He went from muscle bound, crew cut wearing, record setting HS running back, all-american boy - to war protesting, long haired, bearded, radical college hippy in one year. I idolized him and the change freaked me out. My friends called my dad Santini. He was patriotic, pro war, and military to the bone, nttawwt. The only war 9 year old me cared about was the one between them. Sabbath and a long list of 60s protest music was banned from our house. The day big bro was cut off, kicked out, and told not to come back, I ran out to his brown yellow and gold van and begged him to change back. He looked at his little bro, sighed and said, get in. He drove to the neighborhood park softly explaining Vietnam to me and why it was so important to him. Then he defended the music they were fighting about. Spoke these lyrics to me, explaining them. Played the song on 8 track through big cabinet speakers he'd wired to the back of that van. And I heard the war in those dark guitars.

addendum: today he's a proud christian conservative and my hair is on my shoulders.

Yeah, lots of Bee Gees discussion in that thread. I think the Bee Gees are in that Duran Duran realm in that it wasn't cool to like them back when we were younger, but always (if secretly) liked them and appreciated their talent. And even more so now.

One could make the case that the Bee Gees are as creative as any artist in pop music history. Or, I could and will if asked nicely. And I'm an all-in fanboy of both the Beatles and Stevie Wonder.

David Bowie often gets described as a musical chameleon. He was, but he had nothing on the Bee Gees.

I know why their 2nd-half-of-the-70s stuff got dissed. Same reason as that stupid "Disco Sucks" debacle happened in Chicago. Joe closed down the PSF for good reason, so I'll leave it there.

Never a "guilty pleasure" for me. I stopped feeling guilty about what I liked around age 14.

As I mentioned then, most of my favorite songs of theirs aren't eligible in this draft, and ultimately I decided to "save" them for the catch-all. I get the reference you're making, but careers didn't really overlap. Mansun were basically done after their third album in 2000, and I didn't see Kasabian live until, looking at setlist.fm, 2003, before they were big (or could play live, for that matter) supporting the Cooper Temple Clause

I’ve seen 3 Boorman films in my life: Deliverance, Excalibur, and Hope and Glory. I enjoyed them all. I think they should all be watched on a very big screen, as they’re quite cinematic films.

He also made Point Blank which is good and Zardoz which is not.
