Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Enjoyed that one too. I was just looking up their Wikipedia page, and it lists Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley) as a band member from 2001-2005 on drums/vocals. That’s got to be someone just messing with Wikipedia, right?

(Image capture)

I bought @ditkaburgers a "Mrs. Rupert Grint" t-shirt as a joke one Christmas.

She wore it but inside the house only.

Continuing my Stones marathon from last night, I have listened to these four consecutive albums:

Beggar’s Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main Street

This is some run. I know there are a few other classic rock bands with album runs that can match it (particularly the other two members of what Krista calls “the big three”) but personally I think this is the best.

There was also a top-tier live album and the Through the Past, Darkly compilation released during this run.

Reading through a lot of Pip's posts it does more now occur to me that Pip: music :: Me: Movies.
Interesting that you start your LZ run with III, I would have begun it with their first album. The Led Zeppelin run is the longest (not necessarily the best).

I was extending the earlier parameters of 4 in a row, so going with the peak, given Presence is a step down from the others. But sure. Then again - and again, Jersey - Bruce's run goes from The WIld, The Innocent/Born to Run/Darkness/The River/Nebraska/Born in the USA/Tunnel of Love, so that's 7 in a row.
I like selected songs from Nebraska and Tunnel of Love, but IMO they’re not overall of the same quality of the other albums you named.

Tunnel of Love, to me, reaches a higher level of clarity the longer you're married. But I can accept the idea that it's a step down from the others, though I still think it's brilliant. It's nowhere near the decline in Human Touch/Lucky Town, which would have made one very solid-but-not-great album instead of one lousy one and one decent one.

Nebraska belongs with all of the others, IMHO.

♥️ Twenty-Point Selections:

Pulled an Eephus and walked the dogs while listening - they are exhausted.

Pip’s Invitation:
20th Century Man - The Kinks - Don't know The Kinks except for the "major" Chalk - so this was great and hopefully will make me take a deeper dive

titusbramble: Ashes To Ashes - David Bowie - :moneybag:

Just Win Baby: All I Need – Radiohead - So glad In-Rainbows is getting some love. I wore that album out when it came out (actually paid for it -$15 I think, as you could "pay what you wanted" - I loved it so much and wanted Radiohead to continue to make great music.

Don Quixote: Baba O’Riley - The Who - So I Deja Vued this one, so I can talk about it, I know it's chalk, but my goodness what an anthem.

MAC_32: The Irish Rover - The Pogues - :oldunsure: (bookmarking for St. Patrick's Day?)

timschochet: I’ve Got A Feeling - The Beatles - Love screaming Paul, love when John enters, this is maybe top 10 Beatles for me, but who knows, ranking them would be crazy ;)

jwb: Starman – David Bowie - :moneybag:

DrIanMalcolm: The Killing Moon - Echo & The Bunnymen - Such a haunting lovely song

Dr. Octopus: This Charming Man - The Smiths - So saw The Killers with my daughters back in Sept. and Johnny Marr opened, played some Smiths, some of his solo; then he came out with Brandon for the Encore and did this song and two Killers' songs (Spaceman and Brightside. It was a treat and I'm glad I got to see part of the Smiths

KarmaPolice: Glory Box – Portishead - "Hello children" - Chef

Manster: Space Oddity - David Bowie - :moneybag:, have been asking my wife what her favorite from all the heavy hitters and this was her's from Bowie

scorchy: Children's Story - Slick Rick - For the longest time the "other" song he is most famous for was not on Spotify (studio version) it might be the only song I can nail rapping (no spoilers)

Andy Dufresne: The Promise - When In Rome - Love this at the end of Napoleon Dynamite (me and daughters go to movie when they were younger) Sturgill does an amazing cover - makes me tear up, just something about his voice

higgins: Would I Lie To You - Eurythmics - So good, glad it has been picked a few times

The Dreaded Marco: Queen ***** - :moneybag: David Bowie - what a great album

simsarge: If I Fell - The Beatles - The Beatles were pretty good, there I said it.

Mt. Man/zamboni: Love, Reign O'er Me - The Who - So powerful, Pleased but surprised it's getting more love than some of the other heavy hitters

landrys hat: The House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals - Great song, I felt like it was used in more Movies/Shows than it is. Only a few according to this site

Westerberg: Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand - I took it 29th and I think @scorchy took it a round before me, so I don't own it.... :kicksrock:

Eephus: Love Is The Drug - Roxy Music - Always thought this would make a good Clash song

rockaction: Can’t You Hear Me Knocking – The Rolling Stones - Probably my favorite Stones song for 2 minutes and 40 seconds - then it gets weird

falguy: Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison - so good, my wife's favorite Van song (she has brown eyes, duh)

Doug B: Teacher - Jethro Tull - not big on flutes, but this I like and probably my fav from them.

Ilov80s: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys - Great album, I like another on this album better, but I'm not mard this was picked

Val Rannous: White Wedding - Part 1 - Billy Idol - All Idol chalk is so good and listen to them all without getting tired of them.

Chaos34: A Town Called Malice - The Jam - Surprised this took this long to show up, I own the other Jam song; it's about the only one I do own

Zegras11: The Song Remains The Same - Led Zeppelin - :moneybag:

AAABatteries: Land Of Confusion – Genesis - Great song, disturbing video

Mrs. Eephus: Gold - Spandau Ballet - So good, what a voice and he really shows it off in this song

ditkaburgers: If You Leave - O M D - Pretty in Pink soundtrack, instantly transports me to the mid 80s

cosjobs: A Day In The Life – The Beatles - Ringo's drumming on this, wow.

krista4: The Modern Leper - Frightened Rabbit - I didn't give this a proper listen the first time (sry @Ilov80s ) glad it was picked again

Scooter I Missed Again – Phil Collins - Glad Solo Phil is seeing some love, even if it is from one of the other idiots

Jeb The Modern World – The Jam - mandatory Jam upvote

Chap The Lemon Song – Led Zeppelin - 1f34b.png Used to skip this song when younger in my Zep phase. I wasn't very bright...

I can't pick just one fave four album run but the Stones one Tim mentioned is hard to beat.

Floyd: Dark Side thru the Wall.....gun to my head, this is probly the one I choose.

Metallica: Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, Master, ....And Justice......the Four Horsemen if you will

The first four Modest Mouse albums is a killer run as well, imo.

So with regard to my pick of “I’ve Got a Feeling”- this has been my personal favorite Beatles song for years and years. But last year when I went to see Paul McCartney at SoFi stadium he performed it with a video of John Lennon singing from the Peter Jackson film. Which was both kind of creepy and really cool at the same time. 80 year old Paul also struggled to sing his part with any real power so that was a little sad as well.

I usually list Floyd's run as well.

As much as I love them, Radiohead doesn't get there because of Pablo and Amnesiac.

I'm pretty sure it's been a shutout for the Stock, Waterman and Aitken Pop factory that placed dozens of hits on the UK charts in the 80s and 90s including "Never Gonna Give You Up". The only Bananarama song drafted so far was produced by the team of Jolley & Swain who were also behind the glass for today's Spandau Ballet song.

Another quintuple-up from a non-Big 3 artist tomorrow! And this one is five different songs, including three that are brand new to the countdown. Another artist has a triple-up of all new songs as well.

We will also have two Deja Votes, including one from a song that is making its debut on the countdown.

Pip’s Invitation:

20th Century Man - The Kinks
(new song)

There are a squillion different directions you could go with The Kinks because of the high quality of their output and the vast differences in sound of their various eras. This song, the opener to and first single from 1971's Muswell Hillbillies, is one of Ray Davies' best social commentaries ("the 20th century took it all away from me", "this is the edge of insanity") and one of their most unique tunes musically, featuring a driving acoustic guitar-based arrangement that explodes into a frenzy of organ solos by John Gosling. By the time I was listening to FM radio, it was getting some airplay but not a ton, so that has kept it fresh for me.

Year Of The Cat – Al Stewart 🐱
(duplicate - second vote)

I ranked this at 264 in my top 1000 thread. It would obviously be much higher (Binky you know the deal) now. It seems any time I'm on Youtube looking at songs or preparing to post another song in that thread, this is sitting there on the right side of the screen with other suggestions, and I end up listening to it. I probably should have even had it 6-7 spots higher (Binky come on) in this list.

I was debating putting zamboni in the “Special Shout Out” category. But that felt a bit tacky, even though it would’ve been completely tongue-in-cheek. Still, obvious high-five zamboni’s way for the Deja Vote!

#12s
Recognized by title alone: 23
Sounded familiar: 5
Knew from this countdown: 4
Didn't know: 10

Special Shout Out: Land of Confusion (AAABatteries) - I’m not alone in mostly remembering this song for the video featuring puppets, right?

Selected Favorites:
All I Need (Just Win Baby)
The Promise (Andy Dufrense)
My Oh My (Mrs. Rannous)
Love is the Drug (Eephus)
A Town Called Malice (Chaos34)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
All Men Are Liars (worrierking) - I certainly didn’t expect a song (partially) bashing Rick Astley on this list.
I’m Going Home (MisterCIA)
I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (ilov80s)
Gold (Mrs. Eephus) - Yes, this is a repeat, but I’m counting it here to share more love.

worrierking:

All Men Are Liars - Nick Lowe
(new song)

Musically this sounds like Buddy Holly. I can't even begin to speculate what Holly would have thought of Rick Astley.

Just Win Baby:

All I Need – Radiohead
(new song)

I am very much in the minority among my friends, but I was not enthusiastic about the direction In Rainbows took Radiohead. For the most part I didn't think the songs were there -- many of the tracks seemed more like vehicles for experimentation as opposed to songs. That being said, there are two tunes on it that I absolutely adore, and this is one of them.

timschochet:

I’ve Got A Feeling - The Beatles
(new song)

I ranked this #14 in the Beatles countdown and it's one I get very emotional about, including when I saw the clip of Paul virtually duetting on it with John. When I got the Beatles' entire catalog on CD for Christmas or birthday when I was in college, there were several songs I was drawn to because they were absolute genius and didn't seem to be recognized as such compared to their more popular tracks. This was one. Others included And Your Bird Can Sing and I'm Only Sleeping. (All three of those made my top 25.)
Mister CIA:

I'm Going Home (Woodstock Version) - Ten Years After
(new song)

This is the moment when blues-rock morphed into "boogie". The scene in the Woodstock film has always been mesmerizing to me.

simsarge:

If I Fell - The Beatles
(new song)

I ranked this #88 in the Beatles countdown. One of their best early ballads. (My ranking goes out to 98 -- that's what I amassed when trying to get to 64.)
Eephus:

Love Is The Drug - Roxy Music
(new song)

Love the Siren-album synergy from the Eephuses.

rockaction:

Can’t You Hear Me Knocking – The Rolling Stones
(new song)

I completely adore the instrumental coda. IMO Mick Taylor's best performance with them. Was thrilled to see it played at my one Stones concert in 2002, with Ron Wood handling Taylor's leads. Sometimes this is my #1 Stones song. Was that the case the day I made my list? We'll see.

MAC_32:

The Irish Rover - The Pogues
(new song)

IMO the best of the tweedleedee Irish songs we've had so far (I don't count Fairytale of New York in this category.)

Doug B:

Teacher - Jethro Tull
(duplicate – second vote)

Didn't comment on this the first time it was picked. It's one of my favorite Tull songs -- mainly for Martin Barre's guitar playing, but it's got a great structure and some of the best use of flute that the band did. The US version of Benefit is a monstrous record and arguably their best.

There are actually two versions of this song. The US album version is the better one and the one that got radio play. A less-heavy but still good version was released as the B-side of the standalone single Witches' Promise. It didn't see album release until the 20 Years of Jethro Tull box set.

Chaos34:

A Town Called Malice - The Jam
(new song)

I see The Jam, I upvote. @krista4 @falguy there's no "A" in the title.

Zegras11:

The Song Remains The Same - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

I ranked this #9 in Anarchy's countdown. My friend ranked it #25.
Oliver Humanzee:

At Home He Is A Tourist - Gang of Four
(new song)

As with most OH picks, I have not heard this before, but  at the song title.

Mrs. Eephus:

Gold - Spandau Ballet
(duplicate – second vote)

A Ditkaburgers-Mrs. Eephus double-up. Did they dance to this one in the '90s?

CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING v. The Rolling Stones

I picked it for Uruk and Just Win Baby.

In all seriousness, when you guys were discussing this song, I'd already picked it out. Good work, Uruk, per usual. Us music freaks were definitely picking this song somewhere. The extended jam is the bee's knees!
On many of their songs from this era, the Stones (especially Jagger) are screwing around too much for my taste. They're not screwing around here. This song shows how good they could be - not just the instrumental portion, but the "proper" section too.

Of the Big Three, the Beatles at least match it.

Stevie Wonder beats it.

Yeah, Stevie probably beats it.

Zep gets close with III/IV/Houses/Physical Graffiti. The Beatles probably exceed it, honestly, with Help/Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt Pepper/White Album.

Bruce? Might be my Jersey bias here, but I think I'd take Born to Run/Darkness/The River/Nebraska/Born in the USA over most comers.

Dr. Octopus did a Stones countdown https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...-four-musketeers-get-their-ya-yas-out.775791/, as Krista had done with the Beatles before (and I did with Neil Young later -- you saw the Facebook version of that).

Anarchy99 (not a participant in the current exercises) last year ran a Zeppelin vote/countdown in kind of the same format as these ones. https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...evee-breaks-from-led-zeppelin-iv-1971.802661/

Dunno if a Stevie, Bruce or Beatles covers exercise has been done. Before the pandemic I mostly stuck to the Shark Pool and didn't come to the FFA much. Others would have a better idea.

No Stevie draft or countdown (that would be a fun one), but @Uruk-Hai did have an official Stevie thread.

And I know fewer people are interested in this subject matter, but I think I did a much better job on my post-Beatles Beatles countdown than I did my original Beatles countdown. I worked much harder on the second countdown, giving a lot more history, and organized it much better.

Stevie draft would be pretty fantastic, honestly.

Reading through a lot of Pip's posts it does more now occur to me that Pip: music :: Me: Movies.
I'm pretty lazy, but let me think on this a bit. A Stevie draft wouldn't get near the amount of participation that other single-artist drafts have here, so formatting would be important. I'll happily take suggestions on how to set it up.

@krista4 thanks for linking that thread. It ran out of gas (see above about someone being lazy). It should surprise no one that wikkid had the best posts in it.

New Binky the Doormat:

Holidays In The Sun - Sex Pistols
(new song)

It's the first song off of their only proper album and it's a clue for what's in store on the rest of it. If ever the dichotomy of the commercialism of West Berlin mixed with the dire political straits of East Berlin were broached, this was the song to do it. The song is mocking the Wall and the sociopolitical means by which it got there, but I'm still not sure after thirty-five years of hearing this song exactly what Johnny Rotten is trying to say (and I'm not sure he is either). We can be sure of one thing: It sure sounds he doesn't give a **** about whodunit or why with the Wall, he just wants it traversed and crossed because of its absurdity, something large masses of downtrodden people with pick axes would agree with just twelve years later.

I'm gonna go over the Berlin Wall
I don't understand this thing at all
I'm gonna go over and over the Berlin Wall

Take Me Out was the one I was surprised was so high after doing that ranking site thing. I'm not really a huge fan; I couldn't name another Franz Ferdinand tune, but they really found something on this song. It sounds so huge. Such a fun tune. Turns out they're opening for Pixies so I'll be seeing them in a couple months.
One of the few songs that I can still remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard it. It took me a couple weeks to finally figure out what it was. All I was able to really pull from my first listen (played at a loud outdoor bar on the river) was that guitar riff. I think within 30 seconds of the song it registered as an instant classic to me. So much so I had thought certainly I had heard this song before or that this must be an older established song. Something was so perfect about it, it seemed like it had to have always existed.

Franz Ferdinand never had a song to match that but the whole debut album is very strong.

My memory is for Schmidt these days … but going by memory, is “Take Me Out” the runaway Ace right now?

"Dark Of The Matinee" is, IMO, the sneaky best song on that album. The drop-off where he muses

Well I'm on BBC2 now
Telling Terry Wogan how
I made it
And what I made is unclear now
But his deference is
And his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
Yes they're easy now

My memory is for Schmidt these days … but going by memory, is “Take Me Out” the runaway Ace right now?

Oh dang. Never thought of that. It would be a shame if it was. I almost picked the song I mentioned above or "Jacqueline." It just seemed to me that "Take Me Out" had struck me in a similar way to Ilov80s in that when I first heard it, I just went "Wow" and immediately purchased the album (yes, I still did that back in 2004 or so).

I always loved these lyrics. Those who do the drafts will hopefully indulge me again

Jacqueline was seventeen, working on a desk
When Ivor peered above a spectacle
Forgot that he had wrecked a girl
Sometimes these eyes forget the face they're peering from
When the face they peer upon
Well, you know that face as I do
And how in the return of the gaze
She can return you the face that you are staring from

Going by the Googlesheet, "Take Me Out" is indeed the leader in the Ace clubhouse right now.

EDIT: It looks like "There She Goes" was actually slightly in the Ace lead until yesterday' picks.

No, Mark Ronson is in the lead for the Ace Award.

I don't like it, either.

If I was going to pick a Clash track to get multiple picks on the same day this high, it wouldn't be Train in Vain. Certainly don't dislike the track but today would be the highest I'd place it on a Clash countdown
