Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Top ten starts tomorrow! :excited:

We have an individual tomorrow with five selections combined between solo works and those with his band - all five are different songs.

We'll also lose another one of the Ace Award guesses when a second song is selected from the artist in question.

I saw my Nick Lowe pick dropped the other day. As we got higher I got more confident in it.

Wrong!

I would have thought that would be a good pick. Same with Murray Head, Dusty Springfield, and some others that got knocked out.

I figured we'd see something from Lowe aside from Cruel to Be Kind, but I wasn't expecting a Rick Astley dis track.

New-to-me favorites from #11:

I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight -- Richard and Linda Thompson (Simey). I knew of the album for which this is the title track, but I'd never heard any of it. Excellent melody and arrangement.
If I Only Had Time -- The Godfathers (Mister CIA). It reminds me of The Smithereens, which, as Eephus noted, was definitely not in keeping with the UK musical trends of the late '80s. Maybe they should have directed all their energies over here like Bush did. In any case, The Smithereens and anything that sounds like them are always welcome in my headphones.
Rubber Bullets -- 10cc (Cosjobs). I only know their highly polished mid-70s US hits. This is a bizarre cross between the Beach Boys, British music hall and studio trickery that somehow manages to succeed (and went to No. 1 in the UK!)
Give It Up -- Hard-Fi (Ditkaburgers). Fun and enjoyable.

Whups! I just noticed the spreadsheet updated, and I missed it. My bad, here's the updated contest results:

I've got 4 songs left unselected of my last 10.

The reason I noticed the spreadsheet update was that I was looking through the list for a band that I couldn't believe hadn't been selected yet. Absolutely stunning - why has nobody taken any song yet by one of the top prog rock groups of all time? Pip, why? Surely I'm not the only one who loves them. I'll be taking them at some point, but I'm flabbergasted.

I’m stuck under a cat so can’t get to my computer to see if they’re on your list, but there’s a big-name (I think?) prog rock (I think?) group being selected for the first time tomorrow.

I think we are taking the same band - I mentioned a few pages back I was surprised not to see yet.

Maybe they have an American drummer?

Never really considered the Po-Po to be prog, if that's what we're talking about.

They do not.

How do we address the versions of upcoming songs we're about to select? I'm asking because two songs I have coming up have differing versions on Spotify, and I was hoping to have specific ones used. I know we've been doing it by alerting Hawks64 after the fact, but I'm wondering if we can't do it before and make things easier on the people in charge of that stuff.

Or maybe it doesn't really matter, but it seems people are listening to the playlists and there are bad versions of the songs I picked that might get put into the playlist and won't be indicative of the quality of the song.

Thanks in advance.

Hawks said he’s putting in the version that we linked (if Spotify link) - if not first one that comes up.

He’s away this week and made all the lists in advance - I only know this because he asked for my guy’s songs from the next few days.

I was being facetious since that's what knocked out a bunch of bands in the pre-countdown vetting.

Now, said American drummer was in a prog band before the Po-Po, and would render the albums from that band that he appeared on ineligible.

Is that why nobody has picked "Roxanne" yet?

(I'm a bit behind on the vetting of these groups, as one might be able to tell)

Yes - The Police is listed in the wholly ineligible category in krista’s list in the third post.

I was being facetious with the "Roxanne" thing. Drink!

That said, I'd forgotten that The Police were wholly ineligible. I thought it was a big oversight of mine for a moment. Then I remembered the American drummer thing.

Unless I misunderstood a post, Hawks may have collaborated behind the scenes with Krista and some of the playlists might already be made. Perhaps you could PM Hawks?

It's possible I could do that, but if the lists are already made, then I don't want to trouble him. It's really not a big deal. It's two songs, and if they're bad, nobody is really going to say anything. They're just such quality songs from my twenties that I wanted people to hear the good versions of them. But at forty-nine songs a list, it's not an imperative that it get done.

American drummer from the musical hotbed of Alexandria, VA, which Dave Grohl, Jim Morrison, and John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas also called home. (And I call home, but all I do musically is participate in making song lists on a fantasy football message board).

From the musical hotbed of Alexandria, VA

My friends lived in Alexandria when I worked in D.C. Certainly brief transit into the city. I forgot Grohl was from there. He was in the D.C. hardcore band Scream, which I read over and over as a youth reading about Nirvana.

all I do musically is participate in making song lists on a fantasy football message board.

This describes my life (to a degree).

I would have thought that would be a good pick. Same with Murray Head, Dusty Springfield, and some others that got knocked out.
I figured we'd see something from Lowe aside from Cruel to Be Kind, but I wasn't expecting a hilarious Rick Astley dis track.

Fixed it.

I have only two remaining picks that have not been previously selected (#9 & #4). I expect one will remain unpicked and the other has a decent shot at being picked.

All I know right now is that The Damned's (eligible, of course) second album, Music For Pleasure, has probably the most unfortunate cover art I can remember since Sebadoh put that picture of the child hovering over the toilet with his or her hand in it. It's this weirdly abstract thing in yellow that doesn't tell you until further inspection the name of the band nor the album name.

Also, I'm going to have two unpicked songs in my top ten. No new bands, though. Nothing that out of left field.

I only have 3 songs in my top ten that have not been picked yet (one coming today). The other 7 are pretty chalk. All my artists have been picked. Pretty boring, I know.

I *think* this is where I am too but can't find the spreadsheet yet again!
the link is in the second post.

My bad!

So, of my top 10. One artist has somehow not shown up, and 4 (!) of my songs, and only one is one I thought I might be unique on. The other 3 at this point are surprises to me.
