Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

The most interesting thing I see on tomorrow's list is that we have an artist that has not been previously selected and will also not be selected again...but tomorrow they have two votes for two different songs.

Welcome to the countdown, Fairport Convention!

Good day for U2 and The Beatles, with four selections each.
After I made my top 31 and Last 5 Out, Fairport was one of two bands I wished I had made room for. The song I would have picked made my 1969 countdown.

Feel free to name and discuss it, since we know it isn't going to come up.

Here’s what I wrote:

19. A Sailor's Life -- Fairport Convention (from Unhalfbricking)

@zamboni called it.

IMO this is the apex of Fairport's brand of folk rock. It's an 11-minute workout of a traditional English folk song that takes all kinds of twists and turns that you're not expecting. Richard Thompson's guitar and Dave Swarbrick's violin make all kinds of haunting noises, and Sanny Denny turns in one of her most captivating vocals. Thompson's solo starting around 7:00 is a must-hear.

Fairport had up to this point mostly been aping the American folk scene. The success of this track led them to focus on English and Celtic folk/traditional music for the rest of their career. There are a couple of great examples on their late 1969 album, Liege & Lief, but I didn't have room for them here.

Astral Weeks is very good, but the run of albums Morrison had after it through the '70s are better (or, at least, they have better songs). I think Astral Weeks is more of a cultural oddity - it makes the Velvet Underground sound like Spanky And Our Gang - but it freed Van up.

This is what I said about Where the Streets Have No Name in JML’s countdown thread:

There are several U2 songs from the '80s that were milestones for me.
Gloria -- "This is a cool sound. I should learn more about these guys."
New Year's Day -- "This song is awesome. I am now a fan."
Sunday Bloody Sunday (Red Rocks video) -- "This is an incredible anthem and this band is amazing live."
Bad (Live Aid and Wide Awake in America versions) -- "This is transcendent. These guys are going to be big stars."
Where the Streets Have No Name -- "This is the best band in the world right now."

I got the cassette of TJT for my 16th birthday (which was shortly after the album was released) and was absolutely stunned when I put it on and was greeted with Streets. It had all of the elements that had made U2 great up until that point, and took them to a whole other level. In atmosphere, in build, in dynamics, in momentum, in power, it shaped their trademark sound in new and improved ways that I didn't think were even achievable. It remains one of my favorite songs by any artist to this day.

The entry into the top 5 playlist!

I own a Beatles song! I feel like Michael Jacks...........um nevermind.

Seriously though, my one and only Beatles song, and it's a George Harrison song that Harrison had apparently offered to Joe F'n Cocker! Could you imagine? How much would K4 hate the song? Well, we can all be thankful it made the cut for Abbey Road......I spose there may be a few Cocker fans out there that wouldve rather he got the song......there's a special place in hell reserved for them.

Something is simply one of the most beautiful songs ever composed, imo.

I'm not a big fan of U2 and they never entered my mind when putting my list together for the contest. Not smart.
"Desire" is the only U2 song I like, but I really love it.
I like a few of their songs. Even the ones that aren't for me, I can recognize why they're beloved. Just saying that it'd have been nice to have thought of them as I think that they'll place highly in the contest and I should've included them. Probably instead of Radiohead.

Frank has covered it though, calling it “the greatest love song written” (that may not be exact quote).

My dislike of U2 is probly irrational, but I stand by it. Bono always seemed a pretentious doosh nozzle to me.

That said, I knew they would score highly. They are a very popular band the world over......but I also picked Depeche mode, sooooo

Cocker did get the song:

And his version of it is excellent.

"New Rose" - The Damned

Sliding into my U.K. top five is the first punk rock single released in the U.K. "New Rose" has a Shangri-La's-by-way-of a-New York Dolls spoken intro of "Is she really going out with him?" before it takes off into two and a half minutes of a sonic fury theretofore unseen in the recorded world of music. Rat Scabies's drumming is monstrous, Brian James shreds, and Captain Sensible holds down the bass fort. Dave Vanian sings instead of his latter-career crooning, which means everything is bona fide punk and melodic on this track.

Bono is a grade A prick but it doesn't mean U2 didn't write some great tracks

I've posted this before but Mrs. Eephus' feature film debut was singing along to "New Rose" in the The Damned: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead documentary. Her brief appearance is around the 1:17:50 mark.

It's pretty entertaining as far as music docs go because the members of various incarnations of the band dish the dirt on one another.

I'm glad to see someone else giving love to Fairport Convention. They carved out a pretty fresh niche with English Folk stuff and Richard Thompson is one the artists I'd most highly recommend from my list that others may not know or know well. His work with FP, with wife Linda and solo is outstanding. Check out Matty Groves if you like the combination of traditional English folk and late 60s guitar jam freakouts.

Others on my list who I would recommend strongly who have not seen much action include Ian Dury and Graham Parker.

Also glad to see another vote for I Found That Essence Rare.

Apparently I never submitted this earlier for yesterday's songs. It’s been a busy few days for me, though this time in a fun way. Also this time I didn’t put a previously selected song in the bottom category, so less confusion there!

#6s
Recognized by title alone: 26
Sounded familiar: 3
Knew from this countdown: 3
Didn't know: 11

Selected Favorites:
Firth of Fifth (Pip’s Invitation) - This was a heavy contender for my Genesis selection.
Charlotte Sometimes (simey)
Destroyer (Just Win Baby) - It just missed being listed here the first time, so an easy add here.
Run Runaway (Val Rannous)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
The Only Living Boy In New Cross (titusbramble)
Still Got The Blues (simsarge)
Cadillac (rockaction)
No Ordinary Love (ilov80s)

U2 is a very radio friendly band. I tend to like my popular rock a lil more grimey.....not Joe Cocker grimey.....more like Tom Petty grimey

No one has selected my next three songs so far.
I believe that I am the same, but I'm fairly sure that someone did select the A-side to one of my picks, and the only one that has gone before has only been picked once

Edit - when I say I'm the same, I mean not exactly like that, but 3/4 of my last picks are unused

17 and 5 for me, if my count is correct.

But all of my top four have been loved by another (or two others).

alright, my remaining tracks are:

- aptly titled as of right now
- something that is unused, but the a-side has been picked twice
- the only track that has been used so far which will make certain people happy
- what appears, as of right now, to be only the third track selected off of the album in question for no apparent reason given the depth of tracks that is on it
