Folks, thanks for all of your work. This was a lot of fun. And very interesting to see the way in which our picks really did converge on a smaller group. Most of us suggested this might happen, and that's precisely how it turned out. I am in agreement with Krista that the "Ace Award" going somehow to Mark Ronson for bringing coffee and donuts to Amy Winehouse's recording session is some weaksauce (the reason I picked her version with his dumbass), but what can you do. But this has been really interesting to see how it all diverged from the US version. Looking forward to the next one, though of course I well understand if everyone, especially Krista, needs a long break.


And a few thoughts on the ultimate top 12:

Favorite Songs from British Isles Artists According to Middle-Aged Dummies:
1. Gimme Shelter - 217 -- I figured this would be the #1 Stones tune, if not #1 overall. It's a good consensus pick. I could have easily put it on my list. It's iconic, naturally. There's a reason it shows up in every Scorsese movie (besides his need to contemporize).

2. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - 205 - My #1. Glad to see so many others landed on this as well.

3. Into the Mystic - 195 - This is a particularly nice tune, and also a noted misdirection from the more anthemic rockers that dominate this list.

4. Baba O’Riley - 181 - Like this one. Also classic.

5. Comfortably Numb - 177 - Moving on.

6. Paint It, Black – 154 - The Stones are really something. You think you've heard this song enough times, and then it somehow comes out and surprises you later on.

TIE 7. Solsbury Hill - 150 - Great debut here for Gabriel.

TIE 7. A Day in the Life – 150 - Could have been one of a million choices on the Beatles here. I would not have picked this if I'd gone with something more iconic (maybe "Eleanor Rigby.") Who cares, though. It's a terrific song.

TIE 9. Heroes - 148 - My #4 song. It's so great.

TIE 9. Waterloo Sunset - 148 - Very nice tune.

11. When the Levee Breaks - 143 - I figured this would end up as the #1 Zep tune; we're just not a Stairway crowd. Someone else said this was the best, pure, rawest distillation of LZ's blues power, and that's about right. I was never into music as a kid and a young teen, so I probably didn't put IV on until I was what, 14? Maybe even 15? I remember liking the first two numbers, feeling like I needed to come back to The Battle of Evermore (I did, and love it now), obviously knowing Stairway, getting a kick out of Misty Mountain (still do), sorta meh on Four Sticks (not anymore), figuring Going to California was a quiet, nice one, and then this one came on and blew me out of the room, like Marty McFly plugging in that oversized amp.

12. Train in Vain - 137 - I always thought with the right arrangement this could be a doowop song. Think about it.

One day I was driving with my, at the time teenage, daughter. Rebel Yell comes on and I go to town - full sneering lip thing, fist pumping, singing loudly. She was jamming along, but more subdued.

We come to a stoplight and she starts smiling and points for me to look out my window at the people next to us - Who are laughing near hysterically. Not at me, but with me because - they were doing the same thing! As the light turned and we went our separate ways, we all could be heard through our rolled down windows screaming "MORE! MORE! MO-ERRR!!"

I think this is Pink Floyd's greatest achievement in a career with many of them. It's got heroic guitar work, chilling atmospherics and biting social commentary, all of which are hallmarks of many of the greatest British rock songs. It's 17 minutes long but feels much shorter than that -- every note has a purpose and nothing meanders. I think it may also have the greatest vocals of any Floyd song. David Gilmour's voice on the first two-thirds of the song is heart-wrenching, and while I normally don't care much for Roger Waters' voice, his work on the last third is extremely compelling as well.

When I had dropped the hint that Echoes wasn't on my list (because I said my longest song was 22 minutes and Echoes is 23), Zamboni PM'd me to say Echoes was his #1 but he had a hard time not including Dogs (because he did one song per artist, as many of us did). Well, the same was true for me in reverse! So I think we are both happy with how this turned out.

I finally got to see Sir Elton on his farewell tour at Giants Stadium this past summer. Other than "Have Mercy on the Criminal," a song I did not know until that point, it's a pretty chalky set list (which, for Elton John, happens to mean 25 pretty damned well-known songs and skipping a bunch that would have otherwise sat comfortably in that mix, but no Amoreena or Grey Seal or anything).

Still, the moment of greatest power came from Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, which deserves all of its epic accolades and easily why I put it on my list at the top. In the years of the Firecracker 500 (when I and Pip were always listening to it), it was always the one that came near the top for Elton - usually lower end of the top 10, maybe 10-20. Generally every rock band's "epic" ends up near the top, some of which is undeserved (looking in the direction of the Eagles), but in his case, it's well deserved. He does very few epics; mostly pretty tight pop tunes with the rare exception like All the Girls Love Alice, and even that's just 5 minutes long. Led Zep he ain't.

Funny you mention the Firecracker 500 - on WNEW (102.7) in NYC, if I recall correctly. Pretty sure I first heard the tune on that countdown way back in the day and was blown away by it. May have even had a Priest Holmes moment by being #1 overall that year.

It's a running gag among my friend group that my taste in entertainment is undefinable.

In the past, I've defined my taste in music as "A Whitman's sampler for the ears".
Partially that's out of a sense of variety of genres and styles, with bits here and there. But there's also the idea that, while in general most find it pretty good, there will be some things you love and others that you can't stomach. With the amounts of each being completely personal.
