Billy Idol got less, less, less than I expected. More than surprised in the only one with Rebel Yell.
Maybe it's because the song sucks?
I kid, I kid!

As per our PM discussion, to spread the wealth, I will designate the funds from the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!! and would like to have Just Win Baby and Eephus split designating the funds from the ***OFFICIAL*** contest.Contest results!
***OFFICIAL*** contest winners: Just Win Baby and Pip’s Invitation, with a total of seven points and a win in the tiebreaker over Eephus (lost by only six points in the tiebreaker), scorchy, AAABatteries, and contest-master Val Rannous. Despite applying two tie-breakers, this one will be split because they selected exactly the same answers!
No one correctly guessed the highest-scoring non-Big-3 song, but each of these individuals predicted six of the seven artists filling out the top 10, as well as the top overall point-getter.
SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111 winner: Pip’s Invitation, with an impressive total of 10 correct!

One day I was driving with my, at the time teenage, daughter. Rebel Yell comes on and I go to town - full sneering lip thing, fist pumping, singing loudly. She was jamming along, but more subdued.Maybe it's because the song sucks?Billy Idol got less, less, less than I expected. More than surprised in the only one with Rebel Yell.

I'm not sure, but do you deliver?4: Elton John: 686
TIE 5: David Bowie: 648
TIE 5: The Who: 648
7: Pink Floyd: 644
8: The Kinks: 581
9: U2: 572
10: Van Morrison: 431
Dang -- got six of the seven in Val's contest. Didn't see Van Morrison coming, and thought Oasis would have a lot more stroke with this crew. Fun contest all the same.
...
What was I smoking to tap U2 as the #1 overall act? Overthought that pretty severely![]()
Dogs should have been my Floyd pick in hindsight. I started there, hit shuffle and 3rd song up was Echoes, so I started the mix off nicely.Charade you areI did laugh when I saw those 2 Floyd tracks pop up today."Echoes" on the many thanks for doing this, Krista and all - very much appreciated.

I'm happy somebody picked Tupelo Honey.Into the Mystic was very tempting to be my #1. That would have pushed it to the top song overall. Wasn’t expecting that.

How does this work @krista4, would I make the donation in Pip's name? Do I need his real name? For my designation, I would like my share of the funds to go to The Center for Family Services, of which my employer is a major supporter. https://www.centerffs.org/

Yep, thanks all. Enjoyed the thread and the playlists. Wish I had finished and submitted my picks to get the full experience but was still great!

Funny you mention the Firecracker 500 - on WNEW (102.7) in NYC, if I recall correctly. Pretty sure I first heard the tune on that countdown way back in the day and was blown away by it. May have even had a Priest Holmes moment by being #1 overall that year.I finally got to see Sir Elton on his farewell tour at Giants Stadium this past summer. Other than "Have Mercy on the Criminal," a song I did not know until that point, it's a pretty chalky set list (which, for Elton John, happens to mean 25 pretty damned well-known songs and skipping a bunch that would have otherwise sat comfortably in that mix, but no Amoreena or Grey Seal or anything).
Still, the moment of greatest power came from Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, which deserves all of its epic accolades and easily why I put it on my list at the top. In the years of the Firecracker 500 (when I and Pip were always listening to it), it was always the one that came near the top for Elton - usually lower end of the top 10, maybe 10-20. Generally every rock band's "epic" ends up near the top, some of which is undeserved (looking in the direction of the Eagles), but in his case, it's well deserved. He does very few epics; mostly pretty tight pop tunes with the rare exception like All the Girls Love Alice, and even that's just 5 minutes long. Led Zep he ain't.
I foresee Rush and Nickelback getting dumped on. And probably at least half my list if I get one inThis was a fun exercise, thanks @krista4, @Hawks64 , and @falguy .
Hope me making fun of Def Leppard did not offend anyone. I was mostly making fun of myself because they are pretty well liked by the masses here. Luckily, if the catchall contest goes down, there are no bands (Canadian, for instance) that I can think of to make mean comments about.
Ok I will make the donation on that one - just wasn't sure if Pip needed to get credit. With limited exceptions where I knew someone's real name (like when you won a portion of my post-Beatles Beatles thread contest), I just donate anonymously.

That was likely always my choice. Reminds me of my wife, was our 1st dance at our wedding.I'm happy somebody picked Tupelo Honey.Into the Mystic was very tempting to be my #1. That would have pushed it to the top song overall. Wasn’t expecting that.

Why is the Eagles' song undeserving?Generally every rock band's "epic" ends up near the top, some of which is undeserved (looking in the direction of the Eagles), but in his case, it's well deserved
Krista and I are right, and all you people are wrong.
I really think the whole "I hate the Eagles, man" thing has gone too far.Why is the Eagles' song undeserving?
I love the song, but had to skip it on the playlist because my dog always starts barking when he hears the dog's barking.I think this is Pink Floyd's greatest achievement in a career with many of them.
I assume their "epic" song is Hotel California. The duet guitar solos at the end of that song are excellent.I really think the whole "I hate the Eagles, man" thing has gone too far.Why is the Eagles' song undeserving?
I posted that same clip in another thread yesterday - love it.I love the song, but had to skip in on the playlist because my dog always starts barking when he hears the dog's barking.I think this is Pink Floyd's greatest achievement in a career with many of them.
Mr. Carlson hears them also

You probably just never sat and really listened to the lyrics:Maybe it's because the song sucks?

In the past, I've defined my taste in music as "A Whitman's sampler for the ears".It's a running gag among my friend group that my taste in entertainment is undefinable.
Partially that's out of a sense of variety of genres and styles, with bits here and there. But there's also the idea that, while in general most find it pretty good, there will be some things you love and others that you can't stomach. With the amounts of each being completely personal.
Whoa, whoa, whoa...You probably just never sat and really listened to the lyrics:Maybe it's because the song sucks?
She don't like slavery, she won't sit and beg
But when I'm tired and lonely, yeah, she gives me head
I said, "What set you free and brought you to me, babe?"
"What set you free? I need you here by me"
Because
In the midnight hour she cried more, more, more
With a rebel yell more, more, more, yow!
In the midnight hour, babe, more, more, more
With a rebel yell
More

I doubt people click on the links anyway. I think most listen off the playlists. My computer is updating and restarting now. If it still doesn’t work, I think it best for me just to post the picks without links.
In a song like that, the lyrics aren't very important really. It's a "feel" song.If we're going to start judging songs based on lyrical efficacy...better get a big lunch and comfy chair ready.
