Restaurant/hotel business. Over the last year and half, I’ve been involved with a new project, refurbishing and getting a historic hotel back up and running. It’s on the sand in Laguna beach.

I keep meaning to check with you on something and forgetting: I assume you've been to Heritage BBQ? A major thing about this 'burgh in the negative column is the utter lack of legit Carolina/KC BBQ of any sort. I've had a few tell me that Heritage is the one place that's got it....but it feels/sounds like a rip off when you take a gander at those prices.

Have you partaken? Worth it?

Maine is good enough.

Winner: The most apathetic state motto ever.

My wife's uncle lives in Maine. They drive snowmobiles 11 months out of the year to get to their property. "Good enough" seems exceptionally relative to me.
i've never been i don't like bbq
I just felt a disturbance in the force.

Note to self: Never take any advise from Raiders......

Are you a BBQ fan?

I'd say that I am an "enjoyer"of BBQ....in that I enjoy eating good BBQ. I'm not one of those monsters who has his own smoker out back (neat trick, since "out back" here would be an 18 inch strip of groundcover) with some kind of aged dry rub rib currently sizzling, if that's what you mean.

I haven't heard much else about Heritage other than what I posted. We've lived within 25 minutes of it for almost 6 years now and I didn't even know it existed.

@5-ish Finkle I had lunch right around the corner today. 😂. Turkish food. Delicious.

You chose Turkish food over Heritage BBQ?
To be fair, like @5-ish Finkle i didn’t even know it was there. 😂. we went to the Turkish place by mistake. And to say it’s Turkish, isn’t really correct. the menu was full of of middle eastern food, but the place was called Mayfield. walking in, we had no clue what the food would be like. It was delicious.

Okay...this? This is the real reason why we've never met.

Has SHE ever been to Heritage? Same question from before, but for Mrs. Raid.
she has not. Let’s all go together!

I'm game.
We are in the beginning of a complete remodel of our downstairs. We’ll have no kitchen for the next 6-8 weeks. pick a day. Can almost do lunch any day.

Thanks. I haven't been but have heard buzz about it. I think partly as the area isn't known as a BBQ area. So that makes it stand out.

They have a couple of locations, right? Is there one in Oceanside?

Yeah, that's what I was told. There is one in O-side, which looks like it's an actual "sit down" bar and restaurant, from what I understand. While the SJC location is kind of a walkup window type place, with outside seating, where you order stuff by weight (or so it was explained. 2nd hand info, that).

Buddy of mine lives in Oceanside, but also has never been to either location. I told him he needs to go do some recon.

Do they live on top of Mt. Katahdin or something?

It was mostly hyperbole.

It IS effing remote though. "No facilities", etc

In the kids are dumb department:

Dropped something off at a friend’s house yesterday. As I was walking back to my car, saw 2 kids playing a couple of houses down. One girl was inside a dog cage and the other was pretending to feed her. They looked to be 8/9 years old.

The girl in the cage saw me and yelled “Look at me, I’m a furry! I’m a furry!” 💀:oldunsure:

I will have you know we will reach nearly fifty degrees Fahrenheit this weekend.

Global warming really IS a thing.

Now that I’ve lived through an actual pandemic, I understand why Italian Renaissance paintings were full of naked, fat people laying around on coaches.
Try looking at paintings that aren't from Rex Ryan's collection (I assume the feet were all visible).

Just watched my psycho neighbor chase someone halfway down the block because their dog pooped on his lawn

Good for him in this case but he’s got issues.

Gave the neighbor kids $20 to build a snowman last winter and then came and asked for a refund because the head fell off a few hours later

Can we go back to the part where someone paid kids to build a snowman?

I feel like this is an appropriate time for a Hipple. WTF!!!!

So…sounds like there’s a good chance my MIL has stage 4 cancer. Will hopefully know tomorrow but initial scan and comments in her chart aren’t promising, but still pending a follow up scan and consult with the oncologist, so nothing definite, but doesn’t sound promising

Oh and perfect timing I leave for 2 weeks tomorrow for an out of state work trip. Torn because I know my wife needs my support, but it’s an also something I really need to be onsite for and make sure things go right, and at the end of the day there’s nothing I can really do. Hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to cut it short depending on how things are going

Oh and I managed to fall for a scam and lost $1500 in Bitcoin today too

I'm sorry GB.

Thanks. They’re still running a barrage of tests, so don’t fully know what we’re dealing with yet. Hopefully not as bad as first suspected, doing my best to be optimistic and trying to keep the wife from jumping to conclusions based on reading her medical charts

Thoprawishes for the best possible outcome! Any chance in recovering the bitcoin?

I doubt it, I still haven’t unfrozen my account, but I’m just assuming it’s gone. The money doesn’t bother me as much as me getting duped. Also probably a good lesson for me to set up 2 factor authentication

Damn. Sorry to hear, Lambskin. Where in the body? Even for Stage 4, where can make a big difference in likely outcomes.

Sounds like her ovary right now but still doing tests to see if it’s spread elsewhere. I think the wife jumped the gun on stage 4 based on reading the doctors notes

Still waiting on more tests / results to get a full diagnosis so hoping it’s not as serious as we thought

Told the wife to quit reading charts and just go by what doc says

Update: confirmed it's peritoneal carcinomatosis which does not have a good outlook. Still waiting on more info but not the good news we were hoping for

I also lost a bunch of money in a bitcoin scam. It was called "buying bitcoin."

Thoprawishes to your family.

I’m so sorry to hear. That sucks.

Being the parent of a kid with special needs can suck. 14 year old daughter on tbt autism spectrum with other learning disabilities got an iPhone recently. She had been making friends with some neurotypical girls in her grade level which was a first for her. Had been texting in a group text and even FaceTiming at times.

We’re still trying to figure out what happened, but my wife just got a call from her teacher that the girls have asked that my daughter no longer contact them in any way anymore and said something about some of their parents requesting that too. But she said she had no details which really sucks even more because now we can’t even appropriately address it with her and walk her through what happened to help her better understand and try to avoid whatever it was in the future.

My heart is broken for my daughter as she is really going to be hurt and I’m decently frustrated with the school for not getting more information. If she truly did something wrong/offensive/whatever, I really need to know that so that we can address it. It’s very possible, and I guess probable, that she did. But there’s also the chance that they just decided that my daughter was a little too weird or atypical and now are essentially bullying the special needs kid.

Being a parent is tough man.

That sucks. Any chance of reaching out to one of the parents to get some details ?

Well, got some more details and….

Yeah, my daughter is the problem. She tends to hyper focus, especially in newer and more exciting circumstances and was apparently hyper focusing her friendship a bit on one or two girls. The problem is that she also became jealous of other kids paying them attention and handled that jealousy really poorly. Apparently threatened to beat other kids up and they got afraid of her. So that’s cool. Turns out my daughter was being the bully. I don’t believe she would ever actually try to hurt someone, but  And I don’t expect other 8th graders to understand/tolerate inappropriate social behavior and frankly I won’t tolerate that behavior either.

So now she’s a victim of natural consequences of her own actions which sucks but hopefully will be a learning experience as well as opportunity for us to help address those behaviors. Just sucks that it cost her some of the few neurotypical friends that were nice and welcoming to her.

Maybe a good opportunity for all parties to learn from the experience and move on together... Still as friends? Sounds much easier than reality, I know - but if other girls (and parents) are open to talking and moving past that, could be an amazing bonding experience. Lemony lemonade?

Oh man, this is heartbreaking. Sorry.

I was going to recommend maybe reaching out to a few of the parents, just to get feedback and maybe start some dialogue, but I know that will come across as being "Karenish".
