Watching Mathew stafford’s wife talking about how normal her life is and that her podcast is meant to connect with “regular everyday people” is grating to me. His Career earnings? 368 million. I’m sure her day to day is just like mine.
surely your chauffeur takes your maid to Whole Foods to shop for the weekly groceries, to be prepared by your chef and monitored by your dietitian, no?

Not usually. My kid did just hit the brand new garage door I had installed. Cool cool cool

i have no idea what it's like to have someone hit a garage door, garage frame, structure, car parked in a driveway, on the street, or for that matter any other car related mayhem that may or may not have been their fault. absolutely none at all. :(

maybe it's inherited because my kid, who isn't officially licensed yet, managed to clip the garage frame while backing out and shattered the passenger side mirror.

i give up

Oof. Not looking forward to either of my kids driving. Although... my oldest (14 in February) said that she's in no hurry to get her license and that if we just got her an E-Bike that she wouldn't want to even try driving until she was like 18. I don't know if I believe her... I think she just wants an E-Bike... but I'm inclined to just fork over the $1,200 for the bike and keep my SUV for a few more years than I expected to. Who knows what my son will want... I think he just wants to sit in his room and play his Nintendo Switch all day.

My daughter waited until she 17 and change before getting her license

I feel your pain. My 16 year backed the boat into the garage frame opening.

I've taken 17yo floppinho driving once.

ONCE.

it was near OC MD in an area without cars. Yesterday he had his first driving lesson/class through school. I figured they'd lay down some rules of the road through a couple days of lectures and then take them out into some sleepy/quiet areas of Queens or Brooklyn.

Nope. Picked them up at school on the upper east side of Manhattan and had them drive around in traffic. I've been driving my entire life and it's still rough going doing that... My son doesn't really even know how to make a car turn or stop yet. he survived

anecdotally, most of my kids friends are 16+ and do not have their licenses. she has told me most of them don't want to drive.

now, there are certainly friends of hers who do drive but it's maybe 30% or something. very odd.

It took my 2nd son FIVE attempts to pass the written test for his permit. He refused to study the book and arrogantly stated the book wasn't nearly as good as a study guide as 'his app(?)' that he was using. On his fifth attempt, I told him I wasn't taking him unless he read the book frontwards and backwards and if he failed, he'd have to wait a good long while before I took him again. What do you know, he passed!

You know, examining this now on a look back, maybe I should have seen his recent college career coming to a sudden and disastrous end.

Seems to be more of the norm based on my kids' friends. Man, when we were 15/16 this was #1 priority.

I had at least 2 GB's in junior/senior year that had their license (and their own cars), so I really didn't have any urgency. I think I was 17 when I got my permit and subsequently license. And I know at first I was super reluctant to drive on the freeway.

It really is a head-scratcher. My oldest was 16 when he got his license, but I think it was a couple months after his 16th birthday if I recall. Took my other son until he was 17 for reasons cited up above. But like you, I couldn't WAIT to get my license. I remember my first solo car trip like it was yesterday - went out and got myself a hair cut. Felt so ALIVE and grown-up. :lmao:

My kids got their licenses at 16, but many of their friends didn't. That totally blows my mind, since like you that was top priority for everyone when I was in HS.

I'm with this new generation of kids. Driving sucks now. My wife still likes it and I just let her drive us everywhere. I am perfectly good being a passenger princess.

My experience with the neighborhood kids is that they aren't too interested in driving. Most of them who are over 16 ride their bikes around town or carpool with one of their few friends who do drive. My own kids just turned 13 and have already told us that they have no interest in driving any time soon. My son is bugging me for an e-bike though.

Interesting. Guess I should start pricing e-bikes. I've heard you can get some decent deals on Facebook Marketplace.
Will more than be covered by the amount you save on that first 6 months of insurance premium.

Mine didn’t increase that much. I thought it would be A LOT. ended up being about $100/mo

Laugh and or smile emoji here.
maybe it's inherited because my kid, who isn't officially licensed yet, managed to clip the garage frame while backing out and shattered the passenger side mirror.

i give up
I think he just wants to sit in his room and play his Nintendo Switch all day.
anecdotally, most of my kids friends are 16+ and do not have their licenses. she has told me most of them don't want to drive.

now, there are certainly friends of hers who do drive but it's maybe 30% or something. very odd.

different generation

Seems to be more of the norm based on my kids' friends. Man, when we were 15/16 this was #1 priority.
got my license on my 16th birthday. absolutely could not wait to take the test.
In my youth, some people took cars and drove before any particular age or licensing requirement was met. Some. Or so I've heard. A different age indeed.

Yea, I worked on a horse ranch at 14. I knew how to drive. Hell I could back up a trailer. Just didn’t bother with the license until I was 17.

My daughter said that when she was 15. I was pretty shocked. Once driving age rolled around, she did a complete 180. I couldn't imagine not having the additional freedom that comes with being able to drive.

Let's be real, the cost to insure a teenager ain't cheap, so I wonder if some of these families are also 'holding off' on having junior drive into their newly installed fancy garage doors.
Or your SO.
The cost to insure nannies also isn't cheap?
The cost to insure a wife who has three incidents in a year:help:. Of course, its the car's fault so insurance is unfairly picking on her.

Suddenly, TLC has a new TV show - "Sister Wives Discovered".

My daughter got her license on her 16th birthday. She totaled the neighbor's new car 30 days after her 16th birthday. She's 20 now, and has been in 8 accidents (6 so minor we didn't report them). All were while she was in reverse. She says she's really good at driving forward. That's not true, either.

Why was she driving the neightbor's car?
she wasn't so much driving it as driving over it. backed right up onto the hood.
