GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (5 Viewers)

Travelled across the country yesterday with my 80 year old parents. My step dad hadn’t traveled in 7-8 years. Just getting them the airline app was a challenge. Looooooong day. But here I am in Newport, RI. Highlight of the trip? Found the only place open for food at 2am last night. Checkers pizza. The 2 Dave’s running the place could not have been more awesome. When Dave asked me if there was anything else he could get me, I said I was good unless he Had a couple beers hidden somewhere. He said he might be able to help me out. Couldn’t sell me any, but could probably give me a couple. Bless you Dave. God Bless you Dave. So if if you’re in Middleton, RI, give checkers pizza some business.

Took the family to Newport in August. Had never been there before. Enjoyed it a lot. Though being in downtown Newport on a summer Friday night made me feel really poor.
Main event tonight at the Newport yacht club. My dumb drunk *** spoke at the end in support of my mom(the oldest) and apparently I’m hosting the next reunion.
Well played Dave, well played.

Made an effort this week to put a dent in my way over cluttered basement and made decent progress. Which somehow set off my dad’s radar and he turned his basement full of tools he will never use again into my basement of tools I will likely never use. It literally now looks like I’ve been pillaging every yard sale in the county for the past 30 years.

1 radial arm saw with homemade wooden table/base
1 table saw
1 drill press
2 trim/miter saws
1 band saw
1 jig saw
1 scroll saw
1 belt sander
1 bench grinder
2 routers and router tables
1 nice work table that holds maybe 3 or 4 of these things.

I almost never tackle a project that needs more than a drill, a handheld jigsaw, and a circular saw.

If you see me in here trying to give away a piano, it’ll be because I plugged one of these things in and cut my thumbs off.

Thanks dad…

I really don't need any of this but might be willing to take some off your hand.

Kwikset >>> Schlage
I sold both brands in the '80s & '90s, and Kwikset was junk back then. Have they upped their game?
I've never speced kwikset. Usually schlage.
All the tract builders I sold building material to used Kwikset. Their hardware weighed about half as much as Schlage's did. I've always used Schlage in my own houses. For an off-the-shelf product, they were really solid.

I'm not quite sure how Stanley missed the boat on locksets and door knobs back in the day, as they would seem to have been best-positioned to rule that market.

Did @General Malaise and @SFBayDuck survive the mayhem last night?
🤣

Recovering! Hoping my voice will return at some point.

I randomly bumped into GM on Friday night but we didn’t cross paths yesterday. I don’t think. At hour five of the tailgate sometimes things start to blur together, then they come back into focus at kickoff.

Ha! That was fun seeing you all! I love the Pint Pot -that is MY kind of bar! Although I don't think the waitress took to kindly to the wafting smells of marijuana. :oldunsure:

Yeah you got us in trouble!

I'm sorry! I'm the worst.

Was in Home Depot the other day and walked by a drill press and said to myself “I don’t have one of those”. I don’t really have room or much use for one, but seems like something I should have

My only experience with Schlage was discovering that the outside knob will turn freely when the door is locked. Meaning you cannot tell that the door is going to lock behind you when you walk outside. I locked myself out of my house once about 30 years ago and have hated that "feature" ever since.

Kwikset doorknobs will barely turn when locked, so it's immediately obvious that you're closing a locked door behind you.

Fwiw, I know nothing about kwikset... Just saying I usually spec schlage or something fancier.

Just googled- turns out there's a reason for that.

I think between another purge in my basement and my nephews I can get it down to like a misdemeanor level hoarding violation, and appease dad by keeping the stuff “in the family”, but I’ll let you know if I am still overwhelmed with stuff.

And, a drill press does seem like something I should have. Maybe I’ll start mass producing those stupid little golf tee games for Cracker Barrel.

After about 1000 Moreno/Brown ads, I have to have passed the legal threshold to vote on that race even though I live in KY, right?

Tried the Coke flavored Oreos today because they were on sale. Interesting, but not good. After eating two I'm happy to never have another one again.

Took me back in time to when I was a kid and got dragged to my great-aunt’s house, where the candy looks like it should taste good, but has a hint of lemon Pledge flavoring because she must’ve misted the bowl several dozen times in the god knows how many years the candy sat out waiting for company. But hey, you’re like 7, so what else you gonna do besides flipping through the pages of Reader’s Digest?

Hope for a national geographic?

I was such a nerd I would go straight for the maps instead looking for “culture”.

My dad for years had a homemade organizer in the garage. It was a wheel of some kind mounted to the wall, and then he fastened jar lids all the way around it. Filled the jars with various nuts, bolts, toilet seat fasteners, etc. and screwed them into the lids. When he needed something, he'd rotate that jar to the bottom to remove it with no spills.

I can't recall if it was still around when he died a few years ago. Maybe someone in the family still has it.

Kind of exciting news this weekend... We found out our crew has been selected to officiate one of the Class 5A (out of 6) football state high school semifinal games at US Bank stadium in a few weeks. This also makes us eligible to get a state championship game next year. Pretty excited, but also nervous. The evaluation process is pretty intense.

So I'll try to give the short version

Driving home from golf tournament. BiL driving, I'm a passenger. Very slow stop and go traffic.

We hear a girl yell help me, and see her head almost out the corner of her passenger window. Thought it was a joke as we see her bent over now and the guy reaching over for her. We pull side by side and screams HELP. BiL rolls window down and asks if she is ok.

Right at that moment she busts open the passenger door of her car and takes off across the road and heading back the way we just came. Guy driving cuts off traffic and pulls into parking lot right where we are.

Brother in-law follows dude takes off, we drive down to check on girl and she's freaked out

Put her in car, call 911 and the state police take their sweet old time getting there.

We were a bit upset the cop took a while and this cop waits for crossing traffic, no lights to pull in. Takes his time walking up to talk, like no big deal

Did you get murdered in the middle of posting this story??? Cause this sounds pretty crazy and I need to know how this end…

It ended with the cop walking up like no big deal..... That was the end.

Sorry I cleared it up.

They took our statements and said they would handle it from here

She was kidnapped? She just wanted to get away from her lame boyfriend? It was a prank? She's claustrophobic? Theres some info you might have that we definitely don't have.

This ending is more disappointing than the end of Game of Thrones.
Sorry, I wasn't murdered
Well at least there would have been some closure.

But to be serious, good on you for pulling over and helping that woman. You may very well have saved that woman’s life. A lot of people would have chosen to not get involved. You’re good people.
