GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (9 Viewers)

I loathe speed and red light cameras with a passion. Very dystopian in nature and effect. All I can think of is the doctrine within evidence law that says machines can't make hearsay statements, which means recordings and photos and videos are admissible in court as evidence to the truth of the charge against you. That's where you get screwed here, I think. Would need Woz or one of the lawyers to say if that's accurate, but I can't help but shake the feeling that is the rub here.

I took a defensive driving course once. It actually really helped out my driving, which up until then had been abysmal. I have had three wrecks in the past decade living out in California, though, so I guess I didn't really get that good at driving, now that I think about it.
There was a study about 20 years ago that showed that red light cameras actually caused more accidents. They're a giant money grab. Speed cameras seem just as bad. There's one around here that is on a 40 mile an hour curve coming off a freeway. Nobody slows to 40 by the time they hit that camera. They must send out a couple hundred tickets a day.

Anything dumber around here than the 30 second wait time between posts? I know it's meant to stop bots but seems like 5 seconds would be sufficient.

Hi @shuke @Dan Lambskin @mr. furley and @urbanhack sorry to hear you think it's so dumb. It's one of the things the board software recommends as best practices to diminish bot posting and flooding the site. It seems to work pretty well in keeping them in check and they think it's superior to a shorter time interval.

Feel like if you have like 500 posts here or something it should be turned off
I might have asked about that before and it’s not supported

Thanks. And you're correct. It's not something supported by the software we purchase to host the forums with.

No. Just that you all liked the "Anything dumber around here than the 30 second wait time between posts?"

It's no big deal and I try not to make things personal. But it's mostly impossible as I personally put a ton of effort into trying to make the forums as good as they can be.

I don't really mind the lag time. Probably good for a hot head like me to have a requisite wait time before machine gun posting.

One thing I learned last night in the defensive driving course - just give yourself a little more time. A second more behind the car in front of you on the freeway, a 2 second pause at a red light that turns green, clearing the intersection instead of just gunning it, take a second to come to a full stop.

Please don't. This doesn't work in Portland because so many lights stay green for a ridiculously short amount of time. Especially turn lanes. Pretty common to have to spend three light cycles trying to make a left.

Maybe I need this course....

Oh, I understand. You east siders have it a lot tougher with smaller streets, more cars on the arterial roads, etc.

One thing I've picked up as a pedestrian walking to work is that I need to be vigilant at all times. I don't cross until I'm sure traffic sees me and I am amazed at how many drivers I spot from the sidewalk blatantly using their phones. We've been hands' free here since 2009 and it hasn't put a dent on the number of distracted drivers I see day in and day out.

HOKA shoes - anyone have a pair?

I typically go on a little bit of a spending spree the first few months of the year since I'm usually flush with extra coin from a side job ( :oldunsure: ) and fantasy football winnings ( :football: ). I usually grab a couple of shirts, maybe some shoes... stuff that I would typically pass on if I didn't have the "extra" money.

Well, I've seen a lot of folks wearing these shoes (a lot of 'em in airports) so I decided to grab a pair. I am in airports at least once a month AND I'm trying to "get healthier" so will be going on occasional walks around my neighborhood to lose some weight.

I ordered a pair in my size (10.5) but man they felt tight, especially in the toe area. Not length-wise, per se, but just cramped. Other than that, super comfy.

Turns out they have brick & mortar stores (there's one by me in a fancy mall) so I went in and tried on 11's... much better. Asked if they had "wides" in 11. Even better. Unfortunately they didn't have the color I wanted, but they swiftly processed the exchange and I'll have 'em in a few days.

If anyone walks a good bit for exercise or otherwise, I can't recommend these bad boys enough. They are incredibly comfortable. They'll set you back a good $150ish but totally worth it.

HOKA shoes - anyone have a pair?

I ran in them consistently as I got older (Cliftons) and have since continued using them as a weekend walker since my Achilles tendonopathy shut me down (and inability/laziness to do PT).

Big fan.
About a month ago the outer "balls" (huh huh) of my feet both started to hurt a little. Probably because of the shoes I was wearing, but maybe just 'cuz I'm getting old. These HOKAs will definitely help.

and re: wide shoes... yeah, they only come in one style/color per model. sucks when you see all the options and then click 'wide" and only get the one.

been running in Hoka Machs for a few years now. they are almost weirdly cushiony soft to the point of being awkward but i've come to love it for running.

wouldn't be caught dead walking around in them except for dog walks, though

I lucked out and they had the wide versions in the one I wanted. Now, on the website I thought they were more grey than blue but upon arrival they're more steely blue than gray. Probably me being partially colorblind lol. No biggie.

I'll use them for walks and probably for travel too since I end up walking in terminals (usually have layover somewhere). And/or if my feet are hurting like they have been. Guess I should probably go to my doctor for yet another ailment.

Tell me more about this Achilles tendonopathy. My heel suddenly starting hurting a few weeks ago. It's been slowly improving, but still hurts. It isn't bad enough to actually see my doctor about this, but in a phone call he mentioned plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, and bone spurs as potential causes. He basically told me to get over the counter orthotics and see what happens in a month or two.

I had permanently sprained ankles for 3 years in HS playing soccer all year.

when I did my triathlon training in my 30s, I over did it and the ankles and related tendons started failing (worn out tendons started pulling the bones in my feet apart from overuse).

during covid and the next couple years, I started running again... but again, over did it. twice. the first time was early on (and just before covid), and I got into regular PT which really helped. this time, it was clearly the achilles that were failing- tendonitis, tendonopathy... tbh, I can't recall the difference other than I was diagnosed with the latter the second time and told to shut down completely for 6 months. that was almost 3 years ago :bag:

the PT really worked. I tried to get back into it, but my insurance reared its ugly head and I gave up the fight.

but heel pain sounds more like plantar fasciitis or spurs, tbh.

I have bottom of heel pain too. Ice and crap doesn't do anything. Only these exercises (heel raises).

I remember when I used to post about drugs and women.
I think I've been married the entire time I've been here. :kicksrock:

hey- how's fish Jr? is she graduating? staying in the city? it's very cool that she's persevered.
roverkid is finishing her junior year. has an internship with the international emmy awards. she's staying there for the summer and taking a class or two. grades are great and she will only need to go part time both semesters senior year to graduate. she loves NYC and doesn't ever want to leave. currently living in Hell's Kitchen, but we may try to find her another place when her lease is up in July.

Try KT tape. I’ve been with dealing massive plantar pain. Google the way to tape it. It really helps. It’s nearly gone. Been bothering me badly since Nov. keep in mind my dumb azz works on my feet, does 12-25k steps a day. And I’ve gone on 4 ski trips since Nov. so your results may be more immediate than mine. It was nearly gone in Feb. but I managed to hit a foot deep untouched steep powder run at solitude. Lost my balance at the end of it where it really got steeper and torqued it good.

I’ve done PT for it as well. Google that also. Really simple stretches and exercises that are easy replicated on your own.

I’m a brooks guy. Hokas gave me a bunion that still rears its head from time to time. The 6th toe. I had to punch out my ski boots for it. :hot:

Sincerely sorry, Joe. You know how much I appreciate the home you've created for us here. "Dumb" was a poor choice of words. "Mildly annoying but understandable" would have been better.

I went and tried on Hokas and On Clouds. I prefer Asics Gel-Cumulous and Brooks Ghost, at least for my high arches and feet issues, which are much more comfortable than the other two brands.
