Had a mandatory "voluntary" staff meeting on what was supposed to be a holiday today, but managed to avoid attending a luncheon at a community event immediately afterwards. Also, the meeting was held in the event space of a bourbon distillery and we got a tour and a sample of same pretty damn good bourbon to boot.

Guess I earned some karma after basically reenacting  Valley Forge with my sons scout troop this weekend.

We had a newborn who still wasn't sleeping through the night who was with us in the same hotel room. The AC broke in that room at 4am. By 9am it was 82 IN THE ROOM. And the windows wouldn't open.

Southern Illinois must be a Mecca for lousy weddings. I went to one somewhere in the vicinity of Evansville Indiana in a non-air conditioned one room church in the middle of a corn field. It was considerably cooler than Roboto's example, probably a brisk 90 or so. It did have the distinction of being completely overrun by those fake ladybug/Southern pine beetle things. Watching them parade in an endless conga-line up and down the pews and  the pullchains on the ceiling fans was a welcome distraction from looking over one shoulder for Malachi and the rest of the gang at least.

oh man, i've been to Mount Vernon.  i'm sorry you had to, too.

eta: fun fact that i didn't learn until visiting a different Southern Illinois city first. it's a hotbed for Klan activity. so it's got that going for it. at least it did 20 years ago.

Update on recurring topic:

Idiot older son (now 16) has finally seemed to have a breakthrough in terms of his attitude and demeanor here and towards Wife2.0. Basically, he is no longer acting like an idiot.

He didn't offer a tearful apology or anything, but he owned up to the fact that he felt disloyal to his mom if he liked Wife2.0 and admits that he hasn't been fair to her, or me.

He also admits that a lot of the things he blamed on us were just convenient excuses for him to avoid taking responsibility.

We are on the lookout for backsliding, but as of right now he has had all of his privileges restored and things around here seem to be on the mend, emotionally speaking.

I still almost can't believe it. It has been a miserable 4+ years in terms of family life. I kind of don't know how to react to the possibility that it could be a thing of the past.

All my kids still have issues to one degree or another, which I would put mostly on how their mom has parented them and conducted herself (though I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination), but the situation with my oldest was by far the worst and most distracting/destructive.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Southern Illinois and most of Indiana are so backwards and redneck they really should be part of Oklahoma or Kentucky. I realize that doesn't exactly work geographically, but it still just makes sense.

Southern Illinois is a #### hole.  Not to mention that I-57 to I-70 is one of the worst speed traps and gas station gouging in the country.  

Only saving grace is that it's full of Dairy Queens.  Top restaurant in most towns.

I don't know, the Mason-Dixon line is really more I-70 across western PA through Dayton, OH - Terre Haute - and ####ville Effingham.

it was in the two southern illinois towns i visited. seemed weird to me then. 

 
Another important update:

We had a meeting today with our architect (and our contractor).

The architect was wearing a scarf, along with an English style driving hat, and eyeglasses with translucent red frames. @El Floppo

This seems like pretty standard architect accessorizing, except that he went to Washington State University, where mens' accessories are more typically things like waders, gun racks and sixers of Milwaukee's Best.

I went to a wedding in storm lake Iowa in the 90's  my hair went half way down my back. I stood out, just a bit.  Holy #### it was weird

 
I know poker is dead and I don't tell bad beat stories, but last night in hold em, in one orbit, i flopped a set and lost to top pair, top kicker catching runner runner spades for the nut flush, flopped a straight and flush draw and lost all in to a guy with an underpair, then flopped another set and got all in on the flop against a guy with ace ten on a ten eight deuce board when the turn and river were both aces. What. The. ####.

I did this to my dad's second wife.. I took my parents' breakup hard and couldn't stand to look at her.  Took me 10 years to let it go.  Good for your son being far less of an idiot and far less stubborn than I was. :thumbup:

Are your kids staying close with each other?  My brother and I both kind of withdrew from family and my one true regret in this life was drifting apart from him for several years.. right when we both likely needed each other most.  If I ever get divorced, this will be my top priority - making sure my kids stick together at all cost.

True story - I've been to the DQ right next to their corporate headquarters (Edina, MN home of the ice cream cakeaters). 

They regularly test new products there and if you participate they'll give you free ice cream.

Buddy and I were watching Iowa State/Kansas last night and wondering aloud if Iowa State was the worst Big12 school to go to.  I countered with Baylor, but at least Waco is close enough to Dallas and Austin to provide escape.  I mentioned a friend from the internet who did a tour of duty there and had nothing nice to say about Ames, Iowa.  Can't imagine Kansas State is a garden oasis either.

I played poker every day against a coworker for 3 years and I still have no idea what this means.  I need a translator for poker jargon.
