GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (19 Viewers)

I need info on how to be able to watch the teevee without having cable/satellite.  Is there a Cliff's Notes version of the 120-page thread on this topic?
Depends on what you want to watch.

If geography/terrain allows, you can get an antenna to get all of your over-the-air channels.

For streaming services like Netflix/Prime/Hulu, etc... you either need a smart TV or a streaming device like Roku/Amazon Fire TV, etc... along with WiFi and wa la.

There are also "skinny bundle" services like Sling where, for $20-40/month you can stream a collection of regular cable networks like ESPN, AMC, FX. I think Playstation has something similar.

The kodi thing O mentioned, is beyond my ability to explain or even understand.
tl;dr version Kodi is the Napster of TV.

Thanks, Uruk and Osaurus!  An antenna won't be possible for the same reason cable/satellite won't be available.  The TV is a smart TV so I'm covered on...something?

I don't watch much TV but would like to have the local networks, the news networks, Discovery, whatever Better Call Saul is on (AMC?), ESPN, that's about it.
So Kodi (I don't think) won't be able to get locals. You should be able to get all the shows you want but I am unsure of using it to get live ESPN, locals or News.

SlingTV sounds like a good fit, although I'm not sure what you could do about local networks - google says locals are available in "select markets only", but those links all go to a sling.com page, which is blocked at work.

What would you have for internet service? Mobile data?
There's Wi-fi.  That's about all I know.  What do I need to know?  Pretend I'm as lost on this as GM would be lost on...well, this.

I had to get a basic cable package so I could get locals because I live too far out to get them with an antenna. I wasn't willing to give up live local broadcasts.

I'm not sure what you can do about locals, but check out the Sling site for their bundles. You can also toggle back & forth between their options at any time with no penalty.

Do you have a Netflix or Prime account?

Yeah, not that hard if you have WiFi. Get a roku stick and an amplified HD indoor antenna. You'll pick up some local channels with the antenna  (ABC, NBC, etc) and you'll be able to stream the better channels/movies via the roku. The only bills you will have (aside from the WiFi cost) are the subscriptions you are accessing via the roku (netflix, Amazon prime, hbo, etc).

Clear as mud?

You can get Stars, Showtime, AMC, etc through Amazon streaming now, and HBO has a standalone streaming service. Basically, you need local channels and other than that you can do everything through a Roku stick.

Thanks!  I know about 20% of those words. :excited:

@krista4

With your smart TV and a WiFi connection, you'll be able to stream anything you either have a subscription for or is free. Your TV will come with many streaming apps already loaded, like Netflix & Prime. All you have to do is connect and log into your account on the TV. Others, you can search for on the TV when you're in the smart/app section.

I think PBS is free and has a load of back-eps for stuff like This Old House. As said above, HBO has a stand-alone app for $15/month for their content. I believe CBS has one, too, for like $5/month but it's not live TV - like HBO's and all of the others, it's on-demand stuff

Any of this alternate TV talk include live sports?  That's always been the thing that kept me tied to cable.
ESPN and FS1 are on sling, but I think most people use an HD antenna for live sports on OTA channels.  It's just way better quality anyway.

Excellent.  The ones here were super excellent. :lmao:

was hoping for a hard "all"
yeah, it's not flawless.

I don't use it for sports personally so I can't vouch for it, but I'm sure others do.

I think most people use a HD antennae for local channels, and probably sling or something for ESPN.

but you can usually find NHL, NFL games etc on there with no issues I think.

Holy crap, I'm laughing uncontrollably at this video.  It's two college friends that record each other saying "F YOU" to the other from various locations and momentous occasions.  NOT SAFE FOR WORK because of the F-word, but holy crap, this is funny to me.  YMMV.

Shuke, I feel like we squandered a golden opportunity.

I think it was clearly implied in all of the eat off videos.

I use it almost exclusively for sports, and have had no issues finding a stream for any sporting event I have wanted to see.

YMMV because I am not watching ESPN, and have never tried to.

####### great

OK, thank you to all the smart people for the help.  Do I have this right:

1. I can stream lots of stuff from Netflix and Prime because I'll have a smart TV.  Does this mean I don't need the Roku thingie, or does it add something else I'm missing?

2. To get locals I'd be best using an HD antenna.  Maybe this will be possible...not sure...any recommendations/links to one?

3. For streaming sports the Kodi thingie is good.

4. For non-local channels not available via #1 above, maybe sling.tv

So I need 4-5 things to get most, but not all, of what I am looking for? :kicksrock:

What was the reason cable or satellite wasn't an option?

A "Smart TV" has Roku or Roku-like features built in.  It will have wifi capability and almost certainly apps for Netflix and Prime, among others.

What do you watch on locals and the non local stations? Most shows are available on Kodi, even local network shows. You'll have issues finding news though I think. So the Smart TV handles the paid streaming (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc) and Kodi the rest. TBH I think Kodi can handle all of it, even movies in the theaters now are available.
