GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (6 Viewers)

Great show.   Fascinating stuff.  Being from SoCal around the same time period, I knew a lot of the Ruthless/Death Row/Aftermath stuff, but Dre's story is always compelling.  The Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks story was new to me.
I thought the parallels between Bruce Springsteen and Dr. Dre were pretty interesting too. Both just uncompromising perfectionists with no use for deadlines.

I just spent 2 1/2 hours with a mortgage guy running through different scenarios.   This will be the sixth house I've bought in my life (so I have like 5% of Krista's experience).  I didn't spend 2 1/2 hours with a mortgage guy in the other 5 purchases combined, and twice I never even met the broker.

I feel like I was an idiot for not wanting to understand every detail and run through each scenario before.   My finances were a lot less complicated then so I suppose that makes a difference, but still.   Someone needed to tell me what I didn't know.

Getting a mortgage is now a lot tougher than it was in the past too. The banking sector does plenty of things wrong, but they are good at fighting the last battle. There won't be a housing crisis because of lax underwriting standards anytime soon.

In regards to the talk of parents today, I really wish all of yours the best. Sincerely.

But, someone mentioned trying to focus on the good memories, and that inspired my to pass on some of the greatest wisdom my father has ever given me. You may even want to take notes; its that good.

Earlier today, I took some time off from work to treat my parent to a late dinner (@3:30 pm...late for them that is). I was in my work truck, so I used their vehicle to drive them to the restaurant. Pop is 83 and can barely walk now (really bad knees); Mom is 80 and is in awesome shape. Both of their minds are still strong, but Pop has a way of being verbose.

Anyways, it has been very hot and muggy in Louisville all week (mid 90's), and air conditioning, thus, became the topic of focus during our ride. This is when Pops dropped the wisdom bomb.

"Son...ya know...car like these...ours that is...that your driving now....well, they have windows. And when I was young, my car had windows like this too. And...when I was still low on the totem pole at work...well...I had to park in the sun. When that happens, these windows make the car hot. And when that happens, the AC just won't cool it right on start up. The secret ya, is to open the windows...let your ac run for a while, and then, ya can close the windows again. Oh, also, if your driving down the road...anytime time really...and it gets too hot...ya think maybe the ac isn't work'in well...well then...just open the windows. It can help."

In years past (I'm 49 now), this would of steamed me....enough to open a window.

But these days, I just smile and say, "Thanks Pop...that'll come in handy!" :)
This is a metaphor, right?  The thing better than a lock?

Buying the house two doors down while still owning the other one required mountains to be moved and an examination of my finances that felt like a shower scene from OZ.  God bless my GB Fred who pushed it through for me because I told him there was no Plan B and failure was not an option.

I'll never do that again......

I had a similar experience when I tried to finance our new purchase without selling our existing house. In my case it was a bridge too far.

Kinda wishing that had been an end of it right now.

You need Plan B.  Seriously.

Hmmm....

...actually, it is as verbatim as my memory can accomplish after a few hours. But if it serves as a metaphor as well...

...then I guess I am batting 2.000!  :excited:

BTW: I am not familiar with, "The thing better than a lock". Does it relate?

old yeller board FFA smackoff.   "Best Invention Ever" was between the metaphor and the lock.

Ya know GM...

The more I think about this, the more inclined I am to give Pops credit for being such a subtle son of a sophist...

...that his densed down son (me) missed too much of his metaphor in the past...to be a better berserk:rant:

Thanks mang! :)

PSA for Seattle-area people:  Mr krista has decided his dream is to open a sausage-y restaurant ala Hot Doug's in Chicago (RIP) or Munchen Haus in Leavenworth.  Please be prepared to be sausage-tasting ( :oldunsure:  ) guinea pigs for the foreseeable future.

You guys really need to come out this way.  I'll take you to Red Hots and Rhein Haus in Tacoma.  Rhein Haus has four bocce ball courts inside the bar.

I had several "secret" spots in my home town that involved climbing fences and/or trees to gain access to the biggest, juiciest and less attainable ones at the top of the bushes. this invariably led to falling face first into the bowels of that giants scratchy weed beast.

we also had cherry plumbs grow wild.. many backyards were broken into to gain access to the best of these.
We had hundreds of wild mulberry trees around us growing up.  I would eat a couple pounds a day during the summer.

I grew up in Louisville and have a bunch of family (brother, nephew, stepmother, lots of other stepfamily) still there.  Which area are you in?  Was last there in May for my nephew's graduation from Manual (where everyone is a valedictorian!).

Rhein Haus sounds great.  Maybe combine it with some house-hunting?
possibly.  have an appointment to see the one with the boat launch tomorrow.  I know the neighborhood and the location is perfect.  If it's in good shape I may just make an offer.

Hmmmm...I was at old yeller, but never went to the FFA then.
You didn't miss much.  Did you catch the part where there was A ####ING DEBATE ON WHETHER A LOCK OR METAPHOR WAS THE BEST INVENTION EVER?

NO SAUSAGE WAY?!?!?!?!?  :excited:

I grew up in Cloverfield....near Iroquois Park. I went to Saint Helen grade school (Dixie Hwy)....then St. Xavier HS....followed by 6 years at U of L.

I bought  a house on Wizard Ave. in 1993...where I can see  the horses runs at Churchill from my front porch and upstairs window...still live there (anathema to you obviously....living so long in one abode... ;) ).

Let me know when/if  you come back local. I will throw a party!

Love it!

I think I'm supposed to dislike St X as a rival of Manual.  I dunno.  St X are the rich people, right?  I actually went to school across the river at New Albany HS.  [Insert "Bulldoll" joke here.]

Love the area you're living in!  Louisville has changed so much since when I last lived there, all for the better I think.  Great dining scene.  My step-cousin owns La Chasse, if you've ever gone there...so many great restaurants in the area now.  And the riverfront has been developed beautifully.  And the new bridge!  And walking the old bridge!  If it weren't for the weather and the churches, I think I could live there.

ETA:  Also a fantastic music scene.

Also, just to show how foolish I am...

..it was Cloverleaf!

Smoked too much leaf....

...parents are sad.  :(
