Speaking of Wisconsin.... My dad's best friend who lived in suburban Chicago had a cabin in Door County. Probably went there 3-4 times as a teen with the guy's kids (basically my cousins) and would always have a blast. I remember I was there right when the drinking age was on the cusp of going from 18 to 21. I was a few weeks away from turning 18 and they gave me a beer (in one of those small tavern-style glasses).

Went to a packers game. Furley chose his wife’s bday, or was it his? Over cornholing with us. Drank waaaaaaaaaaay too much. Packers blew out the raiders. I wore a sleeveless shirt to the game. Some sweet grandma behind me kept imploring me to put on my coat. Good peeps up there

Door County is pretty sweet. As much as anything in Wisconsin can be anyway.

I've been to Wisconsin once.

Once or twice for me. Previous job we called on heavy truck and diesel engine makers (Cummins, CAT, Volvo, etc)
We were also trying to get in at places like kohler, Harley, mercury marine. I know we stayed a night in fon du lac. Had a German colleague with me and he blurts out over dinner “man there are a lot of fat girls in Wisconsin “. FWIW this dude was no looker, one coworker said he looks like he drives an ice cream truck

Anyway, I got to visit all kinds of cool places like Columbus IN (and Seymour too). Oh and Indy. That was cool because we got st Elmo’s on the company dime. Other joys were Fort Wayne and Hagerstown Maryland

Is Dan having a stroke?

Imma dial 9-1...and keep my finger on the 1. (At least until my second scotch of the evening kicks in)

Blink twice if you need CPR, mang.

An 18 year old can drink in a bar here as long as a parent is alongside and gives permission.

I frequent Milwaukee since Mrs. O is from there and I went to high school and college (undergrad) there. I’ve been camping, fishing, and hiking all over the rest of the state too. It’s a great place and by the sounds of it, winters have become milder. They were not mild when I lived there and hated every minute of winter and spring. One of my favorite places to be in the entire state is Nicolet National Forest. It’s beautiful up there (not in winter).

lol, i think that was my wife's birthday then if it was cold

Heading there next weekend for golf and beer. Good times. Oh and to support the Indians on the way back.

how, if at all, does one deal with reactance in an adult?
provide the illusion of choice.
tips on how? i'm not smart.
Is reactance like coincidance?
Yo flop,

Looks like we’ll be farting around the Chelsea market in the afternoon on 7/14.
7/15 911 museum Brooklyn bridge walk + pizza. Our evening is more or less free
7/16 pretty wide open atm.

Love to see you and yours if any of that works. We are staying in Chelsea.

After a pleasant morning exploring Sequoia National Park, we exited the park looking for our campsite that Google maps said was "10 miles away". WRONG! Due to road closures and unpaved fire roads not suitable for a 2-wheel drive minivan piloted by a buffoon, it took us 3 hours to find our "campsite".

Upon arrival, we first encountered a team of smoke-jumping firefighters doing control burns near the site - not great, Bob. Then where a camp host was supposed to be, we met 2 huge, angry looking black cows. No other campers around. No humans. Site number 5 looked like something out of a dystopian hellscape. No trees for shade in 107 degree heat. Overgrown vegetation and uglier than sin overall.

So we did what any family absent cell service, reliable maps or clue would do in this situation: ham and egg our way south on any road possible and hope like hell we'd end up in the all American city of Bakersfield!

Once we got cell service, I texted our old buddy Tanner who gave us a great hotel rec on the "safe side" of Bakersfield and man, was he spot on! Great hotel with a pool, next to every chain restaurant in the world and staffed by very friendly people. Great late night dinner at Yard House, which was bumping at 9pm, super service and a terrific end to a hectic and at times frightening day. Not sure how many of you have tried to navigate the roads around Dunlap, CA but if you have, you know what I'm talking about. Whooof.

5/5 stars to Bakersfield, CA and to Tanner for saving the day and giving us a fresh start to our next adventure on this 18-day road trip. Off to Big Bear, CA for 4 nights at my cousin's house (available on Abnb if you're curious) where temps won't crack 90 and will get down below 60 at night. Ahhhhhhhh.

After that, another date with legendary @Bob Sacamano

The campground you recommended is temporarily closed. That's a common thing for Sequoia. Roads, campgrounds, attractions, hikes...closed.

Big Bear until Mon. Cousin's house is perfect. Billiards, shuffleboard, hot tub. I can see the chairlift from her driveway.

Azteca is the name of the restaurant. Have fun! Are in moon ridge? My sisters place is on the golf course right by bear mountain.

We haven't explored the town at all yet, so not sure where we are other than an address and we can walk to 7/11 from here in 3 minutes (thanks free Slurpee day!). We arrived yesterday tired, fried and in desperate need of a chill day.

Gonna take the twins disc golfing this morning and will get the lay of the land.

this should be an interesting trip if you let " 2 huge, angry looking black cows" chase you from your first destination.
chances are you may encounter even more scary critters while camping.
just sayin'

I’ve been at the new house in Wisconsin for a month. Haven’t had to use a sleeping pill once.

Also, the pain and pit I had in my stomach for the last 12 years is gone. All that stress - gone.

67 degrees right now and sleeping with the windows open. Heaven.

Jelly

Hoping to move back to Michigan within the next few years

Moved to Wisconsin for the following reasons:

1. Son is playing college football this fall in Wisconsin. Campus is about 4 hours from our front door vs 10 from KC.
2. Wife and I are gonna retire up here anyway
3. 16 year old son wants a career in the trades and the high school here can set him up as an apprentice for local companies starting this fall. He also loves fishing and would rather do that than anything, and there is world class fishing within about 10 minutes from my land.
4. Daughter and me hate the heat.
5. Our whole family loves the outdoors and hiking and fishing.

It's beautiful here.

Sounds idyllic, great job choosing a better quality of life

If I'm ranking Midwest states - old Northwest Territory purchase only, I'm sorry Plains states, but you're not in the club:
  1. Minnesota
  2. Michigan
  3. Wisconsin
  4. Illinois
  5. Indiana
  6. O-hi-O

I remember my brother had awful timing in the 70s. When he was in middle school, Michigan was the first state to lower the drinking age to 18.

The year he became an adult, they raised the drinking age in Michigan from 18 to 19. Three weeks later they raised it back to 21.
