Part of what's made this awful... The disease itself. ALS is a nightmare. But also, I was close with my parents - nothing unsaid and very supportive. I lost my dad when my wife was pregnant with my oldest. The realization that it's just me and my brother- who, tbh, I've never been close with.. not antagonist at all, just never close... Dunno. That void is massive. That loss of support- massive. Not being able to ever talk with her again- and I've found myself daily with little things that I'd normally reach out about and then realize I can't... Ever again.

After my dad, I know life continues and you have to make the most of it. But that new void that was such a huge part of my and my family's life... Awful.

I watched it again a month or so ago and it still is a fantastic as ever.

I've watched it at least 5 times in my life and still think it's one of the greatest westerns ever put to film. The acting is just incredible and that cast is going to go down as one of the greatest ever assembled.

Never read the book, though I did read "Streets of Laredo" which was also fantastic. I might need to dust off Lonesome Dove one day - I have a copy somewhere.

Also, the pain and pit I had in my stomach for the last 12 years is gone. All that stress - gone.

1. Son is playing college football this fall in Wisconsin. Campus is about 4 hours from our front door vs 10 from KC.
2. Wife and I are gonna retire up here anyway
3. 16 year old son wants a career in the trades and the high school here can set him up as an apprentice for local companies starting this fall. He also loves fishing and would rather do that than anything, and there is world class fishing within about 10 minutes from my land.
4. Daughter and me hate the heat.
5. Our whole family loves the outdoors and hiking and fishing.

Yeah, we got really fortunate. Ended up on 8 acres in the middle of nowhere. 50% timber and 50% meadow.

I live between two towns with 3200 residents and 8000 residents respectively. Both about 22 minutes from my house.

I can see the stars again. No light pollution at all. Absolute quiet other than the wind and the birds. Occasionally I will hear some ATV's riding the trails down the road. There is a bar at the end of my street. I can be on the water in about 15 minutes and there may be only one or two other boats on the water.

The next day I can choose from one of 50 other lakes within 30 minutes of the house.

Both of my boys have jobs already in town. My daughter loves the weather and the hiking.

Love it here so far. Ask me again in February.

sadly a first time dui in wisconsin is not even a criminal offense is it a civil citation the culture of binge drinking and being ok with the results of that in this state is nothing we should be proud of yet you will have a lot of people boast about it which is basically like saying look how stupid i am take that to the bank brochacho

That's awesome. Congrats! I spent a bit of time in Sheboygan and Appleton a while back and loved it. Super chill vibe. I found it a lot like some places in the South just a different accent and much better bratwurst. And more beer.

It is insidious. My MIL has had it for a little over a year. Lost my father in law to it two years ago, after a 20 year fight. My own father passed in 2016 after a 5 year battle.

It is incredibly devastating to lose a parent. At least with ALS you have some time to create some lasting memories and say everything you wanted to say. But losing them quickly is not less crippling.

My mom suffered a massive stroke in 2011. It happened between 5:30 and 5:45 pm on a Monday; I spoke to her a few minutes earlier after the Tigers hit a homer in the playoffs to take the lead. The call came less than an hour later, the next morning they gave us the Cat Scan results at 6 a.m. Two days later we had a private ceremony, turned the machines off, and she passed in 20 minutes.

There is nothing I can write that will make anything better. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. I do think important to let yourself feel the pain; don’t push it down or try to act like it’s not there. In some strange way that acknowledgement is part of the healing process.

3. 16 year old son wants a career in the trades and the high school here can set him up as an apprentice for local companies starting this fall. He also loves fishing and would rather do that than anything, and there is world class fishing within about 10 minutes from my land.
4. Daughter and me hate the heat.

That is so awesome. I want to retire so badly. I envision that it will feel something close to what you’re describing.

Yeah, we got really fortunate. Ended up on 8 acres in the middle of nowhere. 50% timber and 50% meadow.

I live between two towns with 3200 residents and 8000 residents respectively. Both about 22 minutes from my house.

I can see the stars again. No light pollution at all. Absolute quiet other than the wind and the birds. Occasionally I will hear some ATV's riding the trails down the road. There is a bar at the end of my street. I can be on the water in about 15 minutes and there may be only one or two other boats on the water.

The next day I can choose from one of 50 other lakes within 30 minutes of the house.

Both of my boys have jobs already in town. My daughter loves the weather and the hiking.

Love it here so far. Ask me again in February.

madison is having a hell of a housing crisis right now and it is amazing to me how fast it is growing especially on the west side of the city the beltline is overwhelmed and it is crazy how much traffic there is i love it but man is it a boom town right now take that to the bank brochacho
