GM's thread about nothing (14 Viewers)

I'm on board with downtown. Might as well see the city a bit if you haven't been here much.

What about West Sixth? J Blacks or Opal Divines?

Edited to add Ranch 616. That's more of a cosjobs place. I'm not a fan of $20 quail but thought I'd present it as an option.
Whatever. What about bbq? I had Stubbs last time I was here but wouldn't mind trying something different.
Sounds cool.Lamberts is kinda fancy BBQ but I like it. Iron Works is more traditional like Stubbs. Haven't been there in a while, but I've always enjoyed it.
Last 2x I went to Lamberts I was very disappointed.Iron Works, imo, is only good until about 2pm

I was in Lockhart this afternoon and brought back a few smoked chickens (dieting).

How about Matt's El Rancho? Not exactly downtown, but a real Austin place. Lots of fun.

Happy Hour at the Driskill would be fun. Even after Happy Hour, its just a little more expensive. Not interested in blowing $80 for fancy #### at the Grill, but the burger at the bar is world class.

McCormick & Schmidt's is one of my faves but they are in about every city now, so no sense doing it here.

How about Eddie V's if you want fancy?

Generally bbq is a lunch food
Does not compute.
BBQ is cooked overnight and tiemd to be at its peak for the lunch crowd. Most cue joints do 80-90% of their biz at lunch. Dinner gets the leftovers. It might be good, but you are getting out of their wheelhouse. (Salt Lick is an exception and Lamberts may be, but I have not had a good brisket at Lambert's lunch or dinner).

A run to Salt Lick would be fun. Generally bbq is a lunch food, but Salt Lick is an exception. Only prob with them is the only good location is out SW of town and one person would need to be sober to drive back.
Screw it then, I'm out. Are you still coming up to the NW this month?
Left you a vm just this afternoon. I get into Portland the 25th and will be at the Benson Downtown thru Mon 1/29. We leave the 31st. I left a couple days open at the end of the trip, in case the weather cleared and we wanted to do a run to the coast or Mt Hood or something. If you can come, a $71 bid on a four star downtown hotel at Priceline should get you the Benson. THey are still offering to let me add additional days at that rate. Maybe you could get Pigskin or Drifter or Proninja or Jack to carpool down for a night?

I'm down in San Jose for business, coming back the night of the 25th. I may be able to run down the evening of the 28th and go back the 29th (Sunday).

I think Austin hates me.

I was in that town for only about 3 total hours yesterday, and I was sick as a dog before getting back home. Still feel like crap today. Happens almost every time I am there.

Austin, I love you so much, I want to be in you....why do you push me away so???

I am 50/50 to attend as long as the choice of location isn't deep south Austin. The prospects of me driving 45 minutes south, getting drunk, and driving home are not good. Downtown or anywhere north-ish would be slid for me.

And I will sport my UHEM threads if I attend so that I'm easy to find.

Just found out that my stepdad's lung cancer has moved to his spine. The only thing the hospital is doing today is upping his morphine script. Just last week he talked about going back to work.

#### you cancer.

so sorry to hear this.Bring him home if you can- or a hospice. Get him out of the hospital for his final days if there's anyway to do so.

I'm taking the Jeopardy test Thursday.
 Good luck. When in doubt always answer "Henrik Ibsen"
I passed the qualifying test, but never got the call... :kicksrock:
The online test? The year before I was on I had passed the 'brick and mortar' test down in Culver City. Never got called either. That was also the year the Jennings hack cheated his way through a bunch of games. I think his run screwed up the contestant pool.
no, I did the "brain bus" test when it came through San Diego. written test followed by the mock game--killed it on the mock game.
They won't come out and say it but there is sort of a quota system when it comes to contestants. They do whatever they can to try to make the pool as diverse as possible. For whatever reason the majority of people that try out AND pass the test are white dudes, over 30, probably some sort of professional or at least with a decent job.Let's say they've got 100 people that have passed the test and didn't crap the bed during the mock game. The majority of them are going to fit the profile above. The rest of the pack is composed of women, non-white folk, older people, younger people etc. They're going to try to bring in as many of the minority group as possible.
