Married/engaged guys> how much input did your ladyfriend have on her ring?

(and yes, Tanner, I know the whole ring thing is an atrocity that the diamond industry has thrust upon us)

A lot. I popped the question, and then we had a ring custom-designed together. It was a lot of fun, I'm glad I didn't buy the ring myself beforehand.

I think the guy should always have an idea on what the girl likes in a ring. Some girls might like a plain, princess cut solitaire (which looks the best, imo) but other girls like all the little diamonds along side a slightly bigger, middle diamond, for example. It's an expensive purchase. The girl should be happy with what she's getting.

I picked the rock - she picked the ring/setting.Embarrassing myself here, but when I went ring shopping, I assumed all settings/rings were included in the price of the diamond. I knew about how much I wanted to spend, and found the nicest diamond I could, it is near flawless (Granted it's not very large, but still, it was very pricey). Well, my wife found a ring setting she loved....and of course it was platinum ;) with 6 diamond baggets (sp?) :X I should have known better. Anyway, by this time it was too late :)

Side note, platinum is not a very strong metal, so if you go platinum, be prepared to spend to repair from time to time and find a solid jeweler :wall:

My wife wore my grandmother's depression era wedding ring. Really cool looking with a tiny diamond. She later replaced that ring with a cubics sir conium that she gets complimented on all the time.SUCKA MCs!

I have a really stunning antique platinum ring with three decent-sized (3/4-1 carat) diamonds I'd be willing to part with for the right price. ;) :firstmarriage: The center diamond is from the 1890s and the setting and other diamonds from the 20s or 30s.

Actually, does anyone know of a good way to sell this? Damn thing appraised for $14,000, but on eBay people only bid it up to about $4K.

I know nothing specifically on this topic but maybe you can get a deal with a larger, local jewelry shop and have them sell it for you via consignment? Maybe give them 20% or so.

I had an idea of what she liked/wanted and went and picked out a few on my own. Then we went together where she tried on a bunch, including the ones I picked out (unbeknownst to her). She then narrowed it down to three or four that she really liked and I went back a few weeks later and got one of them.

Yes, that's probably a good idea. I don't know what consignment guys generally get, but 20% sounds OK to me. I only paid $6,750 so have a lot of flexibility on what I get out of it.

Do you have an extra jewelry insurance policy?? You could always "lose" it and have insurance give you the money for a replacement. When my wife was pregnant with baby #1 she stopped wearing her rings, after our daughter came she started to only wear her wedding ring as she did not want scratch the baby with the massive diamonds on her engagement ring. Fast forward a year and she was looking for the engagement ring to start wearing it. We looked everywhere, all the dresser drawers, behind the furniture, under the bed, anywhere it might have fallen. We ended up assuming we had vacuumed it up and threw it out. Called up the insurance guy and they gave us a check for the current value of it (no deductible), and were able to get it replaced for that amount. Three months later we found the ring under a power strip in the bedroom. Now my wife has a "spare" ring which I call our rainy day fund.

I wouldn't mind at all. I'm not a fan of diamonds and would never buy a new ring, but I do love antiques, and this ring is incredibly cool in that regard, in terms of its design.

:lmao:Come to think of it, at the moment I don't know where it is, after re-hiding it from the cleaning ladies a couple of times. ;)

Nope. I don't care if they make diamonds out of baby pandas. The whole industry is rigged.

It appears PokerStars is giving $50 for 3,000 FPP's until the 25th as part of the countdown to the 50 billionth hand dealt, FYI.

Married/engaged guys> how much input did your ladyfriend have on her ring? (and yes, Tanner, I know the whole ring thing is an atrocity that the diamond industry has thrust upon us)
I think the guy should always have an idea on what the girl likes in a ring. Some girls might like a plain, princess cut solitaire (which looks the best, imo) but other girls like all the little diamonds along side a slightly bigger, middle diamond, for example. It's an expensive purchase. I wholeheartedly agree with your last point, but I'm finding it a little difficult due to my involvement in this process. I want him to do it mostly on his own, as does he. However, we have very different tastes in most everything so a while back he asked me to pick out a couple of settings, etc. that I liked.I cooled my heels on it for a while but yesterday we went looking together. I liked two settings/looks and I know he'll pick the one he likes better. At this point, I want to leave it in his hands completely, but there's a teeny, tiny part of me that wants to see it through since it's what I'll be wearing forever. And BTW, this is the part where I am really shallow and hate myself for it, so flame away.

Not at all. If I was a woman and had to wear something forever I wouldn't trust a man to pick it out.

Shouldn't you be hoping for something that your hoarding MIL will like so she doesn't nag you about it. "YSR, your ring is pretty, but I think it would look better if it was this setting."

Great point. I bought my wife the diamond style she wanted as a solitaire in an engagement ring, then had it reset in the setting of her choice as a wedding ring.

I knew her jewelry preferences well enough that I bought it for her and got the surprise value. If I hadn't been certain, though, I would never have tried guessing.

We picked out an engagement and wedding ring set together. When hubby bought it he went with the bigger diamond. When he gave it to me, we returned it and got the smaller one. I'm not one for big diamonds and hate the idea of wearing however many months salary...my set was a weeks salary. It's a symbol of love and commitment, not greed and debt.

Pretty sure she went to my cousin's place and picked everything out.

I few months after we got engaged we were having drinks when some old guy (70's?) approaches our table, looks at the rings and says "You must have been very good girl to get a ring like that. Or very, very, bad."
