GM's thread about nothing (55 Viewers)

Abe - cool guy in real life
Was very disappointed that he and Buck weren't there Sunday. I knew I'd miss GM but didn't know how much my delayed arrival would make a difference. :(
As it is, I'm watching "flight" at home and eating triscuits. So maybe you didn't miss much.
I don't know; I've always thought you were interesting on here anyway. Next time!Speaking of next time, I feel like I saw none of Austin, perhaps because I saw only the airport and hotel airport environs, plus AO. I had hoped to audition it for possible Kristarelocation. Any thoughts from locals or near-locals are appreciated. Will say that the biggest impediment to me would be having to say I'm a Texan (sorry bentley).
Ummmm......I'm pretty sure that we wouldn't let you claim that even if you wanted to. One doesn't simply become a Texan because they happened to stop by for a little while. I'm a fifth-generation Texan and there are people that think I'm a n00b.Austin's obviously a great town and the least Texan of all the Texas cities in a way. We still elect Democrats to all of our city and most of our state political positions. The city is slightly bigger and the metro area is quite a bit bigger than Memphis. You have to go to Houston (or Dallas) for all your real big city culture, but neither of them are that far away. The Hill Country is beautiful. Summers are insanely hot. We have a couple of huge music festivals in the spring (SxSW) and fall (Austin City Limits). We have a lot of disc golf courses and our own Formula 1 track (the only one in the USA). You and Mr. Krista would be more than welcome at the bentley family tailgate bus for every Longhorn home game.
I've been down for SXSW as I've had lots of friends play there, but even so I'm not sure I've had a true flavor. Truly, if it weren't in Texas, I wouldn't hesitate to put it near the top of my list, from what I know and what I've seen (admittedly not enough). And again no offense to the rest of Texas, which has some good stuff but is just not for me in many ways. And though I didn't think I should add my "here's my take on everyone" to the others since (1) I wasn't at coshole that long and (2) I don't write as well as some of the others (Bogart, Guster, etc.), let me say that my biggest surprise on Sunday was probably bentley. I didn't have the "wrong" impression that some did of a guy who was surly--all my indications were nice guy--but I was just blown away by how genuinely friendly and interested in talking he was. Let's be clear, bentley is ridiculously good-looking to a point where I thought he would be a "too cool" guy but is actually just the most chill and genuine person who is actually interested in getting to know you. Someone described him as the best of what Texas is known for. If that's true, then give me Texas all the way. Yee-haw.
That's cute and all. But my family is from Tennessee. And I've been from one side of 40 to the other. And I love Tennessee. But texas is texas, and everywhere else isn't. And if you think Bentley was hot you should have seen stu (also texas) working his magic.
I don't get most of that. But bentley is hot. Stu has magic. They're entirely different things. Let's not get into a debate here about which cosjobian is hottest. That would be...awkward.
Well, whatever. My point is that texas rules. And I'm a Tennessee guy.

Oh, OK. I have lived in TN for three years. I don't give a #### about TN and don't use it as a comparison to anything. Hence, I had no idea what you were talking about.

Ok, so where do you like living? I've been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces (rocked them all) and can offer some input as to where texas ranks.

Well now Krista is making me blush. One interesting thing for me about the weekend was that there were several unique styles of good time party drunks there, but everyone got along pretty darn well. I think Guster would be at the top of my list of guys to get hammered with in the future, though it would likely cause my wife to get very angry.

I really have to meet this Angry Wife. I've been fascinated by this for years.

I don't like any place conservative. I don't like any place religious. I don't like any place with low IQs, or bad drivers, or people who have never lived anywhere else in their ####### lives, or who like chain restaurants or monster trucks. I think my needs are simple. Whatcha got?

I spent a week and a half in and around Austin, and I loved the town. It was very un-Texasy. In fact, I did hear someone in Killeen say in a deep drawl "Austin isn't Texas." so there's that. It reminded me of Portland a lot, and Portland is one of my favorite cities ever. Only with better weather. It wasn't like being in Texas at all.
:goodposting:

yeah, none of the above describes Austin, at all... with the possible exception of bad drivers, but those are everywhere.

I feel like explaining this to you would only foster more confusion. You're friends with me on Facebook and LinkedIn, yet this is somehow a mystery to you.
I don't recall seeing anything on Facebook. You really think I'm studying career paths of my linkedin "friends"?But I just checked. Job description seems pretty made up.

Except the driving.
AMEN! I've been to many places, and driving in Seattle is among the worst I've experienced.

Seattle traffic is the pits, but people are pretty considerate drivers there.

Well yeah, but where do they not have bad drivers?

Are we drinking during said chess tournament? Either way I like my chances, but I would hedge my bets and put money on Romo. Even if he's never played, I think he figures out how to win.

Nam is pretty awesome, if you're not my dad...if you are, well then you pretty much hate everything asian. Here's hoping he doesn't know how much asian porn I watch.

:lmao: Okay.

Delivered where?

Newsflash, folks. I don't live in Iowa.
ORLY?
Did you think I was just being a #### when I said I didn't want to meet up with you when you were in Des Moines?
Would you be offended if I said yes?
No, but it would be a weird assumption for you to make.
I figured you lived in a suburb and were getting off on a technicality. It's ok. I didn't make a huge effort. Where you living these days?

I don't like any place conservative. I don't like any place religious.
Texas is conservaitve and religious. Austin is not
I don't like any place with low IQs,
Austin people are fairly smart and don't spend a lot of time watching the kardashians
or bad drivers,
or people who have never lived anywhere else in their ####### lives,
fastest growing city in the country, but the job and housing market are strong.
or who like chain restaurants
we have great food.
or monster trucks.
Cut me some slack on the trucks, okay?
I think my needs are simple. Whatcha got?
Welcome home.

I looked you up on facebook to try and figure out where you were, but then I got distracted and just looked at pics of your wife the whole time. Sorry.

I like Austin a lot. Reminds me of Madison or Ashville or something along those lines. Hard to believe a little liberal outpost exists in Texas.

I LOVE both Asheville and Madison. If it's that with better weather, then that sounds great.
This Romo who doesn't look like Romo guy seems a little too wound up to be any fun. Amirite?
Romo indeed looked nothing like Romo. Romo indeed (in my limited time) seemed VERY intense. Romo also, in my limited time, seemed like a great guy.

#### all, you know? #### memphis and a ####ty work situation and being unhappy. #### it. I'd give my left nut (literally) to be out from under the hump of bull#### I'm dealing with. And you have a chance to go wherever you want and get a great job and get paid and be happy. Don't you know how AWESOME that chance is? Like (gay) in Good Will Hunting where he tells the guy he has to leave because he owes it to all the dumbasses busting rock? That's you and us GMTANNERS. Well, some of us anyway. I read how you hate your job and how you live in Memphis and I think, "Life is too short to live in Memphis....and it's DEFINITELY too short to hate your job and live in Memphis." So for the rest of us (or just me) that has the kingdom crumbling around us, find somewhere awesome and go be happy. Maybe it's austin, or madison, or Portland, or Barcelona or ####### Fiji, but go. Because between here and there is horse#### but no one can make you realize it but you.

I've heard from Austin friends that its becoming more and more like Dallas every day and losing some of the character that made it so great. People more obsessed with money and status and housing costs shooting up with all the people moving there. No personal experiences but is it getting any less awesome?
