GM's thread about nothing (80 Viewers)

Every now and then I notice a thread and wonder what the hell is going on in it but don't want to bother finding out. Right now I am wondering how there is a 38-page thread on Five Guys. Why does it take 38 pages to say "very good chain burger and fries", undoubtedly followed by "but not as good as [insert whatever your local joint is here]"?

Five Guys thread is top five for me. Great Nipsey and GM shtick in there.

Lots of laughs in there.

search this thread for dogeweather and you get two full pages of results dating back to late January.

I miss DSP

Can't mention dogeweather enough imo.

Although lately (I check it every morning) it's been saying "such frosty" which makes me all stabby, cause that guy is a jerk.

Like most people on the East Coast, we're supposed to get walloped by this storm in my piece of God's country. Upwards of 18" of snow, which is an incredible amount in this area. I have food and plenty of other assorted vices. I also have that damned generator I spent a fortune on last spring, only to have not lost power since - not that I'm wishing for that to happen or anything......
GL GB.

Hunker down and stay safe!

Abe, you are spot on re:processes. I agree fully on that. We need better workflow management tools and training, which won't come from founder.

What we really need is to be free from his direct control a but to execute on the back end and client facing decisions. The struggle he has is simply letting us do our jobs. I think the Ops guy and myself can co-manage the flow and the execution if we had a couple small tools, some trust and a bit more space.

Work

So your GB thorn has decided to pull the trigger and start his own law firm with two other partners. I wasn't necessarily in the market for a change, but an excellent opportunity to get in as a founding (read: equal) partner made it an offer I couldn't refuse, especially once I realized:

1. It would be approximately 12 more years before I reached full partner here, and I'm not young.

2. My clients are mine and not shared, so I expect 90% of them to come with me.

3. I would have complete control over staffing and my income.

My only regret is that I didn't come up with the flaming sledgehammer shtick first.
Congrats GB and good luck!!

Is this why my wife is cheating on me?

Update: She premade a bunch of breakfast sandwiches for me to warm up in the mornings, and then changed the sheets on the bed which she never does. She'll strip the bed and do the wash, but as far as putting new sheets on she's literally never done that by herself in almost 14 years of marriage. She did it today.

I realize the "changing of the sheets" is a pretty big :softball:, yes.

It's like we work at the same place, only you guys have money. My boss had an all hands five weeks ago and tearfully confessed that he has taken the business as far as he could and he simply wasn't cut out to be a CEO. He loved the work, but business leadership wasn't his thing. And nothing has changed. We still chase our tails and waste time and money too often. I ask about standardizing processed and I'm met with  We all agree on what needs to happen and then no one else does their part. And thus I am looking for a new job.

To the discussion at hand, I am going to tell you some bad news that I think you already know: the startup you work for is not going to "tip". You'll add new products just in time to piss off old customers and start anew. You'll talk about the exciting future with your boss/owner while he sits catatonic as the present burns down around him. I'm not saying to quit or anything silly like that. But I would definitely try and level set with him by asking:

- what are we trying to accomplish here?

- do you realize you can't do it on your own?

- are you at least starting to think about what the future looks like when you arent doing the heavy lifting?

- what can I do to help get us there?

My boss thought he wanted growth but what he really wanted was a successful lifestyle business. Nothing wrong with that. But in your case, if 2/3 of you are working hard to grow the business and the other 1/3 is missing calls and deadlines because he - the guy that should have the most motivation - can't bother to get his #### together then things aren't going to get better. They won't.

Working for startups is fun, but everybody on earth is an "idea guy ". A select few are "idea in to reality" guys. And neither of those two things has #### to do with building a business. A business is an entity made of people following processes to further a common aim where revenue is the end result. Mythology may tell you otherwise, but every successful business on earth has a vision guy (CEO) and a tactical guy (coo). I can count on one hand the people that could handle both at large scale.

Mr. Roboto if I may chime in:

  • ABC....always be closing

  • Don't worry about the horse being blind just load the wagon
  • Lead, follow, or get out of the way
  • Always let them open the kimono first
  • It's always the lead dog whose ### is bleeding
  • Half the time business comes down to "I don't like that guy"

My son sold over $600 of popcorn for cub scouts, maybe one of 8 kids in the pack to do so.

Was traveling this past week, checking my personal email at the airport Saturday evening. Saw an email come through from Friday "Just a reminder the laser tag party for the kids selling $600 is tomorrow at 1:00". Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. For some reason this wasn't in my outlook calendar. Was on my wife's calendar at home but she felt so bad last week she hadn't looked.

So I am going to take my son and some friends to laser tag this weekend. But I really feel guilty, I feel like I'm always doing things with my son because he's older, but never with my daughter alone. I think I'm going to take Friday off so we can do something. She's 4. Guster, any suggestions? Default would be kids museum at the Hall of Justice.
Not sure if 4 is too young, but there's a Daddy/Daughter dance at 20th Century from 6-8 on Sunday.Could also do Jump Zone, tubing at Perfect North, Krohn Conservatory, Loveland Castle, Blue Manatee for story time and then drinks in the cafe, Happen Inc in Northside, probably still a little young and not something you want to get her into but you could schedule lunch or whatever at the American Girl store in Columbus, Cosi in Columbus too, Newport Aquarium, Carew Tower observation deck then skating on Fountain Square (I think Friday is the last day this season) and lunch with your friend guster in OTR
Thanks

Got a job interview tonight. Not losing my current job, in fact I just got a slight promotion/lateral move.

But still, SAP has destroyed this company and I feel like it's just moving chairs on the Titanic. Plus, this new company came after me without a word that I was even looking. That always feels good.
Got the offer last night. Slight pay cut but worth it for the opportunity Super excited.

Sending off a resignation letter is one of the most uplifting things you can do..
Congrats!

Watching something about gangs in Oakland. Neat city you've got there, Truck.
I used to work for a company whose headquarters was in Oakland. The first time I went there for work I was a young 25 year old and didn't know anything. A co-worker was out there the same time for something else and called my hotel room and asked what my plans were for dinner. I said, "I figured I'd just walk around and find something" and he said "Don't do that. Don't go more than two blocks from your hotel."

Then another time I was doing a training session there and they announced to everyone "nobody leave headquarters, the bank connected to us is being robbed."

And I hear the blacks throw trash at cars too.

Oh, and we can't scan things at work. We haven't had a working scanner in 2 years. What I've been told is the bookkeeper who works in a home office (founder's house) 30 minutes from my office has a scanner. I'm supposed to fax her the doc to be scanned, she will scan it, save it and email it back.

And if we have to print anything over 50 pages (which, to close deals our documents are about 100 pages plus duplicate) I have to go to FedEx or UPS.

My window for getting a new job is pretty darn small right now. I pretty much have to find something and interview before I start showing. And even then, I don't know how comfortable I am starting a new job 5 months before going on maternity leave (even though my leave was only 4 days with my first). And then there's the whole pre-existing condition thing with insurance. So, it looks like I'm stuck listening to my crazy coworker sing, cry, and watch Hulu all day. And IM me Buzzfeed links. And start sobbing whenever she sees my child because seeing her causes her to "mourn the children that I will never have" (direct quote from her blog).

It's neat here.
oof

that sounds horrible, unless the buzzfeed links are really awesome.
Generally speaking, they are not. Typically it's "31 reasons I am going to be alone on Valentine's Day" type stuff.

I've quoted from her blog in here before. She's the one who likened her sin to a kitten, when really is a full-grown lioness wanting to eat her. It's a lot to handle on a daily basis.

I am by nature NOT a repenter. I want to be. I strive to be. But the truth is, my sin keeps coming to get me. I don't keep it out. I go to the store, purchase it, and call it a kitten, when really it is a hungry, full grown lioness with babies at home and I am the only living thing in the house. I pet my sin and believe that it loves me and that it will make me happy and while I think it is licking my hand out of affection, in reality, she is just playing with her food before she eats it. I am a fool.
This post really confuses me.

How much is this cake leeg and what are the rules?
$100, pay 3 spots.

5x5 roto. OBP instead of AVG.

28 roster spots + 2 DL. 1300 max IP.

Draft will be here. You must be willing to provide your cell number.

I'd really like some GMTANers to take the last couple spots.

$100? I don't even like baseball.

I need some killer projections. Pickles VBD App available for purchase this year?
