It's looking like I'm going to be putting down my 11-year old German Shep today. She's had back leg problems for years now, and they've steadily grown more weak and painful. We thought we'd have to put her down a month ago but she seemed to improve for a while, but now she's not been eating again.

She lives with my ex (I've got an apartment and no yard) who leaves the back door to the house open at night so she can wander in and out as needed. It rained early this morning and she went to check on her and found her lying in the rain in the back yard where she had been last night. She'd never do that if it wasn't too painful for her to get up.

Molly's been the best dog I've ever had. This ####### sucks. :(

Awwww, man. Really sorry, GB. No easy way to prepare for this and even if you've done it before, it's going to be really tough. I'll tip one back for Shep tonight.

It's looking like I'm going to be putting down my 11-year old German Shep today. She's had back leg problems for years now, and they've steadily grown more weak and painful. We thought we'd have to put her down a month ago but she seemed to improve for a while, but now she's not been eating again.

She lives with my ex (I've got an apartment and no yard) who leaves the back door to the house open at night so she can wander in and out as needed. It rained early this morning and she went to check on her and found her lying in the rain in the back yard where she had been last night. She'd never do that if it wasn't too painful for her to get up.

Molly's been the best dog I've ever had. This ####### sucks. :(

Sorry GB. My dog turns 12 in a few months and has her issues but hopefully has a couple years left in her. I don't look forward to that day at all.

Molly's a big dog who came from big parents - she's weighed 100 lbs until just recently which is enormous for a German Shepherd male, let alone a female, and she's not fat. I always knew that that would shorten her time orthopedically.

That mental image of her lying out in the rain is making me tear up. It's one of life's injustices that dogs' lives are as short as they are.

I'm intrigued by the whole thing, including the statement it makes, and wasn't sure who else would care. My only other architect friend is kind of dumb.

I almost worked with a classmate/friend of his who is essentially Ban's US office. I'm an idiot for not doing that.

Not sure what you mean by "statement"? In Ban's case, he's a guy who devotes probably as much time to low-cost alternatives (seems like he's always proposing emergency housing ideas) as to more Strachitecturey shmancy buildings. And what's great about him, is that both seem to get his equal attention to making them beautiful. So that's a pretty nice statement to give the award to him instead of the usual suspects who are doing massive budget, self-involved projects.

For those that don't know him, he's known for working with cardboard and cardboard tubes.

Rain is not an excuse in Seattle. (Although it was heavy yesterday)

As Bob Sacamano said, it was kind of a built-in excuse. We wanted a day off anyway. I will definitely be OK with hiking in rain but not torrential downpours.

We'll get in better shape soon so that I won't be embarrassed to invite you along. Are you a Mount Si type of person, or where do you like to go? I know that half of Seattle can be found on Si during the summer.

During the week, we go to a place that's a 10-minute drive. So awesome. On the weekends we're going farther--last weekend we drove to Mount Si/Little Si in the Cascades, which was about 40 minutes. This weekend we're thinking the Olympics; if we go somewhere north it will be about 1-1/2 hours or South would be 2 hours. It's amazingly fantastic to have all this within such easy driving distance.

Just got back from taking daughter to eye doctor. After a couple years of patching and she's still exhibiting exotropia, doctor is recommending surgery. I think we are going to get a second opinion from doctor at main campus of Children's. The only reason we stopped seeing her is because she went on medical leave about a year ago but is back now I guess.

My oldest had eye surgery when she was 3.5 to correct her lazy eye, we tried the patching route first but it didn't help any. One day of downtime for her and since then her vision tests have been perfect. Second daughter has a slighly lazy eye that the doc is trying to fix with glasses (guess it is a different type then the older one had). Not sure if it is working since we have gone through 3 pairs of glasses in a few months since she keeps breaking them.

Thanks. We're obviously concerned about the risks of the procedure but it seems to be pretty commonly done.

My second boy had the surgery at about 18 months. It really helped a lot, patching was not doing it for us. He seems fine now.

Re-hashing the eye-surgery discussion. Was the surgery you guys are mentioning above something to the extent of "re-aligning the muscles" to help position the eye to seem straighter? (Sorry if I'm butchering the vernacular, but just going off of a conversation with my wife). It seems that our son has v-pattern e(x)stropia and they are recommending surgery that has an 85% success ratio. this should reduce (and potentially eliminated) the need for glasses.
