GM's thread about nothing (25 Viewers)

After finding out you're about to lose your job, I can't think of a better way to deal with it than grilling up a nice t-bone steak with sauteed portobello mushrooms and a fresh salad with my homemade dressing. And for dessert, an ice cold 18-pack of Miller Lite.Deeeeeeelish!
Atta boy.Let me know if you need a reference on your resume.

since we're talking travel plans in here, anyone have any advice for Austalia?
Jump over to New Zealand and walk the Mordor Trail.
yeah, sounds great but not going to have time for that. wanted to hit NZ but decided on scuba diving in the GBR from Cairns instead. also hitting Sydney and Melbourne.
Melbourne is the food capital of Australia--very envious! I have not been, but my trip to New Zealand was among the best I've ever had, definitely the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Swimming with sharks in South Africa and diving the Great Barrier Reef are actually two of the things I desperately want to do. You people are living my life.
What else is on your list, so we can plan future trips accordingly?

Pretty sure he won't bite your neck, considering it's likely a Little Brown Bat (if it's around 2.5-3 inches long) and that's an insectivore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_brown_bat

I'd be more worried if it's a baseball bat...
See these? Our first night in Cambodia, we opened the doors to our little veranda and had the most gorgeous view of the Presidential Palace and all these beautiful...wait, those are not birds. Those are, as it turns out, thousands of giant fruit bats. The next day we walked down to this grove of trees and saw thousands upon thousands. Kind of creepy but kind of beautiful, too. A nice summary of it here.

Really seems that there's no need to start a new thread for anything now.So if I were going to start a new thread, I might ask what to do in Amsterdam for a 24-hour layover. Assume no interest in drugs (sorry, GBGM) or hookers (sorry, all). Getting in around 11 a.m. and leaving the next day around the same time. Restaurants, points of interest (looks like the Anne Frank house is not so interesting?), etc.?
Definitely do a boat tour.Definitely take a stroll through Vondelpark.Definitely take a stroll through the Red Light district.

I got pulled over by the sheriff this morning. I looked in my rear view mirror, saw a car pull up behind me and thought, oh ####. He was super nice though. He asked to see me license. I asked if he needed my registration and insurance and he said no. Apparently, my little hesitation, rolling stop didn't cut it. But he let me go without a ticket. Catch and release.

When I was 20, I ate some mushrooms and went to the Van Gogh museum. What followed was one of the best hours (maybe multiple hours?) ever. I could look at each of his portraits and tell you exactly what that person was thinking when he/she was being painted. :confused:I know mushrooms won't be part of the equation, but the Van Gogh museum would probably be pretty cool if you have time.

Krista> It would help with some hints on what type of food you prefer, but here's some places I have been to... now, it's been 3 years since I was in Amsterdam last, so some may not be exactly as I remember but anyway...

Ciel Bleu: Fine Dining. 2 Michelin Stars. I like their Scottish Salmon, the Roasted Pigeon and definitely their Cheese Trolley. They have a very good wine selection as well. I would anticipate around 200 - 250 Euros per person (if you drink wine).

English webpage: http://www.cielbleu.nl/en/Home.html

De Bolhoed: Vegetarian place my hippie friends liked a lot. I drank there, and it worked for me. Very good coffee drinks, but I don't know that much about the food, outside of my friends raving about it. Not sure if they have a webpage, but here's some vegan reviews: http://www.vegguide.org/entry/1036

Beddingtons: Fusion cuisine that has gotten rave reviews. I think it's very uneven, so check the menu first. http://www.diningcity.nl/beddington/en/index.php

Kaiko: Best sushi in Amsterdam IMO. Also very popular with Japanese business men. The place is always packed. But if you want a more traditional Japanese menu, go to Yamazoto instead (which has a Michelin star as well). http://www.yamazato.nl/en/Home.html Their Sukiyaki is among the best I've had. They used to serve traditional Japanese breakfast as well, but I'm not sure if they still do that.

For beer, go to Arendsnest, because they specialize in Dutch beer: http://www.arendsnest.nl/english.php Plenty of other places that have Belgian and German beers, but why do that while in Amsterdam.

If you want to try Jenever, go to Olofspoort, to try it out. They also sell bottles to take home: http://www.olofspoort.com/main.html

Most places have been around for centuries, so there's definitely traditional bars/pubs/restaurants to visit... Do you know what weekday you'll be there? There's always events taking place all over the city, so the weekday can factor in on what there is to do.

What type of sight seeing? I enjoy the Van Gogh Museum, but I like art... hate the Anne Frank museum... Rembrandthuis is worth a visit, the Maritime Museum is worth a visit too (http://www.scheepvaartmuseum.nl/english), the Rijksmuseum, the Vodka museum (also has a bar), Tulip museum (I don't care for it, but it is Holland). Most of these are in the museum quarter and very close. I like the Geels Coffee museum too, which is really a shop, with a museum top floor, but I'm a coffee fanatic... They are not open all days of the week though, so it's going to depend on when you are there. Museum of Bags and Purses maybe?
Whoa, this is fantastic--thank you SO much!We will be there Friday morning to Saturday morning. In terms of what we like to eat/do, just into getting a feel for a place, different culture, etc. So for food, local and authentic is good. Ciel Bleu sounds fantastic (especially the cheese trolley, and Mr. krista4 would be into the pigeon), though I'd imagine since we'll be in transit that we might not want to dress up. The place specializing in Dutch beer will be a must.

Van Gogh museum would be good for both of us, and Rembradthuis. Maritime a possibility. Will need to walk through the red-light district just because. We are staying here, location-wise.

(looks like the Anne Frank house is not so interesting?)
confirmed, unless you enjoy soul-crushing depression
This reminds me of one of the funniest things I have read recently...Peter King, the football writer for Sports Illustrated, has a weekly column where he ruminates on all things football and otherwise, in a not unlike Larry King mannerThe football/humor website Kissing Suzy Kolber does a weekly column where they take the piss out of Mr. King by providing MST3K style running commentary for his column

Coincidentally a recent Peter King column discussed his visit to the Anne Frank house:

Also had the opportunity to see the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam Friday. It was a bit of a disappointment. There was no context. No real attempt to show the place exactly as it was. There were lots of signs, no furniture, short videos and never a sense of what it was like to live there. And, frankly (pun intended), no moment of terrible sadness and grief for her like you feel when you read her diary. I kept trying to understand what it was really like but could never feel it.
Here's KSK's take on this paragraph:
Also had the opportunity to see the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam Friday. It was a bit of a disappointment.

WHERE ARE ALL THE DEAD JEWS?!

There was no context.

WHY IS THIS HOUSE BEING SHOWN TO ME IN THE YEAR 2010, A YEAR OF RELATIVE PEACE IN EUROPE? THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT CONTEXT FOR ME TO VISIT IT.

No real attempt to show the place exactly as it was.

WHY ISN’T THERE A LITTLE GIRL COWERING THE CORNER AND CLUTCHING A DOLL?

There were lots of signs, no furniture, short videos and never a sense of what it was like to live there.

WHY WON’T THEY STUFF ME IN A TRAP DOOR AND HAVE NAZIS PURSUE ME AND MY LOVED ONES?!

And, frankly (pun intended),

Oh, sweet ####### Jesus.

…no moment of terrible sadness and grief for her like you feel when you read her diary. I kept trying to understand what it was really like but could never feel it.

And there was NOWHERE in that house to get a decent cup of coffee. Anne Frank House, you got a looong way to go before you measure up to Peet’s. Better coffee. More dead Jews. GET ON IT.

It’s no Jack Bowers’ house, that’s for ####### sure.
 Jesus.

We were debating between Australia and Greece for our honeymoon next August. I really wanted to do Australia but didn't want to go during their "winter". We decided to go with Greece since it will be cheaper and won't have to plan for 200 hours in the air.If this is the thread for travel advice, has anyone been to Greece? I'm thinking we'll do a few days in Athens and then a few days of island hopping.
I don't think it will be cheaper, and don't go anywhere in Western Europe in August, as everyone will be gone.ETA: I see this was covered in detail. Also, don't go to Athens for more than a day, at any time of year.

I just realized that Sunday would have been my 12th anniversary if I was still married (and I thank the baby santa jesus that I'm not).I spent most of that day with a girl I'm seeing and her little asian monkey friend. They were 11 years old on my wedding day. :homer:The guys I play pool volleyball with most weekends were very happy I brought those two to the pool. Their girlfriends... not so much.
I like to say "My 2nd wife is in 7th grade somewhere right now."
When I told Mr. krista4 that we were going to my high-school reunion, he exclaimed, "You mean when you graduated, I was in 3rd grade?!"

For local cuisine I've heard great, really great things about Greetje, which is also close to your hotel: www.restaurantgreetje.nlI haven't been there myself, but the menu looks good

ETA: www.hap-hmm.nl Hap-Hmm is worth a visit for classic Dutch food. Not sure how familiar you are with classic Dutch, but it's basically similar to other Northern foods, very filling.

Oh, I almost forgot... There's no way you can not go to Vleminckx Sausmeesters French Fries

Just google that and read the rave reviews. The reviews don't even get close to how good this is, and not just after partaking in herbal refreshments.

I would go there just based on the name alone. :tinfoilhat: On the "definite" list.

damn it, I need to stop giving restaurant recommendations... now I'm hungry... :tinfoilhat:

Vleminckx... drool... Garlic Yoghurt sauce...

I saw they had over 30 sauces. Garlic yogurt sounds outstanding.By the way, I just noticed there is a four-page thread here on whether people wear watches?!?! I'm getting scared ever to venture out of this thread.

Somehow, I think I would have been scaled, fileted and put in the freezer. Good on ya, though!

HFS I'm flipping through the channels, IRON EAGLE is on, and I keep wondering, "Who the hell is that chick?" Had to IMDB it, but it turned out to be Jan from The Office.

Sounds like her head is screwed on straight. I'd just encourage her to stay focused on what she loves doing. BTW, I thought about you today when I drove past the this in Oakland.

My advice would be to have her be Facebook friends with me. Does the phrase "scared straight" mean anything to you?And worst case, I get to be friends with her drugged out horny friends. Win/Win, IMO.

Saw that yesterday and I still can't figure out if it's real or not.If so, it looks like the worst film ever made by anyone ever.
