GM's thread about nothing (27 Viewers)

On my record or off? A few either way. There was the time I was speeding after a dentist appointment in the rain in high school. I hit the brakes and nothing. A brand new F-150 stopped my progress as it was sitting at a redlight. There was another time on a late night run to Waffle House in college. I decided I was awesome enough to eat hasbrowns and drive, but looked up to see a restaurant sign flying over the roof of my truck as I plowed through the parking lot/flower box underneath it.I did have my own fender bender the other day (my birthday). A driver (not a woman) was in front of me, both of us turning right. He started to go, I took my foot off the brake, checked to see if it was clear for me (which it was), and turned back to see I was about to hit the Camry which was still sitting there. I hit my brakes in time to lessen the blow, but it still happened. He claimed that the lane was open, but then a driver from another lane moved over. Considering I was about to make my own right hand turn, I wanted to argue the point, but didn't hoping the dust I knocked off the back bumper wouldn't cause a claim on my insurance, which it did. I should have just pointed out the impossibility of his claim anyway as it would have been more cathartic for me.

since we're talking travel plans in here, anyone have any advice for Austalia?
Brisbane is underrated.
How long will you be there?Sydney and Brisbane and points between will provide you plenty of beach time mixed with some good restaurants and wildlife. I would suggest driving inland from Sydney across the Blue Mountains and a little bit into the outback on your way up to Brisbane and then drive back down the coast on your return.Beaches in Sydney to check out are Bondi and Avalon if you want to give surfing a go. You should of course, plan an afternoon and evening at the Harbor checking out the opera house, gardens and restaurant/bar scene. If you want to go crazy, head over to Kings Cross after midnight for some interesting bar action.
About 4 days in Sydney, 3 days in Melbourne, and a couple days in Cairns surrounding a 3 day boat trip to dive the GBR.Not going to Brisbane.

Are you comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road? It's really not difficult. I've done it in a handful of different countries. If you're willing to give it a try, a day trip West of Sydney into the Blue Mountains is definitely something to squeeze in. There's a wildlife park that way - Featherdale - that's pretty cool and you get into a little of wine country up there as well if you want to check that out. The better wine country in the Sydney area is Hunter Valley which is North of Sydney. If you're really into wine that would be the way to go but if you're happy with any old winery the wildlife park/cheaper wineries West would do you.

never done it, but I'm sure I'd get used to it quickly. not really a wine drinker but the mountains/nature park sounds interesting.

We were debating between Australia and Greece for our honeymoon next August. I really wanted to do Australia but didn't want to go during their "winter". We decided to go with Greece since it will be cheaper and won't have to plan for 200 hours in the air.

If this is the thread for travel advice, has anyone been to Greece? I'm thinking we'll do a few days in Athens and then a few days of island hopping.

My buddy is Greek. Says that you should only spend one day in Athens, see the Acropolis, and spend the rest of your time island hopping, regardless of how long you're there.

you'd think so, but that's not necessarily the case.we were looking at Italy/Greece for our honeymoon in late September but the round trip flights were always $800 and up. We wound up finding flights in and out of Sydney for about $730 round trip thanks to a sale from Delta so we went that route instead.I assume flights to Europe in August could be even more expensive.

This reminds me of one of the funniest things I have read recently...Peter King, the football writer for Sports Illustrated, has a weekly column where he ruminates on all things football and otherwise, in a not unlike Larry King mannerThe football/humor website Kissing Suzy Kolber does a weekly column where they take the piss out of Mr. King by providing MST3K style running commentary for his column

Coincidentally a recent Peter King column discussed his visit to the Anne Frank house:

Also had the opportunity to see the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam Friday. It was a bit of a disappointment. There was no context. No real attempt to show the place exactly as it was. There were lots of signs, no furniture, short videos and never a sense of what it was like to live there. And, frankly (pun intended), no moment of terrible sadness and grief for her like you feel when you read her diary. I kept trying to understand what it was really like but could never feel it.
Here's KSK's take on this paragraph:

WHERE ARE ALL THE DEAD JEWS?!

There was no context.

WHY IS THIS HOUSE BEING SHOWN TO ME IN THE YEAR 2010, A YEAR OF RELATIVE PEACE IN EUROPE? THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT CONTEXT FOR ME TO VISIT IT.

No real attempt to show the place exactly as it was.

WHY ISN’T THERE A LITTLE GIRL COWERING THE CORNER AND CLUTCHING A DOLL?

There were lots of signs, no furniture, short videos and never a sense of what it was like to live there.

WHY WON’T THEY STUFF ME IN A TRAP DOOR AND HAVE NAZIS PURSUE ME AND MY LOVED ONES?!

And, frankly (pun intended),

And there was NOWHERE in that house to get a decent cup of coffee. Anne Frank House, you got a looong way to go before you measure up to Peet’s. Better coffee. More dead Jews. GET ON IT.

It’s no Jack Bowers’ house, that’s for ####### sure.
wowPete

oof

i'll say i regret going in there. nothing like recalling the memory of a holocaust while you're on vacation to spruce things up.. especially when you have partaken in the local culture.

Could be?I'm going to Croatia Sat and even with the shady Croatian travel agent hook-up they run $1450 (online they are 1900-2K). I think just getting to Munich was something like 1250-1400 online with fees).

Cool, thanks. I'm really interested in the architecture so the Acropolis was definitely on my radar.

Interesting, never would have guessed that. We're still a year away so I haven't done a ton of research. I should probably do that. I think she's got her heart set on Greece though :hophead:

yeah, that's what I was getting at. I'm not too sure a trip to Greece would be cheaper than Australia in August...at least for the flights. And I assume Australia isn't exactly going to be cold in August. Our LA to Sydney flight is 15 hours long so that's not terrible either.

Saw a blonde dude at beach yesterday wearing a green and gold Oregon visor. He had two little blonde kids with him. I'll feel really bad if that was you because I didn't say 'hi' or anything.
Lotta blond Oregon fans with kids...pretty sure this is the Iceland of the USA.
Good point. What do you know about Sun River?
I know a thing or two about Sun River. It's about 15 miles south of Bend, which is home to Deschutes Brewery and plenty of other cool places. Sun River is an emormous resort community in the central part of the state and offers all kinds of outdoor activity....hiking, rafting, skiiing, horseback riding, golf...that's just to name a few. The resort is the 'crown jewel' of Sun River and has many large swimming pools to splash around in (I think they have a giant wave rider pool that is totally kick butt). Plus, there are bike trails ALL OVER, so if you like riding your bike, this place is ideal (and safe!). The way to go is to rent a house. There is no shortage of houses for rent in Sun River and you can get anything from an older house for $150 a night to a pimped out crib with an arcade and a bidet for quite a bit more. Google Sun River Properties or Village Properties or VRBO. If you have more than one family to vacation with, this is absolutely a no brainer. My co-worker just got back and spent $225 per night on a 4BR house with a hot tub, bikes in the garage and club memberships to both Sun River and Mavericks (which allows you to use their pools, gyms and spas). Mavericks is where the wave rider pool is, so when looking for a rental, make sure the owner offers access here.

And Sun River is a great place to base if you want to explore the region. There is just no shortage of options, from roaring rapids to Lava Cave State Park. Mt. Bachelor is close and you can ski, hike, explore one of the best slopes in Oregon. Or you can just drink a lot of beer and enjoy looking at tall trees and birds. :)
 Took a family vacation here last summer. Just awesome. Heading back up in October..

Flights to Europe in August are beyond ridiculous in general. You also lose a lot of the local "flavor" since the entire continent loves to take off at the same time. Island hopping is fine, but if you're going to any of the cultural places/cities they're pretty empty. If you are doing summer European travel go in late June/July or September. You're also right in saying from the West Coast that Australia is a fantastic choice. Athens from New York is itself close to a 10 hour flight, so its about the same flight time from LA

I spent a semester there in college. Let me uncover my notebooks/journals and I'll put some recommendations together for you.

I just realized that Sunday would have been my 12th anniversary if I was still married (and I thank the baby santa jesus that I'm not).

I spent most of that day with a girl I'm seeing and her little asian monkey friend. They were 11 years old on my wedding day. :)

The guys I play pool volleyball with most weekends were very happy I brought those two to the pool. Their girlfriends... not so much.

Did Greece about 4 years ago. Flew into Athens then did a few days each on mykonos, ios, santorini then back to athens for a few days before flying out. Only regret was not spending more time on the islands and less time in athens. If I did it again Id skip Athens altogether, or at the least just do a day in athens at the start of the trip to see the major sites - then hit the islands.edit to add - if you do hit greece we stayed at some nice places on the islands. Pricey but worth it. Especially this place if you hit santorini. built into the side of the cliffs it was pretty sweet.

Also rent a scooter/4 wheeler to explore on your own.

So after a month or so of basically trying to hide from the 8-months pregnant Mrs. Frostillicus, I think she might have turned a corner. My parents took out 2-year old for the night, so she went shopping and I went to watch some friends play in a Kittenball tournament and was there for a few hours. When I got home, she suggested that for dinner we go up to the corner bar for their meat raffle and suggested I have a couple of beers. This behavior would never have occurred even a week ago.I'm trying to decide if she's feeling better or if this is some kind of trap.
Kittenball.Meat raffle.Moar on these plz.
You mean like, what are they?Kittenball is basically softball, except the ball is about twice as big. I would link a picture here, but google images is ######ed and searching for kittenball only returns pictures of kittens, with or without balls (not those balls, sicko). It's a co-ed tournament, and the men aren't allowed to wear gloves, which is fine because beyond being twice as large as a softball, the kittenball is also very pretty soft. Not like, nerf soft or anything, but catching a line drive with your hands isn't going to hurt. It's a fun time, and there was much drinking by all. Especially "pinkies" which were sold by the trayful (one tray = 14 drinks) and are just vodka & pink lemonade. Delicious, refreshing, and alcoholic. What more could you want?Meat raffles are a big deal in Minnesota these days, gaining hugely in popularity after one of the local news shows did a big story on them and are held at nearly every bar on a weekly basis, but my family has been going to them for many years. You just show up, they sell 30 tickets per spin with a number on them, spin the wheel and if you have that number you win. Winning means you go up to the front and choose your meat. Steaks, Ribs, Porkchops, Chicken, hot dogs, bacon, whatever, all supplied by a local butcher. They sell 30 tickets per spin at a buck a piece, so they are raking in $30 per spin, usually for a local charity or school or sports team, and if you win the meat is probably worth about $20-$25 each package, so everybody wins. Plus you get to sit and drink.Any other questions?
GB Kittenball and GBB Meat Raffles.I'm known throughout most of Minnesota as the Meat Whisperer. I never fail to dominate a meat raffle.Demori's has their meat raffles at 2pm on Saturdays. Last time I went I got $50 in gift cards and a package of NY Strip steaks. :lmao:

Why do dudes at the urinal flush while still going?

"Mmm, love that cool, refreshing piss-water spraying about my hands and groin!"

Pictures don't do her justice. I had seen pictures (like this one) but was unprepared for the consolidated cuteness of monkey in a low cut dress, much less a little bikini. GB her doctor. The picture also doesn't properly convey the approximately one foot height difference between these two. The tall one is 5'11" but seems to always kinda hunch over for pictures with her friends. And asian monkey must be wearing heels.

Wow. Sunday was my 12 year anniversary. Too bad neither of us even acknowledged it, since we're in the process of divorce. Some day, I will be like Stu! <_<
