I figured most Americans would be familiar with acorns, considering their importance to the Native American tribes... they don't teach you this stuff in school?
I grew up on a pecan orchard. Who needs acorns?
Isn't it technically a "pecan grove"? I thought "orchard" was for fruit. Maybe I am wrong.
:bs: I think the grove is planted in the orchard. The orchard is the land, the grove are the trees.

This recipe for “Squirrel in Cream Sauce” is from:“Linda Stephenson’s Wild Game Dutch Oven Cooking”:2 squirrels, cleaned and cut into serving pieces1 medium onion, chopped1/2 tsp dried thyme1 (4 oz) can mushrooms, sliced and drained1 c beef broth1 c sour cream2 Tbs lemon juice3 Tbs flourIn a large bowl, soak squirrel in salted water overnight. Remove pieces and rinse. Combine squirrel, onion, thyme, mushrooms and broth in Dutch oven. Cook for two hours.Remove meat to a platter and keep warm. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, lemon juice and flour, stir well. Add sour cream mixture into Dutch oven and stir until thickened. Spoon sauce over meat.(Linda recommends using a 12-inch Dutch oven, with a temperature of about 325 degrees.)
Sholdn't you use squirrel broth for squirrel?

I have never heard of pecan grove, I have heard of Walnut Grove

I wish it would snow here. It's supposed to get to 71 today.
Snow sucks. One of the reasons why I live where I do is that at the very least I don't have to deal with snow. No shovels, blowers, remote car starters, engine block warmers, etc. I don't think I even own a pair of gloves other than work gloves. I can't think of the last time I wore any kind of boot.
Yes, snow sucks. But I can move it.It's a little more difficult to move the building that just fell on top of me.
Blizzards kill way more people than earthquakes do.
Try selling that snakewater in Port Au Prince.
Yeah but we're not talking about the 3rd World. Everything kills you there.

About 150 people have died in earthquakes in CA in the last 30 years: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/sta...deaths_sort.phpGranted, earthquakes are obviously a lot more dangerous in less-developed parts of the world.

The difference between Americans and Canadians #64 - My son brags about his "hockey scar". She'll have a great story for years to come. Glad she was alright.

I hate automatic flushing toilets. I stand when I wipe and they always flush when I stand up. SO I get 2 or 3 flushes, which is what I usually need so it works out.

btw, here's a list of some earthquakes worldwide

50,000 or more deaths: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/wor...destructive.php

1,000 or more deaths: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/wor...orld_deaths.php

here's some blizzard info from the US: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0886098.html

sounds about as scary as Swine Flu.
Like I said, earthquakes are brutal in other parts of the region. But if we're comparing CA Earthquake deaths to Northeast/Midwest blizzard deaths, I think fewer people die per capita in CA.

Worldwide vs. the US? Come on, guy. Using that logic we should all be boiling our drinking water and looking for landmines when we walk out to the mailbox.

I couldn't find a link of global blizzard deaths. When I tried to google it, I got a bunch of WoW crap.

after a blizzard hits, school gets cancelled and kids go out and play in the snow.

after a big earthquake hits, assuming you survive, you still might wind up homeless.

pretty easy call.

Of the top 44 listed, snowstorms don't even make the cut. A couple of hundred deaths by snow vs many thousand by earthquake. I'll keep my snow and you can keep your earthquakes.

Actually, we don't even have any snow yet.
Irrelevant. We're comparing the modern-day death potential of earthquakes in CA vs. the modern-day death potential of blizzards in the Northeast. We need jeep to chime in here about hurrahcanes.

You're lucky BGP doesn't read this thread.

After it gets real hot outside, you can go outside, swim in the ocean/pool, check out chicks in bikinis, go fishing, etc.Warm weather will always trump cold weather.(we've had this discussion countless times before)

How often do you think we have serious earthquakes in California?
most of California is awesome. The best weather in the world doesn't make Bakersfield a better place to live than Chicago though.I can't remember the last blizzard I've been around. They don't happen very often either.

Regular hurricanes or ones which hit 3rd world neighborhoods? Snow sucks, but I do like snow skiing and being on a mountain with snow. It's mildly amusing in small doses around the house, but not if it shuts everything down for days. It takes a whopping 2-3" to do this where I live though. Cold weather, on the other hand, is good for nothing.

Down here, when we get the annual 6 weeks of winter, people are always stocking up on firewood and using space heaters. Every cold snap, you count on somebody ending up homeless or dead because of a space heater.

Right, but just like turkey frying, Darwinian principles are allowed to act.

Boy, you could NOT be more wrong here. Here's 5 nice sized cities that are NOT awesome at all:1. Oakland

2. Modesto

3. Stockton

4. Fresno

5. Any town around the Salton Sea

Anywhere within 10 miles of the Pacific Ocean in California (aside from some parts of LA) >>> the entire rest of the nation.

I'll take your word for it.I'm a fan of San Diego and San Francisco and most of the coast. I can't speak for the less desirable areas, although I'm sure the great weather cures all ills based on what my Cali friends are saying in here.

 Come on. I probably know the guy.
I stayed in Bakersfield for two nights to attend the riveting and exciting Tulare Ag Show back in 1997. The Bakersfield airport is smaller than my town house...or was back then. I also seem to recall a lot of graffiti around the Bakersfield area. I'm sure there are some nicer pockets I didn't get to see, but I don't remember leaving and saying "Man, now this is a place I could come back to live". But if I came into a bunch of money, I'd move to either San Diego or San Francisco in a hearbeat.

Actually the weather in Central Calif is pretty crappy during the summer. Hot as hell and bad air quality. The only plus is that from October to April it is pretty damn nice.

also, warm weather = higher crime rate.fact.
Although Detroit would like to argue with you here.
not much crime there in the winter I'm guessing or at least not nearly as much as during the summer when everyone is outside.
I think they just move the crime inside in winter months.Downtown Detroit is a scary scary place in parts. But to your point, when I lived in Jackson, MS, crime absolutely SPIKED in July/August. Lotta angry young men with short fuses down there.

Yeah our airport sucks...BUT this isn't exactly a destination city. No need for a big airport. There are plenty of nice pockets. There are some crapholes as well. You could probably say the same thing about any town. The only time I've been in Dallas is was stuffy, crowded and expensive. That's because I never left the airport.

That's a seasonal argument, not climate based.
sure, there are many factors.but higher temps lead to more aggression. lots of studies show this.even one I remember showed a significant correlation between hit batters and temperatures in MLB games over many years.

I had to audit tractor dealers in the Salton Sea area. In the summer. I had to climb up into a tractor to inspet it and burned the hell out of my hand grabbing the metal handle. I'm from Texas. I know heat. I've never encountered ANYTHING like that before. It was miserable. I don't see people survive there.
