Downtown Detroit is a scary scary place in parts.

it literally looks like a nuclear bomb was dropped not too long ago. it's like Mad Max in parts.the suburbs are great though and most people don't go downtown.

I have a friend that lives in Bakersfield. He's a teacher I went to his wedding in Bakersfield. Bakersfield is a Flying J ####hole.

Come on. I probably know the guy.

I stayed in Bakersfield for two nights to attend the riveting and exciting Tulare Ag Show back in 1997. The Bakersfield airport is smaller than my town house...or was back then. I also seem to recall a lot of graffiti around the Bakersfield area. I'm sure there are some nicer pockets I didn't get to see, but I don't remember leaving and saying "Man, now this is a place I could come back to live". But if I came into a bunch of money, I'd move to either San Diego or San Francisco in a hearbeat.

Yeah our airport sucks...BUT this isn't exactly a destination city. No need for a big airport. There are plenty of nice pockets. There are some crapholes as well. You could probably say the same thing about any town. The only time I've been in Dallas is was stuffy, crowded and expensive. That's because I never left the airport.

Dallas women wear make-up to the gym. What you drive is more important than who you are to some. No thanks. I couldn't wait to leave Dallas.

How often do you think we have serious earthquakes in California?

most of California is awesome. The best weather in the world doesn't make Bakersfield a better place to live than Chicago though.I can't remember the last blizzard I've been around. They don't happen very often either.

Boy, you could NOT be more wrong here. Here's 5 nice sized cities that are NOT awesome at all:1. Oakland

2. Modesto

3. Stockton

4. Fresno

5. Any town around the Salton Sea

I think about 20 people live around the Salton Sea, so I don't think that would qualify as "nice sized."But you could put Redding in there instead. And I'd replace Oakland with Richmond. Richmond is like concentrated bad Oakland, without any of the pesky affluent areas or culture.

I had to audit tractor dealers in the Salton Sea area. In the summer. I had to climb up into a tractor to inspet it and burned the hell out of my hand grabbing the metal handle. I'm from Texas. I know heat. I've never encountered ANYTHING like that before. It was miserable. I don't see people survive there.

I went to the Salton Sea once as a kid. There were hundreds of thousands of dead fish floating in the water and washed up on shore. It was like a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie. Actually gave me nightmares.

Completely agree here. Where my wife's family is located is fantastic. Lakes everywhere. Gorgeous big trees and neat little towns (Birmingham, Lake Orion, Rochester) throughout.But yeah, downtown is a scary place. GM building is cool and there are some cool restaurants and bars...but it's not a place you'd want to change a flat.

Completely agree here. Where my wife's family is located is fantastic. Lakes everywhere. Gorgeous big trees and neat little towns (Birmingham, Lake Orion, Rochester) throughout.But yeah, downtown is a scary place. GM building is cool and there are some cool restaurants and bars...but it's not a place you'd want to change a flat.

If you walk/drive around the City of Detroit with Dr. D and I, we'll take the scary part out of it for you.

I'll take your word for it.I'm a fan of San Diego and San Francisco and most of the coast. I can't speak for the less desirable areas, although I'm sure the great weather cures all ills based on what my Cali friends are saying in here.

Actually the weather in Central Calif is pretty crappy during the summer. Hot as hell and bad air quality. The only plus is that from October to April it is pretty damn nice.

I have a friend who wants to break up with his live in GF. He would be the one moving out in this scenario. He wants to know when is a good time to tell the GF being that it's the holiday season and all. Should he do it now before Christmast? Between Christmas and NYE? Right after New Years?Also, assume that they aren't giving each other Christmas gifts so don't let that factor into your suggestion. I think he also said that her birthday is in February sometime too so I assume he'll definitely want to get out before then.

After Christmas but before New Year's. Christmas is a family homey holiday, so talking to everyone about why your SO isn't around would suck. New Year's is a drinkin, datin, night on the town holiday. She can go out with her single friends and have a good time. And probably find someone new to sleep with.
