I don't really think the dealer made up for the 2000 in the new car sale. New car price was negotiated prior to the trade in on my vehicle, two completely separate negotiations. I am willing to bet the dealer made a profit on my trade in, that's all fine. I was satisfied with my trade in value. I didn't have to place an ad, get phone calls day and night, have to deal with the next poor shmuck that realized that the drivers side power window doesn't work most of the time, and that there was a knock in the engine, etc...Also, where did I say that I believed he would lose 15% on the sale of my trade in? I said I'm sure if he put a little work into it, he could probably have received 9,500 for it. People pay more for used cars at dealers. A dealer can offer a 12 month limited warranty. Guru_007 cannot, as I am not a mechanic, nor do I have 15 on my payroll. I don't believe dealerships lose money on trade in's, I believe there is a pretty good profit margin in them actually, quite a bit more than new cars. Plus, they don't have to promise the manufacture that they will move an x-amount of model per year. They may look at how long they sit on the lot, but that is the only cost really.I used to be fairly adamant about not trading in cars, preferring private sale. that was until I really did the math and factored in the cost to me of selling a car, having to meet someone to test drive it, waiting for someone to make an offer. Also, it's pretty easy to show that getting 8500 for a trade in is better than 10000 in private sale.Everyone likes a bargain, myself included. But what I like more than a bargain (sometimes) is time and headaches saved. You make some vaild points- esp. for extremely popular cars, but my other comments are in CAPS above.IF THE DEALER IS GIVING YOU 8000 FOR YOUR CAR THAT WHOLESALES FOR 6000, HE MADE UP THAT MISSING 2000 IN WHAT HE CHARGED YOU FOR THE NEW CAR. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THE DEALER WILL NOT "LOSE" 15% ON A NEW CAR TRANSACTION, BUT DO SO IN THE USED PART?

If it helps, I'll share why I don't much like my brother: he's a dickmitten.
Slap it way high!!
