GM's thread about nothing (27 Viewers)

Again, thanks for all the input and advice on the PhD decision.

I'm going to apply. However, it'll be a late application so I'm not holding my breath. While I'd be auto-accepted on a regular application, I'm competing for a single open spot (the spot with funding), so despite all the correspondence with my mentor, I'm not viewing this as a fait accompli.

Send that positive karma this way, and thanks again.
Sending positive vibes, jerkass.

Sorry I missed all the discussion of this (I tend to stay out of the GMTAN while at work). You made the right decision. :)

House to myself. Did all my laundry, made some nachos and watched Fast Five and Green Lantern.

Do I know how to party or what?
We rented this from Redbox the other night. Husband claims that it's only just short of Castaway in terms of worst movie ever.
Cast Away was great. Romo can suck it.
Yea, I thought the same thing (minus the Romo sucking it). CastAway is your yardstick for bad movies? Really?
 He just really hated that movie.

I think I've become addicted to Rocket City Rednecks. The Hillbilly fireworks episode was a riot. And Daddy gets all the best lines.

I have absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday in forever. Wife has the kids. No baseball. Going to a hockey game, but not until tonight. I feel like I should do something productive, but not going to work. This is a strange feeling.
you're gonna need a crock pot.

How can you expect me to do that when I know you're one of them there f'n Canadians?

Got a call from my mom just after I posted that with a list of errands she needed ran. Teach me to post that. Now I'm at Home Depot getting ready to get a grilled hot dog and wondering to myself:"Can a girl be Home Depot hot?"I think a 5 in HD suddenly becomes a 6.5 just due to surroundings.

Good point. Send beer instead.

Is this SUsquehanna-2222?

2222? Whadda you, playin trains?

Also, when I was a kid you didn't have to say the first 2 digit at all. Everyone just knew to dial 77 or 78 first depending on the town. I didn't really know that numbers had 7 digits until I was like 12.
Back when I was in HS there was still one part of town that had just one prefix...366. If you were calling from a 366 number to another 366 number all you had to do was dial the 6 and then the last 4 numbers. Like 6-1212.
What are you guys, like 100?
:goodposting: I thought I was about your age, but maybe not.
Probably more a function of being from a rural area. Also, SMB.

Did you have to turn the crank on the phone to get to the operator?

For those concerned, I texted bob about his recent hiatus. He replied that things have been weird. I said hang in there and hope to see you in gmtan soon. He said he appreciated it. Not getting the warm and fuzzies but at least we know he's not dead. :(

Please operate my crank. TIA.

I'm going to watch a minor league hockey game tonight. I'm hoping for a fight.
You will not be disappointed. I've seen quite a few Winterhawk games and I can't tell you any of the results, but I can recall some awesome brawls. Remember, these kids are 17, 18, 19 years old. They like to play hockey when they aren't fighting. They also don't make very sound decisions, so things like leaving the bench, using a stick, employing the Iron Claw...those things are all in play here.
Had a great time. Was really a lot of fun. Will definitely go again, and would love for Seattle to get an NHL team. Super interesting, non-stop action. And I didn't even get to see a fight.
Hockey is the opposite of football: it looks 100X better live than on TV. Football is 100X better on TV than live. I never follow hockey, but wouldn't hesitate to attend an NHL game if invited. It's always a good time.
Entertainment value with hockey increases exponentially whereas with football I'd almost rather watch at home with HD. Those outdoor winter classics must be awesome.

 Hockey is probably the best sport to watch live. I went to the Blackhawks/Redwings game at Wrigley. Being a Cubs and Hawks fan, was one of the coolest sporting events I've ever been too.

Sam's Club has the best samples on Saturday. Protein Meal bars, green bean casarole, and wine!!
Going to head up there now with an empty party tray. Going to see how much I can fill up for free. Got the lsu game to watch later.

so while walking around the liquor store today I decided to give some scotch a try. I bought Johnnie Walker Black. Is this a good beginner scotch?

Wife went to UW vs Ohio State at Lambeau about 5 years ago. She said the same thing.

yeah put you need to go to Sam's club on a Saturday.Shark move is to get the business membership (you don't actually need a business), then you can get in starting at 7am M-Sat. Absolutely no lines at all and only costs slightly more/year.

he was going for his daily walk when he saw giraffes setting a bus on fire with the blood of orangutan donors. he stopped to assist and met Kareem who was there drawing plans for a new playground to be built by Colombian children with epilepsy.then he found a quarter on the ground and let it ride on St Louis Blob in the 6th at Santa Anita. turns out the 300:1 odds were multiplied because he dialed in from a wifi connection.he's using the new found riches to pay for his friends surgery to correct ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency.

Ditto.Hope he's well and especially hope Cal is OK.

so while walking around the liquor store today I decided to give some scotch a try. I bought Johnnie Walker Black. Is this a good beginner scotch?
I like it, but would not consider it a beginner's. Its very peaty for popularly price blend. Nothing like Chivas, JW Red, Cutty, etc. Good thing is, if you like it - you really like scotch. I used to drink it on the rocks with a splash of seltzer, way back in the day.

I'll drink just about anything and I love Irish whiskey but can't stand Scotch. Weird I know. I think it's the aroma that does it.

I only bought a 200ml bottle so I'll power through it even if it's rough. What would you consider a good beginner scotch for me to look for next time?
