GM's thread about nothing (63 Viewers)

4 fingers of Kalua and 2 fingers of half&half = tasty
Just cracked a 2010 Fish Eye Pinot Grigio...thoughts?
unfamiliar. I seldom drink PG. not enough flavor for my worn out tastebuds
I need the beginner's guide to starting a wine collection when you get a chance, TIA.
What do you like? THis is a good time to buy. Probably cheapest prices of the year.Do you have a cellar? How long are you willing to "hold" quality bottle? How much do you want to invest?
Mostly cabs right now, but I'm a major noob. I don't have a cellar, I could buy something. I'd prefer to get a few "cheap-ish" guys that I can drink now and maybe a few to hold. I bought a random selection of six from the wine thread the other day just based on peep's suggestions...here's what I got:Hogue Genesis Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 this is pretty popular. I was never a fan. Its not bad, but there are too many more I like betterSt Francis Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - I have a bottle of this I am anxious to try. I think WE gave it a 94- an incredible score- but sometime the reviewers are paid off or just wrong. I will try it this weekend. Its going now for about 18-20 and if its close to a 94, that's a screaming bargain.Marques de Caceres 'Rioja' Reserva 2004 - Good, solid wine. I have a bottle or two, but never seem to find myself opening one.Cimicky Trumps Grenache/Shiraz 2007 - have not tried this but I am a fan of that blend and Barossa wines in generalLouis Martini 'Sonoma' Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 - rock solid cab. THeir Napa is better still, but costs more like $20/bottle. Both are great valuesQuail's Gate Pinot Noir 2008 - unfamiliar with this one. I'm leary of most Canadian wines, except maybe Rieslings, but who knows. At $25, it might be good . I'd try it but I wouldnt buy it without tasting it or reading a trusted review. If any/all of these are terrible, I can take it. Give me the straight cosdirt. TIA

Did you ever get an answer to your Cannery Row question?
No. What kind of literary snob doesn't respond to a random text about a fancy novel at 1:15 on a Tuesday morning?
I was drunk and about to pass out. Also, haven't read it. :bag:
Yea, sorry. I haven't read it either. But that isn't why I didn't respond earlier. You asked right around the time you were making fun of my son's name, and I either wasn't in the mood to respond, or thought it an odd added insult in some way I couldn't discern. Sorry about that.
No, just a simple legit question. Nice literary snobs we got 'round here.
krista: "What's your opinion of Cannery Row?"Mr. krista: [long pause} "I don't know."He then left for the bathroom.
I'm smarter than you guys.
Two hours later:Mr. krista: Why did you ask me about Cannery Row?krista: blahblahblahinternetguyblahMr. krista: It's good. But still Steinbeck. Rich people bad, poor people good.

Thanks for the reviews, cos. Any bargains or buy low and hold candidates you like now that you've seen me buy some random #### from the wine thread?

I posted some nice values at Costco from my last trip there. Search this thread for cabernet and it should come up.

Tres Picos, is you can find it is an outstanding Garnacha (Grenache from Spain). Worth more than the $17-18 retail and sometime I find it in the 12-14 range. Can hold for at least three years. Big explosive wine, more like a high end napa cab than a spanish red. very fruit forward, but great structure.

Ferrari Carrano Fume Blanc - nice Cal Sauvignon Blanc with a little oak ageing (very unusual fro a SB). Used to sell for 20 and fetched 40+ in restaurants. I picked up 6 bottles today for $10 each. A very nice wine for that price. The oak means you cna hold it a few years, which you cannot do with most SBa without losing some of their edge

Cuvasion or La Crema Chardonnay - Solid $20 chards I've seen around 12-14 lately. Could hold 2-4 years, maybe longer. Both use malolactic fermentation for a nice creamy texture, but still have the cripness I wile in my whites.Neither has much if any oak, which I am not a fan of in Chards.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc - A super, crisp wine bursting with citrus flavors- esp. grapefruit. $12-16. Can hold a year or two.

I'll post more when I visit my cellar or go shopping.

Thanks, I did print your costco notes too. I am an executive member after all. I'll be refined in no time.

Disagree. I'm no Steinbeck genius but I've read three of his NOVELS: Cannery Row, Crepes of Wrath, and Of Mice and Men and I think Cannery Row actually goes out of it's way to paint the rich guy as a good guy. I'd like you to punch OH in the face.

Mrs. TF, BIL and I just busted out the Atari thing that has like 50 games on it. She's been playing Pitfall for 10 straight minutes and keeps dying within 30 seconds each time. Think I should PM JoeT?

Is this a plug-and-play thing? Any of you guys ever master Pitfall? At the end you're supposed to take a picture of the screen and send it in to get some patch. I was so pumped when I finally did it. Then when I got the pictures back from being developed, all I had was a picture of what looked like a gray screen with a big flash in it.

I do remember taking pictures of the screens when I used to finish games and send them into Nintendo Power :bag:

So I've had this intense headache that radiated from the top of my head down to my jaw for like three days and I was terrified I either had head cancer or would have to go to the dentist. Suddenly tonight I realize I have a tooth where I never had a tooth before. I'm 35 years old and just had a wisdom tooth pop through. That's gotta be kinda weird, yeah?

I was going for irony, but I love me a good pumpkin bread.

made pumpkin pancakes last week and they were phenomenal.

And you avatar reminds me- anyone heard the new David Lynch CD? Some weird music going on in there.

Is it ironic if I'm shuked by shuke? I don't understand what's stuck in your craw here.

3.5 cups flour

3 cups sugar

3 tsp salt

1.5 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinammon

1 tsp nutmeg

1 cup oil

2/3 cup water

1 large can pumpkin (29 oz)

1 tsp vanilla

Sift dry ingredients then mix in rest with mixer until smooth. Pour into three loaf pans greased with butter flavored Crisco.

Bake 350 degrees for 80 minutes.

Remove from oven let sit in pans for 15 minutes.

Remove from pans and let cool on rack.

By the way, this is more like a cake than a bread. It was my grandma's recipe and I've been devouring it for years.

Pretty much the pancake recipe I have, but double the cinnamon and nutmeg, add some ginger and another half cup of water or milk.Cook in butter until crispy, flip and serve with bacon.
