Worst song to make love to?
Started watching the show on Friday. I've already made it through the first two sedonsI watched about 5 minutes of Mad Men the other day. Seemed pretty dumb.

I think I made it about 15 minutes into one episode, had no idea why anybody would voluntarily spend time watching the show, and haven't seen it at all since. I admit I have been tempted to try watching it again, as people seem to love it.Agreed. I watched the first thirty minutes and never wanted to see another second.I watched about 5 minutes of Mad Men the other day. Seemed pretty dumb.

Had to donate a buckUgh. Well we're all glad you don't go into work early as well. Not to continue to be a downer, but I'm a little shaken up. Just glad I don't come to the office very early. What I hear now from someone who witnessed it is that the guy showed up and was waving the gun around in the parking lot while yelling at the woman. Many people had to run to take cover and several called 911. One of my friends was on the phone with 911 when the man shot the woman and, after she was apparently dead, he laid on top of her and shot himself. Lots of people witnessed it and also were in the potential line of fire. Just glad it wasn't worse, but an awful lot of traumatized people here.We are located in East Memphis, which is a tree-lined, very suburban-feeling and normally quiet part of Memphis.ETA: She's finally been identified and I didn't know her.

Yep, that'll do it.You know how I know I'm gay? I recently subscribed to TheEllenShow YouTube channel.
Somedays people jump on the bridge, somedays the bridge jumps into the water.I drive along the Mississippi River on the way to work every day, mostly north-southish. There are a couple of high bridges that go east-west over the river. One day I was headed to work southbound and northbound traffic was backed up for miles. I saw some dude just laying there on the northbound side blocking traffic. Apparently he jumped off the high bridge and landed on the road. The body looked suprisingly normal for falling a couple of hundred feet onto a road I thought. I was going by at about 40mph though, not like I got a great look at it.The moral of the story is I wish I would have known about the free bar trip for the day for these events.

I totally made it up to get a response out of Tanner. I didn't expect these other guys to pile on.I don't believe anyone smart could dislike Mad Men.

Sucks. How good a friend? I think any question along the lines of how long you knew has to be addressed with "Look, you know I can't get into the details and I would hope as a friend you won't make this situation any more difficult than it needs to be".Wasn't going to bring this up during baseball chat, but since I'm already full of sunshine and puppies and unicorns...Had a meeting with my boss Monday. Remember Zack/Zach/Zacque, my best friend at work who was going to be fired and I'd take over his group? It's happening on Thursday. Now I have to spend time with my boss and HR figuring out my part in talking to him and getting him on board with his extremely generous severance package, while still (for me) remaining his friend and (for the company) being a good soldier to try to make him not make waves, as well as getting his team to buy into the change. So now I've been asked to contact him immediately after this happens to try to facilitate the solution, like within an hour of his being given the news. Effin yay. Some people here had great advice when I was first dealing with this. If you have any advice at all--particularly on the questions of "when did you know" or "can you help me save my job"--they are welcomed.
That's really a good response--thank you. I'd say he's my best friend at work.ETA: actually that doesn't answer your question. Best friend at work but not super-close. He moved about six months before I knew about it , for instance.Sucks. How good a friend? Thanks. Problem is that I will also be "the man " representing the company here. So acting like I've tried to save him undercuts the company and my boss. And I should have mentioned, I can't lie. :(I'm thinking of deflecting questions by answering a different question, while not lying. For instance, the answer to when did you know is, "xxx [boss] and I discussed on Monday" (true). On the save my job question, I can't come up wih anything better than explaining why it's best for him, me, and the company. But I'm totally open to ideas,"When did you know?""Months ago.""Can you help me save my job?""What do you think I've been doing all those months?"Might not be completely true, but that doesn't mean it won't work.
ummm... not a fan of Baseball chat, but I might stick around some anyway, depending on work schedule. There are TONS of interesting things to do in and around Copenhagen, and early June should be a good time to visit. I lived there for a while, and grew up about 45 mins away, on the other side of the bridge/ferry, so I've spent a lot of time there.I'm thinking of it. Would just be a few days, June 7-10. But while I'd love to get your thoughts on it, even more so I just missed seeing you around. Hope maybe you'll stay. Would more baseball chat entice you? :XTecumseh, very sorry to hear about Mark's passing.
Is charvik still posting around here at all? Seems like ages since he's been around.I had a forced vacation from the board for giving advice. Apparently it's frowned upon to be direct.
I haven't been back since, and probably wouldn't have returned if it weren't for somebody emailing me that you asked where I've been. Is the Copenhagen trip coming up?
Since this is the bad news thread, I'll mention that there was a murder-suicide at my office this morning. Pretty awful and gruesome.
not quite the right time talking vacations.

Just off the top of my head, and I can follow up with more specifics when it's getting closer:
Strøget is a must, if for nothing else, just for shopping and people watching. Plenty of bars and Smørrebrød/lunch restaurants around (The Royal Cafe is good, or Husmanns Vinstue for traditional food). I'll post some favorites later. I'd do Tivoli Garden as well, which is kind of like an old-fashioned amusement park, but very well planned, laid back and worth a visit.
I'd go to Royal Copenhagen and Arne Jacobsen as well. For shopping Illum might interest, since it also gives some opportunity for people watching.
For art, Glyptoteket is nice, but up the coast about 45 minutes or so away is Louisiana, which generally has excellent quality in their exhibits. I'd have to check their exhibit program though, as they roll their exhibits frequently.
Nyhavn has a great deal of restaurants and bars, ranging from classic to modern. Excellent spot on the far east side of Strøget.
Of course, there's also the Carlsberg tour I am fond of, or the casino, pubs, beer halls, etc...
I'm sure I'll think of more when I haven't pulled a 16 hour day (and still going)...

not such a bad idea.sucky day... sorry GBK4...Well, I've done this too many times, almost to the point that it doesn't bother me anymore, which actually would've bothered me if I wasn't such a heartless drunken *******. The added complexity here is the "friendly" nature with the person being let go. Unfortunately, that relationship may not be salvageable, at least not short-term.What I've found is keeping things short and sweet is the way to go. Also to keep it focus on the business reasons, and not get involved in any personal side bars.I don't remember the exact details about Zach, but if I'm not too far off it was all performance related(?).I would make sure to get the feedback from your boss/HR, if possible, to get a heads up on his reaction. After that I would be very direct with him, helping him understand that the severance package is very nice, the decision is made and nothing can change it now, and while it sucks for him right at this moment it's always better to part ways amicably. I'm not sure how your firm handles severance packages, but I would assume there are caveats for behavior, and stipulations to be upheld in order for it to trigger? I wouldn't state that, unless things get ugly, but if HR has done their jobs, he should already be aware. He should have a vested interest in making things transition smoothly as well.I would make sure not to be apologetic, as you have done nothing wrong. If he had been a top performer, he would not have been let go. If anything I'd lead off with it being "an unfortunate situation", but then immediately focus on moving forward. His team will be going through a transition as well, and unless he was a horrible boss, he should want to treat them well, another motivating factor for him. "How can we help the team transition, and not cause concerns?" (BTW, you should already have a plan for that, which should/could be modified based on his input) That deflects the discussion onto the team, not his situation...Do you have reason to believe he would ask if you tried to save his job?I hope the rambling made at least a little sense, afterWasn't going to bring this up during baseball chat, but since I'm already full of sunshine and puppies and unicorns...Had a meeting with my boss Monday. while posting and writing proposals...I wouldn't mind breaking up baseball chat with, well anything really... Noma is indeed awesome, there's a reason it's considered one of the best in the world. For those wondering: http://www.noma.dk/main.php?lang=enCurrent menu:I'll send you a PM so as not to bore anyone ***cough***baseball chat*** but have also been researching areas in which to stay and such, as well as restaurants of course. That menu should run around $440 or so, if going with their wine pairings (which is a no-brainer)ETA: I'd probably make reservations now, just to make sure, or you'd be looking at a lunch reservation. Nothing wrong with lunch, I just prefer the slower pace over dinner.Celeriac and unripe sloe berry
White currant and douglas-fir
Dried scallops and beech nuts
Biodynamic grains and watercress
Razor clam and parsley
Dill and horseradish
Cauliflower and pine
Onion and thyme
Gooseberry juice
Pike perch and cabbages
Verbena and dill
Pickled vegetables and bone marrow
Wild duck and beets
Beech and malt
Pear tree!
Brown cheese and sloe berries
This actually is all very sensible and helpful. You're right about keeping answers short, as well as focusing on business entirely. It's certainly all performance-related, which might lead to your other question of why "saving him" might have come up. I don't have a huge amount of business interaction with Zack, but I know he works very hard. He might think that, if I were a "real" friend, and knowing I have a lot of influence with our boss, I might try to keep him in the junior position we are now creating In lieu of his job. I think he could volunteer to take that position (reporting to me, one level down from where he was), especially because our boss is known as an ####### and many people like a buffer from him. I can't let him vie for that job as we need someone stronger in the position. You're totally on target in terms of emphasizing the severance and encouraging that. It's extremely generous and in fact I pitched our boss to let me go instead. Again as you anticipated, there would be ramifications to not taking it and making a fuss instead.Every sentence I type on this stupid iPad takes at least 4x as long as normal.Love this. Thanks for this and everything else. Copenhagen chat activated!wrt hotels...
Hotel D'Angleterre is good, but almost Paris pricy, probably around $300/night, but you might enjoy Hotel Skt Petri, which is very modern, and also offers special programs for women traveling alone. Might be worth exploring for around $200-ish/night. (Hotel Vesterbro has the same <$150). Not super knowledgeable about hotel choices since I've always had apartments available to me.

oof, yeah, that one is tricky... Why would he be aware of the new position though? If he does go that route, that might be where it'll be impossible to salvage the "work-friendship". You can't afford to have a B-player in that type of role, especially one challenged to perform. It's certainly all performance-related, which might lead to your other question of why "saving him" might have come up. ETA: I guess I should either stop drinking, stop writing this proposal or just shut down altogether, because I just called the CTO for a very large Oilfield Service Provider a dickmitten in my executive overview.
