GM's thread about nothing (90 Viewers)

I have a meeting this afternoon with a financial adviser... well, really, an agent from a life insurance company.Anyone have any experience here? I've been putting money into a 401(k) through my company, but they don't match or anything, so there's no incentive for me to keep funding that account over something else.
oh yeah, he's calling it "cash surrender value life insurance" and it's a form of "permanent life insurance"i'm just naturally distrustful of sales guys like this that are pretty pushy, but a couple other people at work have used this guy/their service and have been happy with him.i just know next to nothing about this stuff
Stay away from "Whole Life Policies". Buy term and invest the rest.

So a girl I knew in high school just posted a Facebook status asking if you can make chicken in a crockpot.

My proposed response: "Absolutely, in fact, your wall has inspired me to make a big batch of crockpot chicken right now."

Day 2 of liver destruction about to begin. Getting ready to shower and man-scape then heading BBQ party on a lake. The girl putting on the party has specifically invited a few "single female friends" for the purpose of introducing them to me. She told me there will be girls there that fall into the following categories: (A) one-night stand (B) friend with benefits © possible long term relationship
What she didn't tell you is that A, B, and C are all the same girl.
:goodposting:Depends on your approach, GB.As a side note, I've already locked up Gadzooks as my go-to guy if my marriage doesn't work out, so all of you who have man-crushes on him: BTFU
I think he knows how to disable FindMyiPhone, so there's a chance.

The fees the agents get are outrageous for one. You really can't control your money and the more the underlying investments make, the more the agents get. Invest that yourself and keep the money.

Man, I don't know what is going on with me. I've been pretty good the past couple years about watching what I eat better. But the past couple weeks I have had an almost insatiable appetite and craving sugar. I bought a box of Little Debbies yesterday to keep in my desk drawer. That's something I used to regulary but not any more. I mowed about 6 of them down consecutively yesterday without taking a breath.
In all seriousness, get some bloodwork done and check your Thyroid and blood sugar levels.
Had half my thryoid taken out about 20 years ago so my levels are monitored about once a year already. And I've already gone through this whole self-diagnosed hypoglycemia thing a year or two ago where I was feeling faint and absolutely famished if I hadn't eaten for 4 hours. I thought I had it under control but maybe I am doing something differently. I did get a cortisone shot a few weeks ago. That wouldn't make you hungry, would it?
I genuinely think I might be addicted to food

I think I'm done hippling. So yesterday we was our annual 8th grade trip to Disneyland. There was a monumental fuster at the end but I won't go into that. I had to ride on one of the buses not only with 60 amped-up and obnoxious kids but with Tony, the half-Asperger's PE teacher. This guy is notorious for his communication skills or lack thereof. Not only is he a close-talker but he really can't carry on a conversation. Here's a snippet:Keep in mind I've taken out my iPod and have one earbud in.Tony: Hey, you follow baseball at all?Me: Oh, no man. Not really.Tony: Huh? (he says 'huh' about every 3rd sentence)Me: I just really don...Tony: Yeah so I'm watching the MLB network...do you get that?Me: Yeah, my kid watches it. I don't.Tony: So they have rankings the other day. Huh?Me: :mellow:Tony: And they've got New York at #2 but Boston at #3...(I have no idea what he was really saying. I'll just make #### up since that's what I heard)Tony: But there's no way Sacramento has the pitching to be at #4. And they got swept by the Blue Dogs, huh?Me: :mellow:Tony: I mean how do you have Oregon at 6 but the Gladiators are 4 games ahead in the Federal division? Huh?Me: Yeah, that's wild.Tony: So you catch the Columbus game last night? They lost in the fourth set to the Transformers. Huh?I was on a bus with him for almost 7 hours.
He probably follows this thread and was just trying your schtick out on you

I'm looking for a car for the wife. Probably just a basic sedan: Altima, Camry, Mazda 6, Hyundai Optima. We test drove them all today. Am I crazy or is the Hyundai actually the best of the lot? I have never done anything but turn my nose up at Hyundais and certainly never test drove one. Its 2-3K more than the Mazda and 4-6K less than the Camry and Altima. I really want to say under 19K and the Mazda is the only one that does that. On the other hand, I am looking at a used Genesis coupe or Mustang convertible. Something about fast, rear wheel drives that excites me. I am kind of overwhelmed with all the new models and pricing and stuff. I've only bought trucks and SUVs for the last decade.Anyone familiar with any of the aforementioned?
I've driven quite a few Hyundais as rental cars for work. I'm very impressed by the way they drive

Insurance that pays a dividend. To be honest, I don't really understand it... any insurance guys in here?

Pack put it well. You pay much more for "whole" because they package it like you are investing and building wealth for yourself - even if you do not die.Fact is, if you just buy term- it does what insurance is supposed to do - pays money to someone you designate if you die early. If you buy term and invest the price difference between that and whole life- you should come out ahead because of less fees and commissions- and you also can control how that money is invested.

Freedom.

Just back from court and after 7 long months, the divorce is final. The actual proceeding took less than 5 mins, I spent more time making copies before court and in the clerk's office afterwards.

The ex-wife (sweet, I can call her that now) pulled one last stunt just to drive home the point that I made the right decision all along. I picked up the kids for the weekend and was able to hand her the paperwork to sign right in front of her new boyfriend. After awkward introductions and me holding back comments like "My dad has that same shirt" and "You are older than my mom", I went on my way with the kids. Had a great weekend with them and when I brought them back yesterday I asked for the paperwork. She tells me that she didn't have a chance to review and sign them. I about lost it. Lucky for her, the kids were right there. I told her to review them, sign them and I would pick them up first thing in the morning.

Picked them up this morning, barely said a word, and called her after court to tell her it was done. Call lasted 30 seconds.

It really hasn't hit me yet, but I know it will. Expect some shot videos sometime this week.

Just get term from this guy if you need insurance. For investments, I would find someone else to start an IRA. I doubt there's anything "bad" with your 401k, but you're right there may be better options.I am absolutely shocked that an employer like yours would not do matching.

Yeah, that's brutal.I agree with the group, and I'll add you can expect the hard sell from your insurance buddy because it makes him boatloads.

I think the last people you want to ask advice for on this are insurance guys. They're all going to tell you to get the whole life. Just shop around for term, call whoever does your home and car insurance and a few independent agents.

First off, its not a meeting, its a sales pitch. His goal is to get the most possible profit from you. He may have some anecdotal concern for your financial health, but it certainly is not his focus. All you want to come away with is proper insurance for your wife and kids in case you die. And you want it for a fair price. I recommend treating your retirement plan separately. Get a recommendation on what size policy he suggests and get a quote. Then shop the price. As far as retirement investing, I am a big fan of self-directed IRAs, where you save all you can until you have enough to invest it in real estate. Otherwise I like index funds and maybe a mutual fund or two, along with a couple of stocks you have enough knowledge about to support.

Mutual funds probably. Talk to someone and do some homework on which ones are right for you.

Congrats Bogart.

One more thing.... DO NOT let him talk you into a Variable Annuity! If he starts trying to sell you one of those, politely excuse yourself and run away from him.

Have you looked into cashing out then buying term? We did with my wife's policy last year. I plan on doing the same with mine, but I was waiting until I was at least 2 years out from nicotine use and now just haven't gotten around to it.

Me too. It's been almost 20 years now. Oh well. Got some decent money coming to me. I would just blow it on uranium miners.

I'd have to double check but IIRC the cash value isn't worth it yet, not to mention the tax hit. I think I'm on year 8 or so and am just starting to see it grow. Plus, like you, I want to quit chewing before doing anything insurance related.

Soooooo yeah, I made my first appearance at the neighborhood pool yesterday. It was, uh, interesting. There was an unreal amount of super hot women wearing bikinis. These chicks really hit the gym. Included in this is Mary-Beth-Sue-Bob who just looked freaking incredible. Her bikini bottoms (SPONGEBOB SQUARE PANTS!!) were kept on with a loosely tied string that looked like it could come untied at any time. Her husband was there too and he is built like a lumberjack. All of the guys must spend a crazy amount of time in the gym. I have pretty decent sized arms and was one of the smallest guys there. I was also the guy that doesn't shave his chest. This will not change. And these people drink. Oh do these people drink. I was keeping up with them beer for beer and I think I had 14 beers in 3 hours. This was the guys and the chicks drinking this much. Mary-Beth-Sue-Bob made a comment about how her and her husband, Bill, will stay up drinking until 6 AM sometimes. Anyhow, I was eagerly welcomed to "the group" and it all seemed pretty surreal. It actually reminded me a lot of The Devil's Advocate. The women were a little touchy (Marvin, this was the good kind) and flirty. The guys called me bro, asked for business cards so they could buy from me and invited me to their houses for booze. One guy kept saying "I really like you Bob. I really do. You're very cool." Then swinging and sex was brought up. This smoking hot Asian broad said she just bought some anal beads and there was "sex parties" pretty much every week in the subdivision. Mrs. SLB asked for an invite. Then the Asian gal turns to a guy sitting next to her, which coincidentally was a former furniture vendor of mine, and says "didn't your wife buy a strap on?" He turns beet red and quickly denied it. That's when the guy next to me, Nick, who is from the UK, muttered something about "I'll try anything once". Early in the day I told Nick I noticed he had an accent and if he was from Canada. He politely said "No, England actually". :lmao: I kill me. Towards the end of the evening Bill went home and grabbed 6 slabs of ribs off of his BGE, some pasta salad and God knows what else, to feed everybody. That's good eating. So I'm told this happens pretty much every Friday night. I'm not sure how I feel about all of this.

Errrrrrpppp.. Woah. Back up. Rewind... wepoufwe w2operuwef fuwipfupdfwj. Wha?

Freedom.Just back from court and after 7 long months, the divorce is final. I told her to review them, sign them and I would pick them up first thing in the morning.Picked them up this morning, barely said a word, and called her after court to tell her it was done. Call lasted 30 seconds. It really hasn't hit me yet, but I know it will. Expect some shot videos sometime this week.
Woo hoo!! Congrats!

Just get term from this guy if you need insurance. For investments, I would find someone else to start an IRA. I doubt there's anything "bad" with your 401k, but you're right there may be better options.I am absolutely shocked that an employer like yours would not do matching.
they give stock into an account instead based on years of service and salary
