My sister refused to fill her childrens' sandbox with anything but purified sand that cost a LOT more than regular sand. In a shocking turn of events, she and her husband filed for bankruptcy two years ago.
If you have a bermuda lawn, covering dead spots/holes with sand will help the grass grow over the area.ETA: I used all purpose sand or whatever it's called from Lowe's.
