GM's thread about nothing (8 Viewers)

My boy is at 2 years, 4 months and still isn't talking much. He says only a few words and does a lot of pointing. We read to him all the time and try to get him to repeat words and he does ok but realistically only has a recognizable vocabulary of probably 5 words or so. We actually have a speech therapist who comes to see him every other week or so and we've made progress with sign language, which I thought would be the last thing you'd want to do but apparently it helps teach him the power of language and communication and might hurry the process along. It's completely free as long as he's under the age of 3, so YSR you might want to have your relatives look into it.

We aren't really concerned about it because he is clearly very bright (the therapist said she's rarely seen a kid his age pick up signing so quickly) and he doesn't show any other signs of autism (biggest concern for me with the not talking) and I'm sure at some point he'll just start going and the flood gates will open. I think the biggest problem is his sister, who started talking fluently at 1.5 years old and hasn't shut up for 5 minutes the last three years.
My daughter is in the same boat. 19 months, weekly speech therapy.
Ugh, seeing that you guys were so proactive about this makes me feel even worse for the kid. I will try to suggest something along these lines, but I have to walk a pretty fine line when it comes to making recommendations (I'm "not a mother" so I don't know what I am talking about, there is a lot of denial, and just a general lack of common sense).
every kid is so different. some kids are natural introverts. some are more expressive. if the kid seems to get it in other ways, the language will come.

suggesting speech therapy for your nephew could be off-putting. but spending time with him reading books, or buying them books and such would be great. my :2cents:
Lots of misconceptions and anecdotal wisdom about speech delay. E ven kids who seem to "get it" will still benefit from early intervention with speech therapy. No offense, GB, but ignoring it and hoping with good intentions that one day things will just click is a bit misguided.
Same boat 2.5 year old, slightly delayed so we have her in speech therapy. Figure every little bit helps. The speech delay somehow doesn't seem to affect her when she wants to watch more TV than she's allowed or eat ice cream for breakfast

I love Amazon. What did people do before Amazon??
my Dad has small trucking company (6-10 trucks) and pays for everything (mostly fuel)using his Discover card. This has accumulated in nearly 10k in Amazon dollars. My Mom recently discovered Amazon and is ecstatic about the rewards money. Hope I get that table saw or full body bear suit i had on my wishlist.

Told me to stay at the table, walked up to the counter, and told the lady that she wanted a "hangurber."
lol

I am convinced that I need to buy a gun after reading the liberal rhetoric in this thread. People can believe anything they want but the main stream media propaganda is just sickening. The media in this country needs to go. It is a curse on a free socity. You want to see another civil war? Start taking away the 2nd amendment. The founders were SPOT on when they instructed Americans that the right to bear arms shall NOT be infringed upon. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone with a lick of sense would give this government any trust to protect your rights. You want to go live in a society without a 2nd amendment, you have plenty of choices. You think the events of last Friday are tragic? What about the millions of children that have been aborted? What about the filthy process of late term abortions? Where is the outrage for that blood shedding? I am sick to my stomach as to what has happened to these children. I am in a mode of depression over the death of these innocent children that lost their lives this past Friday. The media blames the guns BUT what about the state of the individual pulling the trigger? How does an individual kill children without mercy? What is the root cause of such EVIL? People go after the guns but what about the filth on TV? The violence in movies and video games? The manner in which people treat each other? The NFL? The MMA? The drones that kill innocent children? The war machines that destroy women and children in the name of stopping terror? We have become a society in LOVE with violence. You give a child a life influenced by violence from the filthy media and then beat people up for 8 plus years about how bleak and depressing our economy is- what do people think is going to happen to these kids? You are willing to toss away your right to defend yourself and trust government because the media is teaching our society about being filthy, violent, porn loving and unmoralistic? People want to talk about the source of the issue- the root cause- let's start with the filthy media and a power grabbing lying government.
bone-chilling.What are the chances there may be some forensic evidence garnered from that post in the future?

Tenn -1.5 tonight? the Jets are horrible, but the Titans are less horrible right?
What Im feeling and the Over (41.5)
Why the over? I think both offenses are pretty bad......
Both offense have been stagnant but both defenses are vulnerable. I feel like we could see some turnovers in this one that lead to easy points. I suspect with Locker in that the Titans will take some shots down field. Only fear is that this turns into a turnover/ground & pound game. Line on SB just came down from Titans -1.5 / 41.5 to even/41
Only 5 Jets games have gone over 42 pts this yearTitans have only scored 24+ points 4 times this year, so basically you're banking on the Jets scoring 3 TDs in the game. Not sure I like that

Yea, I took a look at the stats. Im going to go Jets -1 and take the Over 41. Jets 23Titans 20

I can't figure this game out.

Objectively, I would just take the Jets as I think they are a more skilled team.

But I've over-estimated their ability to win too frequently this year, so I do not have an accurate read on them this year. .

I've been a fan of the Houston Oilers Ten Titans for decades, so I am going to just bet as them Mon night home dog. And since betting the over is more fun than the under, so I'll parlay that with Ten for enough to make me have an interest in watching the game... maybe 80 bucks to win 208.

pushing a speech therapist on an 18 month old is a bit over the top  our youngest didn't really say anything til almost 2. doctor kept reminding us that it was no big deal. she's naturally a little more introverted than her attention whoring sister so we expected things to develop more slowly. 2 years + 1 month now and she can curse in 2 languages. wife's friends oldest son didn't say a word til 3. no speech therapy. he's 6 now and a freaking genius. painting all kids with a broad brush is a mistake.

my point is people freak out about their kids being "behind" when they are perfectly normal. it's hard enough being a parent without having to constantly worry about your kid in comparison to what someone elses kid is doing. all of them aren't built the same.

Warning Signs of a Possible Problem

If you're concerned about your child's speech and language development, there are some things to watch for.

An infant who isn't responding to sound or who isn't vocalizing is of particular concern. Between 12 and 24 months, reasons for concern include a child who:

isn't using gestures, such as pointing or waving bye-bye by 12 months

prefers gestures over vocalizations to communicate by 18 months

has trouble imitating sounds by 18 months

has difficulty understanding simple verbal requests

Seek an evaluation if a child over 2 years old:

can only imitate speech or actions and doesn't produce words or phrases spontaneously

says only certain sounds or words repeatedly and can't use oral language to communicate more than his or her immediate needs

can't follow simple directions

has an unusual tone of voice (such as raspy or nasal sounding)

is more difficult to understand than expected for his or her age. Parents and regular caregivers should understand about half of a child's speech at 2 years and about three quarters at 3 years. By 4 years old, a child should be mostly understood, even by people who don't know the child.

What Speech-Language Pathologists Do

If you or your doctor suspect that your child has a problem, early evaluation by a speech-language pathologist is crucial. Of course, if there turns out to be no problem after all, an evaluation can ease your fears.

Although you can seek out a speech-language pathologist on your own, your primary care doctor can refer you to one.

In conducting an evaluation, a speech-language pathologist will look at a child's speech and language skills within the context of total development. Besides observing your child, the speech-language pathologist will conduct standardized tests and scales, and look for milestones in speech and language development.

The speech-language pathologist will also assess:

what your child understands (called receptive language)

what your child can say (called expressive language)

if your child is attempting to communicate in other ways, such as pointing, head shaking, gesturing, etc.

sound development and clarity of speech.

your child's oral-motor status (how a child's mouth, tongue, palate, etc., work together for speech as well as eating and swallowing)

If the speech-language pathologist finds that your child needs speech therapy, your involvement will be very important. You can observe therapy sessions and learn to participate in the process. The speech therapist will show you how you can work with your child at home to improve speech and language skills.

Evaluation by a speech-language pathologist may find that your expectations are simply too high. Educational materials that outline developmental stages and milestones may help you look at your child more realistically.

My 3 month old is already reciting Shakespeare. And by reciting Shakespeare I mean making spit bubbles and giggling.

Oh and my SS should get his gift on Thursday :coffee:

My SS gift will be sent out tomorrow, the last bit came in the mail and I'm putting the finishing touches on things tonight

At what age can I expect the words to start? I suppose I can look this up elsewhere but I get exposure to the outside world pretty much completely from this place.
I was like you and couldn't wait for him to start talking. Every kid is different, though. If he's already babbling, is expect he'll focus on some words soon. We got him saying "light" when he'd see this little spinning LED thing at about 10 months. He just turned 16 months and will repeat nearly anything.
I've mentioned before that I'm concerned about my nephew. He's almost 2.5 and is speaking very little. He knows "No", of course, and maybe a couple of other words such as "mama", "nana", etc. I can tell that he's a really bright kid - I just don't think he's getting what he should be in terms of developmental health (i.e. they don't read to him, they answer for him, there aren't any real learning tools that I've seen around the house).I want to get him some kind of LeapFrog-type toys for Christmas (versus the motorized Jeep that my in-laws are getting him) unless anyone else has something better to recommend.
We are supposed to have learning toys?! His favorite toys at this point are a $1 broom, his guitar (yes!) and an empty water jug with a face drawn on it. unsure
